The fact females prefer mating with bulls that dont protect them feels like something that could be exploited. Could a female that prefers slightly smaller males but benefits her calves with more protection be an alternarive strategy?

I like that while being big would usually just paint a big target in an ocean filled with megalodons and mosasaurs, the ability of sperm whales do dive deep greatly helps them. Its like a cheat code in a rpg "I attack" "I avoid it by burrowing underground!"

Interesting series on the rare carnivorans of Kaimere. Some more things to say: 1. Fact: the last agriotherium became extinct in Africa 2.5 MYA. Though since during its time, Africa was warmer than it was today which means that agriotherium died of the climate cooling. The largest feral cat in Australia was 6 ft long and 18 kg. 2. Hemicyoninae and ursavus could've coincided with some of the Cenozoic harvests (even perhaps the Oligocene harvest and Warring Clades Period in the case of cephalogale and ursavus respectively). 3. How do common reef dragons interact with moduru? 4. Do uurugetar ambush prey from the water like polar bears?
@IanPendleton-gh6ox3 күн бұрын
There was apparently a species of Agriotherium (Agriotherium sivalensis) that has fossils known from the Pinjor Formation of India, which dates to between 2.28 and 1.6 million years ago. I only know of that from the Pinjor Formation's article on Wikipedia though, so take that with a grain of salt.

I could see this bear being a nest raider of the crocodiles and giant monitors. With the reptiles having a higher reproductive rate, but little to limited parental care. Also on land a bear of such large size could pose a treat to basking giant reptile. As an aside: There is some evidence that the largest Short-Faced Bear, the South American Giant Short Faced Bear hunted giant ground sloths. An aggressive confrontation between prime adult giant bears and sloths, must have been something not matched today.
@TalesofKaimere4 күн бұрын
Indeed. Nest raiding and dominating in some confrontation context has likely contributed to the species persisting at all. It's a fight that would be really impressive to see!
