I bought this album on tape in the 90s and knew Paul was in Mr Big. Didn't know he was this good! Also very impressed with Reb Beach's opener Black Magic

I created the idea and produced this album for Shinko Music in Japan. Al Pitrelli (guitar) Danny Miranda (bass) and John O Reilly (drums) did all the tracks. Here are the notes I sent to Michael Lee Firkins to guide him on for the tracks he was recording. He are the complete game plans for each of the four songs you play on. Please print with the tone and sound(s) reverb etc you want to present. This is an album for guitarists by guitarists. There will be moments for everybody to be classy and show touch, tone and phrasing, and time to just “rip for the joy of it. There’s no radio play involved, just time to be proud you’re a great player and a stylist. I want your style, your voice on these four cuts. “Something” is about phrasing and melody. You open the solo section in the track. This is a song to go for the goosebumps! “Birdland” has you all over the map. You open the song by playing the first run through of Jaco’s classic riff. You have a shot at reading the main melody and of starting off a solo section with a lot of space around you. Then you put it into gear. You reprise a Jaco part and at the end everybody takes shots soloing over the main riff into the fade. You will play on the 2nd, and 6th and 10th go around in this part. “Train Kept A Rollin” has many different parts. I’ve given you the “swing area,” so swing it! At 4:55 I have you joining Al Pitrelli for a double solo. Go for it - as it’s the end of the solo section. Al will play off of your part later, so kick his ass and make him work. Then I have you and him playing a bit from Liz Reed by the Allmans. “Memphis” is a bit of a rocker and you open up the song with some slide guitar (without the slide?!) groove with it. You also play that style as an interlude after the first melody. I gave you the “Quadrant 4” type solo and the classic riff from Bill Cobham’s Spectrum record. If it’s too much work, let it go and Al Pitrelli will fill it in later. At approx. 4:35 on the tape there is a two bar part that will be traded. You will play on parts 1 and 5. As you can hear, there are many rhythm tracks on this ADAT tape. Al has also included a pass on the melodies for every song, and a few solos here and there. The only thing that really counts is the bass, drums and rhythm guitar. If you like the keyboards in your part then play with them on. If not, don’t listen to them - let me know and I’ll make sure they are out of the final mix in whatever sections you like. I expect them to be pretty low anyway. This is a guitar record! So enjoy and if you any Q’s give me a holler. Be good John Stix

By the grace of the funk gods, I was able to see the Pepper’s with John twice since he came back. It didn’t even feel like real life… John’s ora is out of this world and his energy seeps through his band and the fans souls. I hope to see them at least one more time and they jam like this for 12 minutes 😢
