FM really changed the sound of TOmmy's voice as opposed to the AM. More enthusiasm on the AM.

I don’t think the 5/85 date is accurate as I remember KFYI starting later that summer as I was getting ready for college (yes, it was from country KJJJ). I remember before they went on the air there was nothing but shuffling and tele-typing being broadcast. As far as the frequency swaps later on, it was sports KGME that originally moved to 550 from 1360 (KOY moving to 1230). It was about a couple of years later that they swapped 550 for 910 with KFYI.

Sophomore year in HS, I had just got into FM the year before, so, it was more WDAI and WSDM than 'CFL and WLS. But, AM radios were still in more cars until 8 tracks and FM stereo took over. Was nice to hear Teenage Lament '74 by Alice Cooper.

I have whiplash. Uncle Fred filling in for Uncle Lar'. Always the one who throws around innuendo like a bridesmaid throws rice at a wedding. All the voices of 1985. Mmmmmm, Fried Winston!!

The history in the description is incorrect as I was living in Phoenix at the time. (In fact, I still live there). KFYI 910 replaced the old KJJJ which was a country outlet on the 910 frequency. KOY, at 550 on the dial, would not be moved from that position until Clear Channel was formed in 1997 and gained control of both frequencies. Though it's a short aircheck, CVD sounds quite good here.

Crowhaven Farm was a great made-for-TV horror flick. Problem was those movies on the 3:30 movie on Channel 7 were cut to shreds for commercials.
Even this era of WLS was great. I loved their mix of personality and music, even while I was a junior in high school! I remember some of the funny lines Fred said! One was so funny, I had to pull off to the side of the road because I was laughing so hard!

I remember J.D. Freeman the market manager for Clear Channel Phoenix at the time, made some "signal swaps" that changed KFYI from 910 to 550 & KOY wound up at 1230 AM. It was kind of unheard of at the time. I had the chance to meet CVD when he was program director of AM 55 KOY as an AC music station back in 1982. Thanks for posting this blast from the past.

Larry Lujack was my favorite DJ when I was a teenager! I won a contest he ran. Had to be caller #11 and name the tune. I remember it well, I called and was caller #5 to start with and then hurried and called again and was #11! I won Neil Diamonds greatest hits. It was in the spring of 1971 and I was a freshman in HS.

Chicago seemed to have the best screaming jocks. Dr. Brock was absolutely the best. Whammo moved to Naples, FL and and became a born again Christian and said good-bye to anything but Christian radio. Sad to see a good jock fade away. Jocks never die, they just segue.
