Your insertion (within quoting Andrew Soltis) is incorrect. Botvinnik was born under Czar Nicholas II (1868-1918) not Peter II.

What I find quite strange is, that even though on the crosstable of the 1939 Women's World Championship, Sonja Graf is shown as "stateless", on the crosstable of Moscow 1935, Emanuel Lasker is shown with the Swastika flag!?! Don't they have any decency? Lasker was of Jewish descent and was driven into exile just a few months after Hitler's rise to power in 1933. The Nazis confiscated all his property and forced him to spend his last years in poverty in foreign countries. Ok, I just checked the Wikipedia page for Moscow 1935, and apparently by now someone pointed out this faux pas, and they replaced the Swastika with today's German flag (which of course was not in use until 1949, but well, at least it's better than the Swastika...)

Another enjoyable and well-researched documentary! However, I had to chuckle when you stated "Steinitz could not represent England in the Olympiads"... I would have been very surprised if he did, considering that Steinitz died in 1900 and the first Olympiad was held in 1927.... 🙂

Hi Lucas, Thank you for your awesome video on Rubinstein. I have an original volume 1, I didn't know it was volume 1, and for that matter there is a volume 2! About increasing one's rating / strength at ridiculous speed : Fischer went from 1726 to 2626, 900 points in 2 years!! Love your videos! ❤

There is a claim made around 1:37 that Cuba had the 2nd "best" economy in the western hemisphere before the revolution. This really needs correcting. By "best" he clearly means best for the tiny elite of rich people for whom it was a playground. Most people in Cuba were dirt poor. The revolution led to massive improvements in health standards, literacy, child mortality etc. so for most people, the economy was far better after the revolution.

I don't think you interpreted the name bolshevik right. Bolshevik was a fraction of the communist party. Basically there was the radical group which was minority of the communists and the tame group which was vast majority. Somehow the future bolsheviks annoyed the real majority so much that they simply abandoned a meeting, and then they pushed through some kind of motion and had the majority on that vote. From that point on they called themselves bolsheviks and the other the mensheviks. Later on the mensheviks were essentially exterminated (killed).

Very nice video, but the V1 "buzz bomb" only made its buzzing sound while its ram-jet engine was running. It wasn't in any sense "guided". It would be more accurate to call it an "early cruise missile" or perhaps suicide drone.

The "famous" five queens game is a variation form the game Grigoriev-Aljechin won [the fictitious variation!] by Grigoriev, not Aljechin. In reality there were no 5 queens and Aljechin won the game as Black.

There is a nice anecdote about Sämisch - a very strong blindfold payer - playing blindfold. After WWII he had to play many blindfold performances in order to earn some money. On one occasion he was fooled: Ha had to play against club players and they had prepared a devilish strategy. Half of them played 1. ... g6 and the other half played 1. ... d6. On the second move some of the g6 players played Bg7 others played d6. Later some of the Bg7 players played Bf8, others played d6 and so on. After a few moves Sämisch war completely confused and resigned all games.

Dreckseele literally is dirt soul. By the way Zukertort (Jankiel Ezechiel Cukiertort) looks like Zuckertort = suger tart. However, I ma not sure if Cukier = Zucker. Anyway it should be pronounced Tsookertort or possible with a short "u".
