L-Ag55Sn.

Here is what I just sent to a friend and also a link. Hi Jim, This young fellow is fascinating to me. He is a modern German machinist who speaks perfect English and is wonderfully skilled with traditional and modern machine shop tools. He is great at explaining what he is doing, makes excellent videos and is into Model A Fords!

KING PIN LOCKING BOLT/NUT Part # A-3122/24 | Model Year 28-31 Special bolt, nut, and lock washer that locks the spindle bolt in place in the axle. Nut goes on back side of axle and provides the stopping point for the spindle when the wheels are turned.

I just had a thought, did they find there was a problem with your machine running at top speed, say an apprentice problem or a bearing running hot if used for too long a period, and used longer pins as a speed limiter?
@AstraWerke
@AstraWerke 9 күн бұрын
A far easier way to limit the speed would be to adjust the travel stop on the motor. I doubt this machine has seen much maintenance in its life - so I can't imagine anyone bothered to take the whole vario drive apart.

Wow - this may be the first job that's got (very nicely...) to plan, without any major hang ups. Super nice work on the new part - I don't know if you saw Quinn Dunki making the cyclinders, but she also had a faceted look, which I liked. kzbin.info/www/bejne/omq5nqdpdsqZjrs (8:56) And then she smoothed and polished it away! I think you decision is the right one (and is readily reversed in future anyway). It will be a shock not seeing the drill press table bend in use, like the old times though (especially in the time lapses)
@AstraWerke
@AstraWerke 9 күн бұрын
The difference to my crappy table drill really is undescribeable. One might think the larger machine would be harder to use with small drills, but even 1.5mm drill bits are easier to use on this behemoth than the small chinese one. It's just so well built and play-free that you feel everything in the control handles which makes drilling holes an absolute pleasure.

@@brandtmagolon454 They do their job. I don't have a comparison to stock mounts as I bought the car with floaters already installed, but you can fine-tune them very well with the tightening screws, so they must be doing something. At least I can't confirm the myth about them causing frame sag.

Thats a huge amout of metal it caught! Probably normal for a break in after a rebuild. But imagine if some portion of that metal got funneled down to the main bearigns or got anywhere else. Engine longevity is closely negatively linked to circulating metal particles in the oil, especially iron particles. So a filter is really good for longevity.

Thanks Astra-Werke for the video, really neat dies you made! I just restored an All American Die Filing Machine, it reminds me of my shaper and is perfect for the small shop for making the types of dies you made. I use it in clock making too. To make the stack I would clamp a piece of pipe in a vice and press it over with a long piece of wood and keep turning as I bent it, if that makes sense!

It was a long, long time ago that I was making things out of tin. But we would bend the tin back and forth over a pipe and pulling it towards you at the same time with your hand to break the grain (the bend was not very much) in the tin before we bent it around a pipe and if you did it well there would not be any wrinkles in it.

For some strange reason, this adventure reminded me of mine shafts. They must have had jigs for ladder making. There are literally thousands if not 10s of thousands of rough-hewn ladders in an average mine. They are all exactly the same and perfectly symmetrical. The long ones are made from combining the standard length.
@michaelcherry8952
@michaelcherry8952 26 күн бұрын
The versatility that having machining skills gives you for project work never ceases to amaze me. If you need something specialized (such as the dies for the ladder pieces), you can simply design and fabricate them. And, yes, I understand that "simply" is a relative term but compared to what someone with no skills can do, it's another level. As frustrating as this kind of work can be (and you are honest enough to show that to us) the level of satisfaction achieved by moving from an idea to reality must be incredible. It doesn't matter to me if you are working on the Model A, one of your steam engine models or repairing some random piece of gear I'm always interested in what you are up to. 18:33 "Be-Spoke"!🙄😆 As for the chimney, perhaps you could get a smoother curve with something like an English Wheel? Just a thought.

Great video! As to the chimney, ...... hmmmmm. Turning a conical form to roll sheet metal onto would be no real guarantee of a smooth finish, although it might be smoother than it is now. You could certainly turn a chimney on the lathe. It would look nice, but be heavy and wasteful to produce. Perhaps embossing a brick pattern on the sheet metal would hide a multitude of sins?
