Unusually perhaps, the first version of this song that I ever heard was by Siouxsie and the Banshees. Their version sounds very ominous. This one is more folksy.

It seems a bit unfortunate that this song is so much associated with "Absolutely Fabulous" given the shallow and frivolous nature of those characters. I hadn't realized that this song is rather dark--it seems to be saying something important. Cheers.

I recently heard an old radio interview in which he told how he wrote this song in minutes! He was driving to pick up his girlfriend, he had to stop at a pay phone, have his mother take the phone into his room, instructed her how to operate real to real tape recorder (press play and record together) and he sang it down the phone line. When he finished he phoned his girlfriend to tell her what had happened asked her if it was ok to cancel their date. I hint she forgave him. I think he received a lifetime ferry pass for this song! RIP Gerry
