Cats essentially. That doesn’t mean we don’t have a very diverse household including all the spiders, wasps and whatever else flies around the yurt :).

PLEASE PUT IN A DEEP FIRE BREAK you can see the fires in central Portugal every single year if you can screw 1/4 inch plywood on the existing floor inside the Yurt look for the cross bracings to screw into that should give you 3 more years it wont be easy but it will be cheap good luck.

I’m 80 I have always loved the yert (spelling). I first became aware of this nomadic living unit in late 50’s…then I realized living in Canada there were many nations that are living in similar units…I myself raised in the bush traveled a nomadic life style for my early years since my father had a contract with govt to explore for oil and gas sites….

I don’t want to say this without sounding like a Debbie Downer. It is said from concern. Given the recent fires it has come to my attention that fires runs up hill. Is it safe to build on top of a hill? Also what about an escape route for the family and animals in the case of a fire? Maybe you have already taken this into account? I wish you the best.❤❤❤

Not any less safe than being half way up a hill. We're closer now to the main road than we were before, and have two exit routes. We're also relatively safe from fires as most of the plots around are well kept olives fields with just small strips of pinetrees inbetween. So while it might look like we live in the middle of the forest on camera, we don't. We take fire safety really serious because we arrived in PT in 2018, not too long after the big fires of 2017. We stayed with a few people that lost everything, so are very aware of what could happen.

@@ourportuguesehomestead I’m delighted to hear that Leah. You are right, it does look like you are living in the middle of the forest on camera. It is a relief to know you are fire aware and have prepared for an emergency exit. Now that I know you are all safe for the future can I saw what a beautiful view you have and wish you good luck in your new location. ❤️

This is my first time on your channel. Lots of hard work and the view is great. Wondering what you will use to close the space between the concrete blocks and the floor to keep the pests out. I know you are busy but if you have a chance, I'd love to hear from you. A yurt is on my dream list.

Like the improvement , the new place and stuff you have learned. But please, please, please, accept one other thing, good equipment is everything! Buy a decent Makita drill like the DTD 152 or DDF 484, it will save you tons of time and frustration. And the investment isn’t even that big if you buy it at for example marktplaats.

@@ourportuguesehomestead I agree, B&D is better quality then it used to be. But working speed and reliability, Makita 18v outclasses everything! Worth every penny.

Hello Leah, I love watching your channel. And I can relate when you are working with the bee frames to attach the beeswax laminate because my husband is a beekeeper and I used to that work to help him, but he always require me to use gloves for safety. And I also work with him in the beefarm from time to time. I love the noise of the bees, it's soo soothing for me. ❤❤

Hi there, I like your pragmatic/pratical sense to use the necessary tools to get the job done. Why kill yourself when a digger will do the job in a day. I really enjoy the fact that you don't get bogged down in unattainable ideas just for the sake of saying that you're committed to something. A lot of common sense trumps false idealism. It's hard enough to live off grid and there is no reason to make it any harder. I enjoy your sense of self preservation. Muito obrigado, mesmo.
