Good evening, it is not yet entirely clear to me whether those old electric block systems (Absolute block system, if I am not mistaken) with a wooden case were or were not influenced by the passage of trains for the purpose of occupying and freeing the section (block) towards to which and from which the train was respectively headed or from which the train came. Furthermore, it is not clear whether there is an electrical connection between the lever that controls the opening (switching from Danger to Clear) of the starting signal and the apparatus with wooden case. In other words, was it possible to pull the lever that activated the starting signal towards you without first having received electrical consent from the next station? However, it is common ground that where there is a token block it is possible to activate the lever that opens the starting signal even before having handed over the token to the driver, unless there is an error on my part. Thank you very much for your availability and collaboration

Many thanks for sharing that video. I had the pleasure of visiting the box (from the outside, of course) on 26th April, 2016, just a few months before closure. It's great to have as much visual recording of signal/gate boxes before they (sadly) go.

AS USUAL, DISGUSTINGLY THE SIGNAL BOX CLOSURE NOT ADVERTISED, SO UNLAWFULLY PREVENTING PEOPLE FROM PHOTOGRAPHING THE BOX BEFORE IT CLOSED, THAT I HAVE JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT, 21/MAR.2017. BUT IS IT STILL STANDING HOPEFULLY, SO WHEN I AM MOBILE AGAIN, AFTER HAVING JUST NOW LOST MY LEFT FOOT AND LOWER LEG TO POLIO AND RHEUMATIC FEVER, I WILL HOPEFULLY GET A CHANCE OF GETTING PHOTOGRAPHS OF IT MYSELF. BUT IF IT HAS GONE, NETWORK RAIL HAS UNLAWFULLY PREVENTED ME FROM GETTING MY OWN PHOTOS AND NEEDS AN OFFICIAL BOLLOCKING AND REPRIMAND AS SIGNAL BOXES ARE ALL OUR NATION HERITAGE AND SO NETWORK RAIL HAVE A LEGAL OBLIGATION TO PUBLICISE NATIONALY ALL SIGNAL BOX COSURES AND IF THEY DO NOT THEY ARE SERIOUSLY BREAKING THE LAW.

Peter, Send a Freedom of Information request to Network Rail and ask them to tell you their planned closures for twelve (or whatever) months ahead. I did that in January 2016 and so I knew that this box was due for closure later in the year. The website Signal Box also has closures for the years up to 2035 but their information isn't always correct. I missed three boxes by relying on the Signal Box information. They were closed a year or two after Signal Box stated and I thought I had missed them when I hadn't. By the time I discovered that it was too late.

BTW, Network Rail must supply the information you ask for within a certain period of time. My experience is that they wait until the last possible moment even though they could have supplied the information much sooner.

Used to cover this box for several years on regular Saturdays, it was always an enjoyable box to work. I remember Alan Deacon and Jack Neave. I guess they've passed on now. I can remember letting a Gedling train of HDAs loose just in front of the Grantham Nottingham (by arrangement with Trent). The driver went like the clappers over the crossover and towards Sneinton Jc. Seems like only last week. I guess even Trent has gone now though

Wish I'd taken more photos when I was there. Does it still stink of maggots and have huge spiders hanging under the eaves? :) No more squeezing in the Cotgraves or the Colwick jocko to the traffic. No more dobbing wagons on Spike Bank. No more TCB on the down line since the mid 80s either. I guess it's straight up and down except for the odd one into Total? Still, there's a lovely view over the river :)

Nice video. There seems to be an awful lot of junk on the block shelf though. I don't think the inspectors would have tolerated it in my day. We had a green pinboard for the stuff at the back of the box. It must be utterly sweltering in summer with double-glazing! Does Morton Crossing still exist down below?

Nice. Which company operates the 31s? I thought the only ones left now were in Network Rail yellow for pulling test trains and so on.

I'm afraid not. I'm the signaller and I've planted the tripod in the cess and just left it running when there was nothing about. If I didn't work here I'd be trespassing !
