American here👋. We do not have one standard yarn weight sold to beginners. I’m not sure what you are talking about.
@OliphantKat27 күн бұрын
Hi! It’s not an official category or anything, just something I came up with from observation. Basically I’ve noticed that the mostly commonly used yarn in the States is worsted, and the most commonly used one in Australia is DK (we call it 8 ply). If it’s different in your experience that’s fine! Also I started knitting in the States in 2016 and we moved away in 2019, it may have changed since then (I know it’s changing over here, bulkier weights are becoming more common).

I hope you enjoy and get as much from the Ravelry stash features as I have over the years. It's exciting that you're just starting to delve into them. A few years ago when the site became less accessible I designed up my own database for recording my stash, projects, brands and bases in Airtable and am glacially slowly adding my projects from Rav to my personal website. Designing and coding up the interlinking databases was an interesting challenge. Especially figuring out how I wanted to handle mystery and handspun yarns.
@OliphantKatАй бұрын
Yes I started by trying to build out a spreadsheet for myself and realised quickly that I was hitting the edge of my spreadsheet knowledge, when I asked my husband if he know how to do what I wanted he was like "I'd just build a database" and at that point I figured I may as well just use Ravelry's database :p
@viktoriaschmied6627Ай бұрын
I'll be honest: I almost NEVER use the recommended yarn the designers list as the example yarns as they tend to be hard to access and therefore more expensive or just generally out of my budget as a student. So please feel free to use whatever you wish to create the pattern! I'm sure many people don't care to match the exact yarn but just to knit the designs and support their favourite designers
@OliphantKatАй бұрын
Oh thank you, that's very kind of you to say :) I never use the intended yarn either :p Unfortunately one of the things I've learned as a designer is that there are a lot of people who buy a pattern because they like the combo of pattern, yarn (and even colour) that's pictured in the sample pics, so you still have to cater to people who want the opportunity to do that. It's ok though, I usually figure it out fine and it's a good opportunity to highlight yarns from smaller companies/indie dyers that people may not have heard of.

How do you work out length of yarn on a part skein that has no label?
@OliphantKat3 ай бұрын
So I think for about 95% of my yarn even if I didn't have the label, I could figure out what the yarn was - if you can dig through old Ravelry projects or Instagram posts and find out what the yarn is that's the best option. If you really can't figure out what it is, working out the length is dependent on how much you *do* know about the yarn. Basically, you need to know the weight and the composition. If you know both those things, go look up a yarn with the same properties and use the yardage from there. If you don't know the weight, use Wraps Per Inch to figure it out. If you don't know the composition, that's a bit trickier - I think most people have certain fibre types that they use a lot so you can just sort've guess by feel. Eg the vast majority of my yarn is wool, cotton, or a wool/nylon blend (that's all sock yarn) and I can definitely tell the difference between the three. Even if your yarn's a blend, if you get the main component right (ie what the yarn is mostly made out of) then if you find a similar yarn you'll at least be in the right ball park. Hope that helps! Good luck with your yarn sleuthing.
@viktoriaschmied6627Ай бұрын
If you have a kitchen scale you could always just measure out a gram and then check the meterage and just multiply that by the whole partial skeins weight.
@AlegryaАй бұрын
Another thing you can do is purchase a fishing line meter and run the yarn through it while you're skeining or balling. I'm a spinner and I use the meter to both measure out my spun singles and plied yarn and also to confirm the meterage of commercial yarns. I store both figures in my Airtable stash.

It’s always interesting to see how people organise their stash. I did mine recently and bundled up yarn with patterns in project bags ready to go. This has been great motivation for me as I’m eager to start the next project. I put the basic details in my ravelry projects page with the project hibernating so I can easily choose what to do next. I have a lot of quantities of yarn that aren’t enough to do much with though so I’m always on the lookout for ideas.
@OliphantKat3 ай бұрын
Ooh yeah I've heard other people describe the method you did, it sounds like a good idea! I'm just too fickle to actually stick to the plan - I've found if I earmark yarns for patterns, by the time I get around to knitting them I don't feel like making that pattern anymore. Yeah the little scraps are what'll get you. If you have lots of 4 ply or 8 ply, the blanket that I kept alluding to in the green basket is a Stella Quilt blanket, it's been a lot of fun to knit!

Thanks Ally, I've been loving all your updates recently too, I'm glad you have a bit more time for knitting these days! Based on some of the comments I've gotten I think it may actually be best to check both the airline and the border control websites - it seems that some airlines can be weirdly picky about bringing needles on. I've never had issues with it though!
@SusanJMT5 ай бұрын
I had no problem knitting on a plane anywhere in the U.S. nor in China UNTIL there was a high-level international meeting scheduled in Beijing and security was amped up. Suddenly knitting needles became a security risk and were conviscated.

Oh that's such a shame! Did you have them confiscated in the US or China?

welcome back! I have heard of people using a dental floss container as a yarn cutter as well. I think the airline staff would have at least one pair of scissors on the plane eg in a first aid kit, so I think you could potentially ask the airline staff to cut your yarn for you. another thing I have heard but not personally experienced is that wooden or bamboo needles are less suspicious than metal ones (although that wouldn't work for me personally as I am a metal needles gal).
@OliphantKat5 ай бұрын
Yes, I've heard the dental floss thing too! Also you can use the floss as a stitch holder if you don't have any other options, so it's handy that way too. I heard the metal needle tip when I first started flying (it's actually why I bought my first set of wooden needles), but I've flown with metal needles since and it's been fine.
