Just tried the bachmann N class out as not been awhile and it's still bad ,the tender draw bar just hasn't a easy motion to it, and the tender and loco have to be almost touching for it to be , if you watch Sam's video on his reviews of this loco you will see the issue, so sadly it's a ' display ' loco only ,sad as there nice looking locos and were based at my local old steam shed of Three bridges, but anyone thinking of getting one? be careful as your need to sort the tender connections out.kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIKwfpypjJ55n68si=oILZbE82Agc3QOMX
@ianstransporthistorystuff81755 күн бұрын
Great video and I think the old hornby style tender connections much better, also find the bachmann tender connections a real pain, I've got a N class loco that the tender derails a lot ,but heard it's a common problem on these ,but I've got a bachmann Ivatt 4mt 2-6-0 that has a better tender draw bar, and is fine unlike the N class. Also I rember when I was very young and we lived in Devon visiting a early heritage railway and the Ex GWR pannier tank in BR black was in a very dirty condition along with the coaches, but that's how steam used to be what my parents and grandparents told me ,some railways have let their locos have that 'model weathered ' look 😂

I agree. The pickups make for a good runner, but the wires are too easy to break.
@patrickquinn59625 күн бұрын
It's 50-50 the pins always break on the older ones and have to be soldered the plug connector is just slightly better but if the wires were a bit stronger and wearable it might solve the problem nice informative video thanks Patrick Quinn IRL

Y'know, I'd bought Bachmann's 4F new, thinking it'd be super. It wasn't. It wouldn't run smoothly on my FB controller, so I sent it back, buing Hornby's latest and greatest. It did the same. So strange, back too, it went. I'd bought Hornbys K1 new, and it was and is superb. But since I wanted the 4F, I bought an Airfix cheapie. It was thrashy, noisy, and squealed but after taking it apart, cleaning and oiling the motor, It ran well. Since its well worn, its not silent, but it runs beautifully at low speeds and will pull heavy loads. So I bought another newer model. Good product. Because the tender drive worked so well, I bought a Compound, R 376 I think. It's not so good but looks so brilliant I'll find a way to improve on its running. Must admit to loving the tender drives. Sorry, guys! :)

Very good video you’ve made there Richard and yes ,I do like the Dapol 14 XX locomotive. If your motor has a blue winding it is manufactured in Japan which I think is a Mitsubishi motor a very good quality motor. But there is some really good news. Dapol are introducing an all new to 14 XX and 58XX variant this new model comes at a very great price, prices are set at £140 DCC ready the model will feature a diecast chassis and the cordless motor and firebox with flickering effect. Delivery is anticipated during the final quarter of 2025. I hope this is of some help all the best and happy modelling Phil

Have you tried spaying the 14xx pickup (plunger?) springs with Electrical Contact Cleaner? Have heard that this unclogs them on this model and brings them back to life. Worth a try maybe? Good luck. Happy Modelling
@Richardsrailway23 күн бұрын
This is the Hornby model that has wipers on all six wheels , that and the cheap motor inside were all Hornby did with it . The problem is it’s a very uneven model chassis wise , the centre wheel axel slot must be slightly higher than the lead axel slot , I could with a mouse tail file slightly ream the difference but it’s highly unlikely this would solve it as the tires actually are the problem I think as the lead wheels are plain and therefore it’s not a a hundred percent true . The Dapol ones maybe a bit better ?
@monsvillerailways573623 күн бұрын
@@Richardsrailway Ok I have the early Airfix model. Didn't realise that Hornby had tried to solve the problem. OO Bill suggests removing the tyres so the wheels have a better contact with the track.

@willlimarkams9050Ай бұрын
wouldn't it drop the level of the loco?
@RichardsrailwayАй бұрын
It wasn’t only that , but I found out the hard way that the centre driving wheel needs traction tires and re profiling those specific wheels was a schoolboy error on my part ! The main concern is the rear sprung single wheel under the cab . Often the spring is too tight, so removing a coil or two can remedy that usually.
@ianstransporthistorystuff8175Ай бұрын
Lovely class the 14xx and have 3 of them 2 airfix ones and a hornby one , but 1 of my airfix ones is is the best runner and it's got added ' super details ' too , I agree hornby or some one else needs to bring out a new one and totally re designed from the Airfix ones.
@RichardsrailwayАй бұрын
Exactly. The whole Titfield Thunderbolt set consists of ex Airfix railway vehicles, very much also found in the cheaper Railroad range from Hornby . NEM pockets would have at least been nice .

Doing the Ongar’s absolutely, you got a longer grub break at Epping instead of having to go to Loughton or Leytonstone for your grub officially, the Loughton crews who had that duty had their meal breaks at Epping . No management to bother you , no busy dusty tunnel sections of central London , it was fun .
@johnallen7807Ай бұрын
@@Richardsrailway Lucky you! I grew up in Loughton, remember my father taking the Tube to Liverpool Street every week day. He showed me the invoice for the house he had built after the war, quite a few fields around it, something like £1100 10s 6d lol, current Zoopla £2.7 million! I doubt if many young couples could afford that these days.

The Square aluminium box film camera shown is a Newman & Sinclair. I don’t know if The Elephant Will Never Forget, was filmed with one of these, but BTF certainly did use them. They loaded 200 feet of film stock. They were clockwork driven, with two springs, and could run the full load, just over two minutes, with one wind. They were widely used by documentary filmmakers, and were a highly regarded camera. The press camera with the large flashgun looks like a Speed Graphic, though other makers did produce similar ones. I have a Speed Graphic.
