I had a KM-6A years ago and while I don't want to ruin your experience, I was kind of disappointed. Yes it can do your basic overdriven sound but imho my BX-16 does it better + it has an adjustable gain knob. If you want to get really rude then there's tons of guitar pedals. KM-6A - ok, but not great.

"Accent reduction" is nonsense. There is no "reducing" an accent, because there is no such thing as "non-accented" speech. There are only accents that are *perceived as* "more standard" or "more prestigious" that go un-marked because they are dominant. But anyway. Don't do that!
@StephenMcLeod18 сағат бұрын
Oh trust me, no danger of that. I got a DM from an American who wanted to sell me a course to reduce my accent and be more successful. I told them to fuck off.

Hasn’t layering instruments when recording a track been done since the sixties. Whatever it takes to make your sound. The people that criticise this practice are possibly jealous that they can’t do it. I’m in Northern England and you don’t seem to have a strong accent. It’s about time people started to learn how to understand the different accents. Thanks again for your great channel and episode.

I love the Scottish accent! 💖💖 I have a KM6A that I've had now for around 35 years. To be honest, I haven't done anything with it for years, but it was my main keyboard mixer for my live rig in the 90s and early 2000s. I might have to dig it out and explore its overdrive character now though.

Regarding the accent... A few years ago I binge-watched "Still Game." For the first 4 episodes I struggled with some of the dialog, but by episode 5 I understood everything just fine. And that's how I came to understand the Scottish accent. All it takes is exposure. Also, I think Still Game is bloody hilarious, but I could see where it might offend some. I liked it so much my daughter bought the whole run on DVD, and bought me a DVD player with the right region so they would play here in the US.

I talk about this a bit at the end of the video. In general the BX series sounds pretty different. It's hard to explain but I prefer the sonic characteristics of the KM. The BX series is also much more plasticy and not nearly as nice to use.

Studiomaster Mixdown Gold was a great console, the sound of early UK techno and drum and bass, way better than the Mackies that were also popular at the time, the eq in particular sounded fantastic, probably one of the last great affordable British mixers before everything went over to surface mount technology and cheap (sometimes leaky) electrolytic capacitors. Quite big but solid electronic design, and a joy to use with the big smooth faders.

The KM-60 and KM-6a were made in 1978, and they use preamp ICs, and will overdrive like transistors do. Later Boss designs, which probably include almost all other KM series, use OpAmps. Opamps do not overdrive, they brutally clip in ways that sound almost like digital clipping. Does that mean they won't work for this? No... they **might** still overdrive. For example. the BX-8 and BX-16 do overdrive nicely. That's because, on the input stage, I presume as over-voltage protection, there are two diodes across the preamp input. So those diodes will overdrive nicely. This is in fact the same type of design used in many overdrive guitar pedals. But the design is different from the KM-60, and I'm not surprised the overdrive sounds different.

Another wonderful video- thanks for the tips on the modern alternatives! While I do really appreciate how the build quality helps with the experience of the mixer as an instrument, if you just want the sound- many many guitar dirt pedals ( esp fuzz ) will work really well. You could get 6 metal zone clones - one for each output of the drum machine for the price of some vintage mixer- but it would not be the same experience at all. Keep up the great work!
