I'm finding that free range till butcher makes tough meat. I did some in the coop and they turned out good. Next is going to be a chicken tractor. My thoughts are to limit their exercise. I'm also trying to breed CC with the Bresse. I just got a CC roo in with Bresse hens. I want to take those chicks and breed them together and I may have something. Project in the works!

Can I use this method to store cheese, get some out as I need it, and then, put the rest back away?

Probably, but I have not tried it. I think if I was going to do that, I would be sure to cut or roll the soft cheese into smaller sections so I could just take out as many portions as needed without having to put any back.

Hi, Jimmy! Are you asking which breeders my Bresse stock came from? If so, I started with some from a local breeder in Montana who does not ship, Bresse Farms, which has a website you can order chicks or hatching eggs from, and an eBay seller who had great quality stock but is no longer in business. At the moment, hatching eggs typically cost $40-$60 per dozen, while straight run Bresse chicks go for somewhere around $10 each plus shipping.

So these are planted, grow, die back THEN harvested? You can’t eat them as a fresh bean?
@kaitsgardenchannel1363
@kaitsgardenchannel1363 2 ай бұрын
Yes, dry beans are harvested once the plants have partially or completely died back at the end of the season. They can also be shelled and eaten as fresh beans, like a lima bean. Although they are completely edible as a whole "green bean", these varieties have been bred with a focus on the seeds. That means that the pods will be more stringy and not as tasty as your typical green bean.

Are the Calypso beans that have more brown color to them still good? Do they sometimes just discolored or do those not last as long? They're so pretty and I want to try to grow them this year! I loved watching you and your kids shelling, such a sweet moment.

Usually it's the beans that were not quite mature that are more brownish colored. The Black Valentine beans do the same thing. I don't pick them out, but if they float when I go to wash the beans I will pour them out with the wash water.

Nature has a way of digesting rocks and sand to create soil and to feed plants and you should follow nature's path. Forget about the rocks leave them where they are cover them with all the compost and organic material you can find with mycorrhizal spores, then plant whatever you want and enjoy

@kaitsgardenchannel1363
@kaitsgardenchannel1363 5 ай бұрын
While there are definitely more factors than just economics, for us our dairy cow and dairy goats are the most valuable animals on our homestead. Compared to buying a similar product, we save the most money on producing our own dairy products compared to raising animals for eggs or meat.

USDA zones are based on the average coldest temperature each winter. It really affects perennials more than annual vegetables. However, it still makes a good reference point since areas that get colder generally have shorter frost free seasons than the warmer areas. If you have 5 months between frosts you will have a lot more options on what to grow than the short season veggie varieties shared here!

Dr doom poultry lice and mite killer ,that is what I use a 15 second spray in the coop as the birds roost at night every 10 days and a bit of diatomaceous earth in the floor bedding and I haven't had a problem for five years now . Lost a lot of birds until I came up with this remedy. Remember it's the coop that contaminated the birds ,not the birds contaminated the coop . ❤

Thank you my little7 months old hen decided to go broody in October not sure if I should help her by moving her to a safe location but afraid she will abandon them she is behind our garage under an Eve we did put a tarp over head to keep the rain off her. Should I let her take care of the chicks when they hatch or let her take care of them completely?
@kaitsgardenchannel1363
@kaitsgardenchannel1363 9 ай бұрын
She may abandon the eggs if you disturb her, so if possible it is better to leave her where she is at. If she isn't in a safe place you'll be taking a risk either way, so it's really a judgement call. Most broody hens do a good job of taking care of their chicks on their own, but if you notice she is having problems you can always intervene and raise the chicks yourself. Good luck! New chicks are a lot of fun!

That was very good. One comment on goats -- a decent dairy goat ought to milk for ten months, just like the cow, and in fact (more in some breeds than others) it may be possible to 'milk through' two or more years without rebreeding, if you just keep on milking her. Also, it is possible to get goats that will average quite a bit more than two quarts of milk per day. You don't necessarily want the super-high producers (the ones whose mother and grandmother are on the top ten list for the breed), because they are producing so much that they require special care to maintain their health. But there is a good inbetween.

I often cook by placing the Dutch Oven or Cast Iron frying pan inside the wood stove, directly on the fire or coals. You often get a LOT of heat that way, so it's easy to burn food if you aren't paying attention. To learn this technique I'd recommend frying potatoes in a cast iron frying pan with a lid on it. Take it out using a hot pad every five minutes or so to observe how much heat the food is getting and to turn the food. The food will continue to cook for several minutes, using the heat in the cast iron frying pan. If more cooking is needed, put it back in the wood stove for some additional minutes. This is a good way to get some experience in this method of cooking in your wood stove. It's also good for baking and heating water, too. It gives you a lot more heat than cooking on top of the wood stove.
