Stop and let them sniff or observe whatever caused them to stop? A study showed that 30 minutes of sniffing and exploring had the same fatigue effect as an hour of walking. Your dog gets more value out of the mental stimulation of exploring than of the physical exercise of the walking. So, it depends on if the walk is for you or the dog. Obviously, if you're trying to get somewhere, like across the street, they need to be able to. But, on a general walk... Who's the walk for?

Awesome, love this I am a trainer myself of 3 years. Made a HUGE mistake in the first year telling people I could fix their dogs problems and it failed because homeowners weren’t working with the dog as well. I have decided that classes is my main focus untill I can make this a full time thing. I do this on the side after my 9-5… in the evenings.. anyway, thx for the video God bless

I make sure it's safe to let go of the lead...then let go of the lead and say 'Bye'....she moves like a shot to catch up...is that a bad method?

Every trainer gives a similar answer. Remove the dog from the stimulus. But... Is there a way to stop the behavior with work?

First off...THANKS! I was skeptical, but, long story short... I tried it and it worked! It was such a relief. She's a 1 year old 3-legged full Labrador angel. Except when she just drops like an anchor with no advance warning. I've only had her for a couple of days and I'm pretty sure the previous owner, one of my neighbors, didn't have her on any consistent walking regimen. And for me it's weird to have to deal with stopping, vs pulling. (I tell her sometimes I think she's part Basset Hound.) I never had this problem with my pit bull. LOL. (The stopping; the pulling was almost always just on the horizon. It was hard to walk Brutus with a loose leash, but it is a pleasure to walk Flipper with a loose leash because she doesn't pull. But that doesn't work when she stops.) I agree with the posters who stressed patience. And discerning observation to really tune into your pet's needs/rhythms. But after I've determined that she's rested and well hydrated, a simple, firm snap on the leash, along with pack leader confidence energy, DID get her up and moving. And it did not appear to cause her any distress. Disclaimer: Every once in a while I still opt for a simple dropping of the leash, looking right at her. and telling her: "OK. Go find your new Forever Home", and that usually does the trick. But not always. This makes a lot more sense. Also, I try to avoid using treats as "bribes". But I might consider trying treats as a lure once in a while, to break that mental freeze she seems to enter. Epilogue: Now, even though it's only been a couple of days, every time I walk to the closet that has her leash she walks to the door, stays, and waits for me to put on the leash to go for a walk. She also listens when I tell her to keep staying until I walk out the door, then she follows. She's a great dog and she loves walks! And thanks to you I can better serve her needs and maintain a consistent and HAPPY walking regimen. Thanks again. Yeah. UPDATE: #1 way to get her moving? THROW TREATS! But, the quick snap technique is great. NOTE: I think what I'm dealing with here is years of poor walking techniques by the owners. They ALL have had experiences carrying her home. And apparently she's used to that. So for now, I'm taking more shorter walks, armed to the teeth with treats to toss. The funny part was...I thought holding the treat in my hand was effective. It was for 1 walk. I swear. She's part T-Rex. She figured that trick out and it got burnt. So I had to start tossing and I ran out. Then it was mind vs mind. I motioned like I was throwing something, and that worked. For a while. Then I threw a piece of dirt and she ran after that then it was: "Let's go home and get treats. 😀

Managed to get our dog to stop by removing her and putting her in the laundry each time it happened. It didn't take long for her to associate barking at window with 'Time-out' in laundry, and the behaviour stopped in a week! Didn't have to cover up the window at all.

I moved three weeks ago and, since, my dog would walk with my husband, but not me. If I tried to go further than our block, she would pull back and start running home. I tried the pull-and-release technique after watching this video and IT WORKED!! We finally were able to go to our nearby park today and we were there for over an hour. THANK YOU! This technique was a total lifesaver.

Thank you sooooooo much! I was on a walk with my 3,5-month-old bernese mountain dog and he wouldn't move, always wanting to return home. I was doing the exact thing you described with pulling slowly. After watching your video, I returned to him for a second round and it worked like magic. He resisted a bit at the beginning, but then just nicely walked. Thank you.

My dog has a best friend at the dog park and they wrestle and play very hard - a lot of the other people at the park are horrified it's kind of funny.

Bro if your taking your dog out for a walk, let him stop and sniff , Ive nearly hit a few people who just keep pulling there dog along ! Especially big dogs my chiawawa walks 50x more than most German Shepard’s and labradors I’ve seen

I prefer Cesar's method of showing dominance and leadership. You can't give positive affection all the time. It's like raising a kid. You have to show dominance but in a loving way. If you throw a fit and spill your food out of spite then you don't eat.

So in 8 words ....get the focus on you with food/sounds

So I know this video was posted 10 years ago, but the “wolf pack” way of training has now been debunked. It’s rooted in the idea that you need to be the dominant member of the pack. But dogs do not view humans as members of their “pack” because we are not the same species and our dogs understand that. The whole alpha, beta, and omega way of thinking was even debunked for wild wolves. These studies were based off of wolves kept in captivity and we have now found that wolves kept in captivity and wolves that are in their natural habitat behave quite differently. They don’t really have “alphas” they have leaders and protectors. Wolves tend to operate more like a family unit than a hierarchy.

Well when they start tearing down and building a new house next door they won’t be passing by. So she will end up barking non stop all day is my worry.

I use what is good and positive for me. Any method which isn't aligned with owner of dog...will make issues. I do balanced training and I use what work for me and my dog. No what others think or say. ❤

I have a Anatolian shepherd and I have this exact issue when I try to walk her lol. She goes into a frenzy mode it’s so hard to break her out of that.

Realistically does this ever improbe to the point that they can enjoy the window? I had a dog who was not reactive and in the last 6 months has build up so much frustration to any living thing passing by our house window. It sucks that I have to close the window all day but just as your said the reactivity is happening on walks now too

Our two dogs (one is 5 the other is 17 weeks) do a mix of the first 3. Yes our older dog dominates when it comes to knocking the pup down, but after a bit she will give the pup a chance and she will flop over herself so our pup can come and "attack" her 😂

My dog is interesed in everything: bugs, leaves, unexistent cats in the bushs, smells, everything. His strategy is to stop and just lay down. If I give him a treat, he will sit to chew. And since he's a westie, it's not that easy to go down to give him a treat. It's really a pain to take him out

Treats on a walk?!? Really. Walks predominantly for the dogs benefit, yet we're supposed to give treats for them to participate? With the many dogs I've had the technique that has always been successful is what most people do - to sharp & short tugs on the lead followed by a stern 'come!!'. I had small dogs big dogs young dogs old dogs, and they've all understood that command. My wife on the other hand does a gentle sweet soft 'come' with little success. The vocal tone must match the lead control

I got two energetic dogs and they both growl at each other while playing lol at first I thought they were fighting but afterwards I realized that they share roles. My chihuahua will chase my pug and be on top and than it’ll be the other way around where she’ll cause him etc both very mouthy very loud for two tiny dogs lol I know because otherwise these two get along great lol it’s just when they’re playing it sounds like 2 bears are fighting 😂
