Great show. Just to correct though that Magic Meanies is a clone of Mr Do!, even plays the same music

Yes was just going to say the same. In particular that layout of the first level is very distinctive. It's a strange character, whereas every other level the pre-dug tunnels are basically the last digit of the number of the level (so the number 3 for levels 3, 13, 23, etc.). It would have been interesting to see if the levels of this game followed the same pattern.

Nothing beats Tim Follin's Chronos and Agent-X soundtracks on the 48K.

Vectron features the best ZX Spectrum beeper tune IMHO. Composed and programmed by Tim Follin, too.

Great stuff! I don't know if anyone else experiences this but, after 33 years I still get excited by game type in listings (my heart rate actually goes up ;P)! A free game plus the joy at finally getting it working due to typing errors (or even misprints which gave you a buzz by getting it right when the mag didn't). Mind you, it'd often turn out to be pants so...move on to the next type in ;)

Always feel happy when I see there is a new episode released. One of the few KZbin shows that I like to watch on the TV. Quite the sight to see all the spectrum Roms in one shot

Many 48k games have AY sound, but it ends up disabled because the game, rather lazily, only checks if the machine has 128k by flipping a memory page, but never for the chip itself. If I remember correctly, most Hewson, System 3, Dinamic and OperaSoft games can have their AY music enabled on a 48k machine with a POKE or two. As far as games that have AY music enabled even on a 48k machine - Pulsoid, Bosconian and maybe Motos come to mind. In Chronos, if you listen to the intro track, AY adds another percussion channel.
@BuckingTheTrend20089 ай бұрын
Ah.. that would make sense then. Is there a list of such pokes?

Great to see another episode :) I am constantly amazed by all the great work in recreating old hardware with a new twist, if they work out the incompatability issues that Interface 2 replacement would be great. With regards to the ZX-AY, Defenda by Interstellar software is something that might work with it. I know under emulation you can run the game on the 48K model with AY enabled and the AY sounds play so it might work with the ZX-AY. Magic Meanies looked like fun. I do always try to find Mr Do clones on the Spectrum as the original arcade is a favourite and the fan made Mr Do for the Spectrum is one I often play.

Im surprised fiendish freddy looked so good on the speccy. My local computer shop always had the amiga version running on demo mode to show off it's capabilities, i always just assumed the spec version would look now like it.

I used to have Fiendish Freddy's Big top o'fun for the Spectrum on tape. It seemed to take Ages to load. It looked nice & sounded nice but i only played it once.
@raithrover19769 ай бұрын
I bought it after playing on my friend's Amiga. It was decent but not a patch on classic multi-event games like Daley Thompson's Decathlon / Super Test and Hyper Sports

I owned that circus game at the time as a 128k multiload it was horrendous. many minutes between each attempt. a plus 3 version would have made all the difference

Such a shame that games like Fiendish Freddie's Big Top of Fun only port graphics directly over from another system without adaptation to the ZX Spectrum's colour graphics layout. Careful adaptation could yield excellent results beyond monochrome graphics. But this takes time and effort to do including tweaks to the game's mechanics so it was often omitted.
