I can't even tell you for how long I've wanted a hyena episode. It's obvious how much you like these animals with the way you give them the respect and justice they deserve, portraying them as successful and versatile animals in your settings. It's really needed in the media landscape which treats them as the bad guys and annoying thieves and scavengers. They are so much more interesting and complex.
@TalesofKaimere3 ай бұрын
Absolutely agree. Wanted to be sure I included the urukideu brown hyena since they are still often (not always) dedicated scavengers, but the clade as a whole is not restricted to this role. They do suffer from a monolith reputation when even in the few surviving species, hyenas of Earth today fill a surprisingly diverse roster of niches.
@doktorhyena3 ай бұрын
Definitely glad you mentioned the strict matriarchy being false in spotted hyenas and applied it to these guys too. Something else you may find interesting is that when brothers or cousins migrate to the same clan together, they often will support each other to the point where they have been seen harassing high-ranking natal hyenas, including females, of the clan they join. This was shown in a study that came out in December of 2022.

@@shingtiong9425 There are almost no immigrant females, because if a female were to disperse to another clan she would get the lowest rank. I'm impressed by the hyenas of Kaimere. Many people think hyenas are gross scavengers, but in fact they are socially complex hunters. These creatures practice nepotism, which means a baby hyena inherits the rank of their mother. Matter of fact, statistically speaking, it is actually more common for lions to steal from hyenas rather than the other way around, though it must be said that they are direct competitors who will deliberately kill each other's young to increase their chances. You also mentioned previously that because the hyenas of the mountains are hard to domesticate, the Telmede bred dogs called Hyena Mastiffs to compensate, though the nobility still keep true hyenas. I also want to point out that your Cave Panther, briefly seen among Arvelith steppe predators, looks more like a jaguar than a leopard, so what kind of cat is it? Is it a Panthera at all? Cheers to you, Keenan, thank you for another enlightening episode!
@diegoquezada31933 ай бұрын
It should be mentioned though, the hyena species you are talking about is the Spotted Hyena specifically, which is one of the 4 currently alive hyena species, the brown and striped hyenas are primarily scavengers, while the 4th species, the aardwolf is an insectivore.

Absolutely! I'm quite proud of the veraset. Wish I'd had time to give it a fresh illustration since the old art isn't up to my current quality, but the design wouldn't be changed and it is nice to have in a running pose for this particular animal especially. Might not be ideal as a scientific illustration (which should usually be in a more neutral pose to better show anatomy) but sprinting is so important to them that it feels fitting

And overall a very good episode about Hyenas as a whole giving a lot of recognition to the creatures they are in real real. 2) Now that the species inhabiting the immediate Known World and close areas beyond have been covered, I now very excited to see what the future will show for the hyenas species living far north Ni'Khar and on Kairul ! 3) The Aardwolf is still the exact same species (Proteles cristatus) than the one we have on Earth, right ? And which came from the Pleistocene North Africa Harvest around 255-248 kya ago, making itt he youngest and most recent arrival of the hyenas on Kaimere. Right ? 4) Is the fact that the Common Hyena came from Kairul after its ancestor pass a period of time on it after migrating there from the Known World after introduction, then came back to the Known World again, still hold up as piece of lore ? And with the Na'haset entelodont, also coming from Kairul by the same migration into the Known World, having a greyish sin with dark stripes on its body mimicking the pattern of the Common Hyena due to their relationship also still canon too ?

@TalesofKaimere3 ай бұрын
I'd start by looking at animals like humans, camels, and wolves known for their endurance. Long legs aren't actually that necessary for speed (hippos and brown bears are a famous example) but do help a lot with stride efficiency. Camels are fast, but they really shine in how few calories they burn while walking. Humans too. You probably want something with long legs and a light body. Bulk is often wasted on something specialized for endurance. All that said: these are trends. Wolverines are also really good with endurance iirc, and they aren't built as I just described.

I do kinda wish that the mountain hyena could be domesticated despite there being a very good reason that they aren't. It would be interesting to have a counterpart to dogs that comes from a different branch of the carnivoran tree. I wonder if a similar process of domestication is possible for the mountain hyena. If certain wild individuals are friendlier towards people they would, in theory, be rewarded with food while problematic individuals are not and may be outright killed. Over time this could lead to a friendlier population popping up around certain areas that people live in and be the first steps towards true domestication. I find that theorized process incredibly interesting and I think it would be super cool to see at a more intermediate stage.

So, if the prairie hyenas have a preference for horses (and presumably antelopes, too), what are the prey preferences of the forest and mountain hyenas? As for the cave hyena, is it common for them to target the wooly beraphaunt of the steppes? Being this the equivalent of wooly rhinos of Earth, which was a common prey for Earth's cave hyenas. Also, what kind of horses live on the Arvelith steppes?
@TalesofKaimere3 ай бұрын
Mountain hyenas prefer takin and wild horses. Forest it really depends since forest in Kaimere has so much variety. They are most common in Titan gardens and tend to favor large deer in those environments

Do golden and brown-morph stripe hyenas exist on earth?
@TalesofKaimere3 ай бұрын
No, but keep in mind these are not particularly close to striped hyenas, just resemble them because that's likely the ancestral coloration of hyenas. Snow leopards, leopards and jaguars aren't sister taxa but all have something similar to the ancestral Panthera coloration and pattern. Striped hyenas have a range of grey, brown, and gold undertones but it's not nearly as pronounced as these guys. Mostly they are blond with very dark brown stripes
@Discussr3 ай бұрын
I apologise if i misunderstand but is the common hyaena more closely related to striped hyaenas or are they derived from the ancestors of spotted hyaenas?
@Andrey.Ivanov3 ай бұрын
It's unclear exactly, but if it came from that Miocene harvest than its likely derived from something close to the common ancestor of striped, brown and spotted hyenas. So not particularly close to any specific one of them, but closer to them than to the aardwolf.

From what I was able to find, the common ancestor of striped, brown, and spotted hyenas is estimated to be around 10 million years ago. As that's around when these guys were harvested, they are equally related to all three. As brown and striped hyenas seem closer, imagine it this way: brown and striped are siblings, spotted and common hyenas are cousins from the same side but each with different parents.

Question: if the term "alpha" in zoology had its definition updated shouldn't the same apply to "Omega"? My personal take on an Omega is an individual with equal importance in contribution to the group as the Alpha albeit with less authority. For example, a bear that has been adopted by a wolf pack would be considered that packs Onega. What definition would you give the Omega, Keenan?

@@rylanbrewer3320 There is indeed overlap in prey and territory between them, mountain leopard, and thylacoleo. Doesn't invalidate the trends I mentioned above. @@rylanbrewer3320 Don't assume all members of a clade have the same restrictions as their most famous derived members. A general trend of a clade, like being robust, is not always a law that all abide. We should not restrict assumptions of tyrannosauroids on T. rex, for example. A lot of the early borophagines harvested in the Oligocene were not the robust extreme bone crushers like Epicyon. These smaller more basal borophagines were ancestral to most Kaimeran borophagines.
