Hello Matt, how much is the cost of the flat ride? What is the size by the way. It sounds amazing!!!

It's 20 inches. Let's continue the conversation you started with me on instagram. Cheers, Matt

That flat ride sounds incredible! I'm a little hesitant to play thin B15 cymbals, because of Paiste's cymbals that tend to bend. Is it different in this case when it's handmade? Thanks!

It's 1985g. Not exactly thin.

@MattNolanCustomАй бұрын
the prices at the show are $625 for the hats and $600 for the 19"

@@MattNolanCustom Are the prices the same or higher outside of the show in case I need to go for a commission?
@MattNolanCustomАй бұрын
Those prices will hold for a while, until the price of bronze goes up, at least.

I think Jerry Goldsmith used this instrument for Planet of the Apes. Actually he used a lot of odd "instruments" for that soundtrack including pots and pans, I believe. The Lujon can be heard in the beginning of the Planet of the Apes cue called The Search Continues.

Thanks a lot! I will read the pdf of Moeller. According with Guido Facchin (Percussions, 2014, pages 1200) it seems that Paiste can offer gong electronically tuned (442 hz) starting from C2; Orff's Antigone requires G1. (UFIP, ex Tronci: starting from one octave above). Very impressive: look at the score of Tosca III: all the dynamics of all the bells, then...look the curches in Rome from google maps: impressive! Puccini was aware of the distances of the curches near San Pietro: f for the nearest, then mf, p , ppp: all is perfect right! He was imaging the audience in front of San Pietro. This should be recreated in theatre: non only bells in backstage! instead: spheric acustic! that mens that dynamics in Tosca III ppp, pp , p , mf are not musical inspiration but personal knowlodge of the curches in Rome and their distance from the imagined audience location. the score dynamics of the bells **fully agree** with google maps! no words. [sorry my old pc does not allow me to reply, so I started a new post; unfortunately for me youtube is using html5 ].

Is it possible to tune the fundamental and the partials? is there any way in which I can only hear the fundamental? I hope you can help me!
@MattNolanCustom2 ай бұрын
there are ways, albeit limited, to adjust the tuning of the partials. A tubular bell gets its characteristic sound from the relationship between the audible partials. Actually the fundamental of a tubular bell is not the note you hear. It doesn't even produce the note you hear - it is an illusion. To make something that only projects the fundamental is impossible, but you could make a large bass vibraphone type thing and use a resonator to strongly emphasise the fundamental

Obviously not expecting you to divulge your processes to some random schmuck on the Internet, even as much as I've wanted to build a test of orchestra bells to hang in my entry-way to set up solenoid-driven hammers connected to a midi controller to have custom doorbell patterns to play. Cool to see this. I'll have to keep my eyes open for a surplussed set of Musser orchestra bells for my pet project.

A true labour of love (and probably also blood, sweat and tears)....amazing. I'm so fascinated to know whether you have an idea of the tone you're going to get before the finished product? Or is it all in the hands of the gong gods? Also how do you know where to beat the metal? Wow, anyway it's amazing to see.

@@MattNolanCustom The composer suggested using a Piano as a substitute
@MattNolanCustom4 ай бұрын
@@RockStarOscarStern634 that's quite a common substitute suggestion by composers for deep bells. Berlioz did the same for Symphonie Fantastique.
@RockStarOscarStern6344 ай бұрын
@@MattNolanCustom It just hit me why Berloiz wrote the Bell part of Symphonie Fatastique in the Grand Staff & in Triple Octaves because Berloiz suggested using a Piano as a Substitute for the super low pitched bells. So Piano isn't an inferior Substituted for the Bells, it's a Suggested substitute.
@MattNolanCustom4 ай бұрын
@@RockStarOscarStern634 That's right. Though the sound in his head that he wanted was the bells from Saint Sulpice in Paris. They are a bit heavy (and too loud!) for most orchestra stages / backstages though!
In gamelan the instruments are often paired. In a pair each instrument is detuned, one up and one down, so that when they play together they produce the most wonderful detuned metalophone sound. The beatings of that detuned sound is the life of the sound, that is what they are after.

You're right. Alas, we only got the commission to make a single Gameleste and not a complementary pair.

I thought the sound only came from the rings, from the 3 metal branches too! Has it always been this way?
@MattNolanCustom7 ай бұрын
There are sistra in antiquity with fixed rods and with sliding rods. It makes a big difference to the sound because fixed rods dampen the sound of the hoop/frame while sliding rods allow the hoop to ring and the rods themselves make some noise. There were sistra without jingle discs / rings too, just sliding rods. These instruments are thousands of years old. There are many variations. I tried to capture most of the possibilities in this one instrument.
