Beautiful old cabin. Good video but the music is completely unnecessary IMO. Really distracting while trying to follow the narration.

i'd put additional roof supports across rafters horizontally a bit farther from the ridge, or some sort of truss
@lodgeinfo3 жыл бұрын
Yup, for sure. That's the plan this summer once we're able to mill some additional 4x6s. We ran out of time and supplies.. a typical super-fast Alaskan summer project!

Sorry to say, but the first time I saw the inside of the pre cave-in, my thought was, roof is too weak to hold the snow, and I was correct. i think you need a hug vertical beam at the front and rear and a longitudinal beam down the center. You got plenty of trees, cut yourself a 12 by 12 beams and no snow will take your home down!
@lodgeinfo3 жыл бұрын
Yup, we're on it and doing just that when we resume in spring. The pre cave-in roof was over 50 years old and it was a miracle it lasted as long as it did!

Did it to look like it was before. 4x6 spruce is a bit stronger than 50-year-old 2x4 pine, so I think we're in pretty good shape!

Great work your windows give them a light sanding before painting 🌲🍂🌲🍂🌲🌳🍂🌳🍂👍
@lodgeinfo3 жыл бұрын
Yup, thanks for sharing. We did sand and clean before painting. Painting vinyl is just one of those things that isn't ideal. We'll have to touch it up every year likely. The good thing is they'll pop out very easily and can be used on other projects. Eventually we are going to build custom wood-framed windows to put in the Pioneer cabin in place of the vinyl just so it has more a more original look.

It’s starting to look good , pin the top logs and also see if you can hind an RSJ on the ridge and cover it it will stop the roof falling in under in snow . Good luck.

Did you treat the logs before you put them back in place? They appear to be in better condition?
@tanik23953 жыл бұрын
We did not. We did cut some new logs to put across the top of the cabin as tie beams before we installed the rafters to help reinforce the structure of the cabin overall. The original cabin just had rafters with no tie beams. We decided not to clean or treat the logs so that the cabin kept it's original "aged" look.

Your roof appears ready to collapse of its own weight. Half as much snow load will repeat the drill you began with. Lovely country though, and decent video. I dislike your presentation.

Yup, the project is still in the works, but "on pause" for winter. We plan to finish next spring and document the final product:)
@lodgeinfo3 жыл бұрын
Thank you everyone for watching! This project is mostly a diary of our experience of dealing with our Alaska historical cabin's roof collapse following record winter snows. This is not a how-to and we're not professionals. The site is totally remote and we have minimal tools so we 'went with the flow,' yet speed was a necessity. It's not perfect, but that was never the goal. It is a good story though. We had to fly in by float plane each time we worked on the project and also hailed a few helicopters to sling in necessary supplies. It was not easy nor cheap, but high value with respect to memories. The project was simply a documentary of our battle to restore the cabin amidst the pandemic of 2020 while also operating our fly-in fishing lodge. The aim was to restore the cabin to near it's previous condition, which was "rough" but beautiful. It is a tribute to the old-timer that originally constructed this cabin back in the 1940s. This cabin is available to "rent" as part of our Alaska adventure bundles which can be viewed here: www.wildernessplacelodge.com/alaska-adventures/

Hello, I'm hoping you do at least one more vid showing the finished cabin. It looks much more beefy and sturdy and will last a long time. The job you people did has kept the rustic charm intact. Thanks for documenting the restoration. I'm sure it will help others who attempt to do the same thing to other old cabins.
@lodgeinfo3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, Yes, we plan to next spring! We ran out of summer and seeing as we have to fly to the cabin by float plane, it made it even more difficult to secure time amidst a crazy busy summer. We're excited to have it done and it's been a good project and a unique chapter of memories in our lives. Glad you enjoyed what we shared.

Comments were turned off on part 1 so posting here. HEARTBREAKING! I could clearly hear your emotions as you talked about it. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the rebuild. It's amazing your Cabin is that old and has survived since the 40s. Log Cabins as a building type normally have a short lifespan given the issues of needing constant maintenance and the invasion of pests so its good that the old girl is getting redone from the ground up. Thank you for documenting it as the Cabin will likely last a good long time from your efforts.

Hi. Yeah, good point. Not everything we do in this series is exciting to everyone. Just trying to document as much as we can. It's a project that we lived and documented much like a journal, so we wanted to include as much of the daily routine as possible. It's not a "how-to" and we're not pros.
