I used to belong to a cave group, a grotto in the Bay Area. I'm looking for caves to explore in Northern CA and Southern Oregon. Can you point me to any local caving groups? Either way, new sub here. Thanks for the content. :D

If this is in the upper end of Slate Creek before you climb up Hayes Hill I have pics of the guy who lived there off and on for years. msg me if that's where you were! I also have pics of how he worked and exactly where. 🙂

I love to go there. I just don't like how popular it is. Plus there is almost knowhere to take a leak and god forbid you need to take a dump😅. But im new and don't know alot of places. But ive done my best there. Classified 8 buckets to ⅛ inch material and got exactly 1 gram. But i had to bust ass all day in the heat to get it

Yeah, I can’t blame ya! It’s a huge difference between getting out in the mountains, and just stepping off the freeway with a short drive to the river. But I can definitely say there’s a lot of other opportunity out there if you’re just willing to go grab a pan and go for a hike!

Out of respect for the locals I’m going to keep it private for now, but I can direct you to some neat mines if you’re interested?

Suggestion: on that loose portal head, get a couple of really long D-bolts and square washers, build up a face of lagging against the head, and then bolt it in as tight as you can without breaking the timbers, and finally back-fill it with sack-crete so it makes a solid seal against loose junk, and makes it where it can't shift.
@CTMiningАй бұрын
I really appreciate that suggestion, that’s a great idea I definitely agree!

The father of a friend of mine owned the original patented Gold Hill strike. We went up there and filled several five gallon buckets of tailings. We found some beautiful wire gold. About 13 grams.

I mostly work in washington so pardon my ignorance here: what's with the area being "open to mining"? Is there restrictions on the rest of the watershed or is it all claimed up / private property?

I grew up on Old Highway 99 between the Rock Point Bridge and Valley of the Rogue State park and we had 4 lots across the highway on the South bank of the Rogue River. I found a lot of gold on our lower bank.

The Sawyer Decision did not ban hydraulic mining. The judge's decision limited certain aspects of the practice such as preventing sediment discharge into the waterways. Technological development of hydraulic mining continued largely unregulated because most of the focus of the Sawyer Decision was around the American River and the agricultural areas. Hydraulic mining on the Klamath wasn't effectively quashed until the 20th century with clean water laws at the state level and then federal. Also see the Caminetti Act of 1893.

When I was a teenager, my friend and I were smoking a doobie with an old hippie we had met at a swimming hole known only to locals at the time near Mt. Shasta. He was showing us crystals he had found and then he pulled out a quartz specimen, about the size of a baby red potato, with a substantial gold nugget at the base and smaller gold specs and flakes mixed in. We asked him where he found it and he said, "In the area", smiled a big grin, tipped his hat and walked away, but not before giving us each a small crystal and thanking us for the smoke.

My father probably knew the miners. Back in the depression my father got deer and wild game for the loggers and miners in Galice and he used to tell me stores about all the fish on the Rogue river and all the plentiful game back then. My grandparents had property next to Zane Grays on the Rogue when he was writing westerns there.
