Dear Jovanna. Thank you so much for this video. It has been a lifesaver in my darkest hours. I am a single mother separated from a long-term partner for 6 months now living in a one bedroom flat with my daughter. Most days, i dont even make ends meet. After losing my 3 month old son, i lost my sense of self. It's been 2 years now, and I can honestly say I have been fighting and pushing through. I have been teaching online for the past 2 years. I was a special needs teacher for 6 years prior to my sons passing. I have an upcoming interview for a secondary teaching post in Brunei. I AM TERRIFIED. It's the first interview. Could you please offer me any tips or advice? I went on your website to see if I could book a session, but in all honesty, i cannot afford to do so. I want to do better for myself and my living child. It's difficult to progress as a teacher in South Africa. I tried getting in contact with the guest, but there has been no response as yet. Thank you for the video❤

I'm still learning and taking notes myself! 😂 That's the key though: always be open to learning from everyone.

I'm glad I found your channel! I really enjoyed this video. I am 32, married, and currently working in a STEM related corporate field and I thought once I got here, I would be happy, but I feel something is missing... I've realized that my desire of climbing the ladder has changed. Do you have any advice about navigating those feelings?
@javonnamaerhys19 күн бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! You've already opened the door to navigate your feelings by being curious about them in the first place. When you're busy climbing the ladder, thinking about your feelings is sometimes the first thing to go because you don't have time, right? I would say your next step is to start using mindfulness practices like meditating and yoga to help you really get in touch with those feelings and also start looking for women who are living a life that has aspects you want for yourself. What are they doing? How did they get there? How would it look and feel if you were doing that? Journal these answers and that will also help you navigate those feelings. I hope that helps. 😊

I’ve always been a little different and I accepted it early on. My kids know mom is a little random but they also know I love them more than life itself…and would easily do jail time to protect them or my grandkids. No hesitation. Peer-EE-Oid. ❤

This conversation was very interesting to me as it pointed out not being acknowledged for your Doctorate, or the respect of said education. I don't have a master's degree or PhD. However, I have mad respect for women, especially Black women who do. I worked with a librarian who absolutely paled when I called her Doctor... She was not a Black female, but I wanted her to feel proud of the achievement that she has accomplished. I'm proud of any woman who has reached that pinnacle of educational success. Be proud. Don't hide your talent under a rock. You worked for it. Great conversation.

Agreed! We definitely need to be proud of the hard work we've done at whatever level. We spend too little time celebrating.

Listening to your body is such an important point and remembering we have agency to change situations is so important. I am only a 1/4 of the way through and still listening but I had to stop and say thank you for this conversation!

One of the other things that transformed that I forgot to mention is that karaoke is a huge in Asia and I am a now a convert with a full karaoke machine, a mini machine and a karaoke microphone I break out when I take a break during content creation blocks. 🎤I also hike occasionally...with a lot of complaints.

more of this please. specifically about acquiring visas and alternatives to "up and leaving everything behind."
@javonnamaerhys3 ай бұрын
Hi there! Every country has its own visa process (that can change quickly), so it’s hard to give specific advice. My advice would be to focus on countries you’re interested in teaching in to check out their process. An even better alternative is to apply at schools that handle that for you. Hope that helps.

Wow! Great convo with Dr. Kimani. Toxic work environments especially don't work for intelligent Black women🙂. I wasn't an educator, but had a KRAAAZY manager and alcoholic director who allowed so much abuse of employees. We were HR!!! I watched my BP go higher and higher and had to step out on Faith and seek a calmer environment for myself. Yes it was likened to an abusive relationship! Thank you both.

I’m a male AP (not your target audience), but I’m actually off today & JUST stopped checking work emails at 2:30 in the afternoon. I felt I could not take my day off and just relax. Our union tells AP’s & Principals that we have “undefined hours” so we are always expected to work. I’m also considering a return to the classroom because, while I LOVE my students, I can’t see how the AP role is sustainable for me.
@javonnamaerhys5 ай бұрын
It is definitely hard for everyone, so it's ok that you're not my target audience. I have been where you are before. Being expected to always work is unsustainable and two weeks off here and there is not enough when the intensity of the job takes so much away, especially from people who truly care about their students and teachers. I help people with job crafting, which involves changing what you do, who you do it with and how you think about it. Regardless of whether you stay in admin or go to the classroom, it's a useful framework for maintaining your wellbeing (and sanity) on the job. I have a free webinar coming up May 23 that introduces the basics: www.javonnamaerhys.com/webinar-job-crafting You should sign up; it will be helpful.
