My husband and I adopted a rescue 6 months ago. She is a 15/16-month-old Lab/Staffordshire Terrier mix. She spent her first year in a cage in a kennel in a warehouse with 200+ other dogs. She is a VERY strong/stubborn 68-70 lb. bundle of energy. We have raised and trained five Labs previously and we "thought" we knew what we were getting into. What I did not factor into this was we live in a dog friendly condo community (seems like a person fit, right?) but she has ended up being ALL dog adverse. Our condo is in a resort town and is VERY busy in the summer months and quiet in the winter months. Fortunately, she is VERY smart and learns very quickly. What I have found is that she does best when it is just her and I at home all day and I can walk her frequently, keep her brain simulated with playtime and training and give her the naps she requires. She does best in a quiet, calm environment as she is easily over excited. I am retired and at home all day with her. I work with her from the time I wake up until I go to bed. We did have her transporter/trainer over for a training session which was good but still not enough to deal with the dog adverse behavior (bark, growl, lunge.) Our upstairs neighbor complained saying she is afraid of her and the board responded with a write up, a meeting and a warning.... In hindsight, this was probably not the best breed to bring into a busy condo situation. She is not your "typical" laid-back Lab and is over reactive to sounds of people coming and going etc. NONE of our previous Labs barked or were highly verbal and this Lab definitely is all of the above. The issue her is with a rescue...you really do not know what you are getting personality wise until you get the dog home. So be VERY careful in your choice and selection.

Last year, we adopted a 10 year old yorkie dachshund mix from Spain. She was about to be euthanized. She has become the love of my life. She rarely barks, has her own toys to chew, she's very calm and submissive. Never causes any problems apart from diving in the river lol I love her so much. Wished we'd had her longer. the best thing we've ever done. Her name is Stretch The only thing is, she does freak out in the vets.

We adopted a 3 month old great pyrenees. She's super shy, scared of the world and terrified of the leash. She pees while she's sleeping and completely soaks herself. She is slowly walking around more and exploring the apartment but then she runs back to her bed

Hi Fern, We adopted a 4 yr. old female Boston Terrier/Pugg mix. She has benn with us for 5 weeks and she is really a good girl with one exception which is walking with a leash. She stops and will not move. I watched your video and tried the "lets go" with little succcess. I reward her when she does a good job walking but I never know what to expect each time i take her outside to do her business. She loves the outdoors and we would love to take her on walks around the neighborhood if she would obey. Suggestions? Thank you, Carol M.

Great tips, and I understand this with the 'wisdom' of hindsight. We are soon to rescue a dog. We just lost our beloved rescue boy after 7 glorious years together to cancer. Our only comfort right now is that we gave him an amazing happy life from 3 yrs of age onwards, but oh boy did we make some naive blundering errors with him in the beginning. I hope he forgives us for being such well intentioned morons! In many ways, he taught us so much that we wish we had known before welcoming him in to our lives. His legacy now will be a better introduction for the next guy or gal that we will welcome in to our home.

Could you share more details about the errors you mentioned? It could really help people like me who are planning to adopt a dog soon to not make mistakes :)

Advice needed: Xoey is my 1st adopted doggy. We have had her since Saturday but .... She is not playful at all, sleeps all day long, does not come when called (no matter how hard I try) and happy/scared pees everywhere when I go near her. How could I possibly help her unwind a bit? I really want her to feel part of the family and at least play a bit with my other doggy ... Any proper advice from other adopted doggy moms or dads would really be appreciated please...

I recently picked up a stray from the street. I’d been feeding her for a few months prior to the adoption/ carrying her from the street into my flat. She is so so lovely but I wonder if she could still be potty-trained, general training etc. Her joint areas are rough and she looks young in general, so. I think she cannot be more 2 years old. One more question: would she be happier on the street? She has been a stray most of her life, I think. She and a bunch of others were abandoned probably as puppies, by just being left behind when the owner just bloody moved away. My parents are opposed to me keeping her and they think she’d be happier roaming the street. (I’m currently living in a country where there are strays everywhere.)
@nozari286 жыл бұрын
it depends on the dog, some get along very well with other dogs and some don't and seek only human attention/companionship. But generally most dogs are happier in a good home/family imho.

Your parents are nuts. Dogs don't belong out on the street!

1. Some dogs will hide their true behavior until weeks after you adopt them 2. Start your dog off in a small environment, such as a crate or a room locked off by a baby gate 3. Have several rules for the dog that everyone in the household follows 4. Go slow at first, dogs could get overstimulated if you introduce them to too many people/animals at once 5. Train the dog how to behave

Thank you for this video I think I know have a little more understanding on how to help my adopted dog. Me and my husband adopted a dog 5 yr old dog from a friend because she can’t keep him where she lives. We live on a second floor apt and he wouldn’t come up the stairs even tho he did that with our friend. Our new baby stayed downstairs in our garage because he wouldn’t move and his extremely heavy. We’re going to take him for a walk early in the morning to make sure he get more used to us and he get to know us, hopefully it’ll help. Any tips?

I adopted a chihuahua/yorkie mix a 5 months ago when she was about 3 months. She is absolutely perfect and I adore her, but she has bad separation anxiety whenever she is left alone. She is never destructive when people are with her but when left alone she goes crazy, she even ruined my carpet in my apartment when I tested leaving her home. So now I leave her in her cage when I leave (which is 2-3 hours a day) and she is perfectly fine in her cage if I'm in the room, but as soon as I leave she starts panting and barking nonstop until I get back. How do I fix this? I've been working with her for months and I feel like I've made very little progress compared to the amount of time I spent. Any tips?

Hi and welcome. well I just hope People are listening to adopt a dog is going to be tough. number one it will cost you expensively on vet bills Number one. you can only have one dog if you have pension credit but you are required to donate as much as you can to help the vets with prescriptions bill £5-10 is most welcomed. than paying £3-4.00 vet Bill your second Dog you will have to pay the cost of the vets bill. so be careful when adopting a second dog. today's pricing on vet Bills is Rather high.

I adopted 2 rescue dogs. Both 2 year olds. I was pleasantly surprised that they quickly adapted to home environment. They never barked. Not the least bit food aggressive. Slept with me at night. Walked well on a leash, not perfect but pretty good. My only issue was potty training. They're both tiny dogs, chihuahuas. So I decided potty pad would be best. Now I can still sleep in on weekends and my doggies can take care of their business. I just clean up once a day.
