Best to stem out and track out every project, for the purpose you describe but also as a backup as there has been times that I have lost a project file and can't continue a project.

The possibilities AI opens up in music, are for me very exciting. We're a long way off any tool that will make a big impact on good/experienced producers but it will come. The AI top 40 chart in 10 years or so may be filled with beautiful, mesmerizing music that we can barely understand. At least i hope so!

..but if it's beautiful and mesmerising and created by AI does it have the same soul/value as beautiful and mesmerising created by a human?? I'm not sure...what do you think?

@@andrewhindmusic8961 the AI is made by a human, so anything it then makes has at least some value. If you put the art before the artist then it doesn't really matter. I just want to hear something that i cannot yet even imagine.

2:00 unfortunately you're wrong here. I've got Suno/Udio to create some truly original and experimental work. Originality isn't actually something AI seems to struggle with right now unless you aren't prompting it creatively. The main things holding it back are sound quality and consistency. These services are also creating instrument combination that I haven't heard before. The threat is real and we need to be realistic about it.

Hey, good luck! I found it really tedious and difficult for a start but it gets much easier with practice! My instinct is to avoid changing the tempo if you can - I can't give a definitive answer why but it might cause issues at some point with editors if they use your music.

GAS has definitely been an issue for me, mostly when it comes to synth preset packs, but the constant deluge of new plugins (instruments, sample libraries, effects etc.) is also overwhelming. Acquiring these things at intro prices, or when they're on sale, might feel like we're saving money but there's a hidden cost down the line in the extra time required to sift through those things to find the sounds most useful to what we're doing. The more presets we own for any given synth (amplified further when you consider the number of synths most of us have), the more time it takes to look for the "perfect" sound when working on a project, which can end up bringing the whole creative process to a frustratingly screeching halt. Great advice here, Andrew, thanks, and thanks for sharing! 🙂

Hi Nigel, glad it was helpful! It's so easy to be sucked in by the "shiny new thing" marketing - not that there's anything wrong with most of the products we are offered it's just that there's so many and it feeds into our insecurities of not having good enough sounds!
@NigelMerrick
@NigelMerrick Ай бұрын
@@andrewhindmusic8961 Absolutely right, indeed. I also think we need to invest more time creating our own unique sounds (synth presets, wavetables, samples, field recordings etc.) as these are things that will ultimately set us apart from the crowd and also AI.

Hi, yes, my primary income is from music libraries. It took 3 years to see any significant income and I now have about 550 tracks with libraries after about 5 1/2 years. I recently set a goal of 100 tracks, not counting anything in the past. I did the math and realized I should do around 10 tracks a month which means 3 days per track. This artificial deadline I set for myself has been a critical key to being able to say, "Nope. It's done. No takesy-backsy now. Pencils down." and this has helped get rid of the attachment to any tracks and just keep looking forward.

These are very good tips. What helps me is, I dedicate a whole day to build a pool of sounds, presets and instrumentation that i want to use and stick to that pool when I start to compose. It screws your creative flow when you have browse through TB's of sound libraries to look for a specific sound while your brain is in "composing"-mode. Your orchestra must be ready to go when you let your inner Beethoven out. My creative energy has a daily limit of 4-5 hours, so its important for me to lay out the basic song structure as early as possible and not spend 4 hours on the first 30 seconds and then run out of ideas, because I lose myself in details and got bored with hearing the same 16 bars over and over again. It also helps not to think about mixing or even mastering, when you are still in the process of writing. Often I just improvise on the piano, record it and keep the bits i like.

Great explanation, I wasn't aware of stems when I first started because it wasn't discussed in a lot of introductory videos. When you want to use the 'multiple' audio export setting you just select the instruments you want to export as individual tracks and it creates them one at a time. But, turns out if you use MIDI tracks that use a rack plugin (instead of the individual instrument tracks like you have), they don't show up in the export options. For your setup, if you want to export groups of instruments, you might have to route them to a group and export that group track.
@WATCHINGTHEWATCHERS
@WATCHINGTHEWATCHERS 2 күн бұрын
Individual channels are not stems they are called channel track outs not stems. For a full track out you would send audio on each channel put and saved both dry no effects and wet with effects. This is required if you intend to get you music or project mixed and marstered by someone else. Stems is multiple channels grouped together effect on, usually its 1 Vocals, 2 main drums, 3 other drums, 4 Synths, 5 keys or guitar.

Good info and thanks for doing this. One thing though, if you're going to all that bother of making a video, you should probably include the multi option in Cubase Export, rather than saying you don't know about it, which made me think, "why am I watching this then?". It's pretty easy and you can go and do something else whilst it's doing it. It's only batch processing, it's not anything new. Meant only in a constructive way, I like your style otherwise.

Hi Andrew, thank you so much for doing this video, it is so timely for me. Although I have been producing production music for a while, I am now working with a new publisher who is asking for 30s cutdowns of 8 neoclassical trailer tracks that I have written. Great to watch you go through the pain(?) of producing the cutdowns and to see the various techniques you use. The trailer tracks are in the traditional 3 act structure and I was wondering whether I should try and give a flavour of each act in the cutdown? Alternatively, could I, say, use 30s from the final act?
@andrewhindmusic8961
@andrewhindmusic8961 3 ай бұрын
Hi and thank you for watching! Good question, I think it's really hard in trailers to get a representative snap shot in 30 secs! I think I would try to go for something that makes musical sense as a stand alone rather than worrying about it's relationship to the original full track - hope that makes sense? Alos ask the publisher...how do they want you to approach it|??

Hi Andrew, I think one of my best puchases ever was a decent chair to work from... I won't mention any brands, but I went to a computer outlet shop and tried sitting in some gaming chairs which are designed for long periods of sitting down. I am so much more comfortable now when writing music... I'm not sure why it took so long to work out a decent chair should be a key part of my setup, but there you go! :)

I love the topic and I am enjoying the video (I am 5 minutes in). I have always been fascinated by the "missing lines" from Smooth Criminal and wondered if they were cut out from the album version due to timing restrictions. If that was indeed the reason, I wouldn't be completely satisfied with it, given the relentless repetition of other sections that made it into the album version. Perhaps what I find more fascinating about that edit in particular is that the 4 missing lines belong between lines 2 and 3 of verse 2. However, thanks to the cryptic nature of the lyrics as a whole, it doesn't feel like it is missing a whole chunk from the middle of the verse. The lines I am talking about made it to the video version (3:16)
