Fantastic stuff! Type In improvment should definitely be a regular feature (although I can appreciate it takes quite a bit of time to do)!

It's hard to imagine just how astonishing it was, hearing a computer speak back then, however how bad, back in the '80s. I found it fascinating. Nowadays, we are so used to hearing very natural speech coming out of our phones, and even AI responses to our spoken queries.

I just looked up the equivalent cost of the peripheral in 2024. Apparently, the speech module was £132 in today's money! It would be handy if you'd put up the current equivalent cost in your videos, to get an idea of the outlay.

Thank you Paul. Loved the hidden screen messages. I seem to remember something from years ago on Dark Star I think, but never know it was so prevalent. Thank you for the effort you put in to these.

@20:51 Not sure if it was a Loading Bug, but when i loaded Pole Position back in the day, the screen had a Gnome with a BackPack. This is probably the Real thing.

The fuller master unit was not well supported in software and really was a hobbyist unit for programmers. The most used features for me were the beep amplifier and the enhanced cassette interface with no need to disconnect any of the leads when saving to tape. The instructions did not really tell you how to get musical notes out of the sound chip and I only really had fun programming the orator speech chip. Bosconian was the only game I had which supported the sound chip in my unit.

Another great video. Thanks! I liked the hidden messages feature. A few years ago I coded an app for the multifaceted 3 to show them. When you pressed the button it searched the screen for any attributes squares where ink and paper match, and changed those to flashing bright magenta to highlight the messaged. A simple little app but I quite liked it. I did wonder if there were any messages in games themselves rather than just the loading screen. I didn't find any (but gave up looking quite quickly tbh)

I still have a Currah Microspeech, I remember it was really useful because you could type code without having to take your eyes off the keys. Especially useful with the old rubber keyboard with those complex modifier keys. FYI - it sounds totally different to the unit on the movie "War Games" where it was featured. I believe the movie's sampled computer speech was actually a human voice actor pretending to speak like a computer. lol
@gwishart
@gwishart 5 күн бұрын
The computer voice in War Games was played by John Wood (who also played Dr. Stephen Falken). He read the words for each line rearranged in a random order, so that the cadence and intonation would sound odd and mechanical when the individual words were edited together into the correct order.

Question to Speccy lovers, Why is there so many joystick models Kempston Sinclair 1+2 Fuller Protec????
@gwishart
@gwishart 5 күн бұрын
Because the Spectrum 16k/48k/+ didn't support joysticks without buying a plug-in hardware interface. Although Sinclair brought out an official joystick interface (the Interface 2), there were already several third-party interfaces on the market, which were often cheaper and/or offered more features than the Interface 2. These interfaces weren't necessarily compatible with each others joysticks, and weren't necessarily read using the same method.
