I think this man speaks the truth. I studied Economics and there is always talk about the invisible hand of the Market in setting prices and demand and such. But the Military is real and Government has a huge say in our Economy. People have accused me of being a liar and all when it comes to Economics but there appears to be a lot of secrets when it comes to Economics and if I am accused of lying when I spit out textbook answers what does this say about our Educational System? In any case, based on my experience, I have tremendous respect for the Military and it may be the best institution in America today. Just as no private company could have led America in the space race, innovation coming out of Military Research is extremely important in the development of the next generation of products.

The Free Market didn't play a role in the advent of personal computers...really Norman? I def believe in government-funded research but private companies play a big role not only in research but in bringing things to market. Then those companies compete with each other and consumer goods get better and less expensive over time.

See how ridiculous that reasoning is??? 😀

Really, Professor? I thought "We the People" funded/supported the military ... enterprise. I believe this is fairly well understood by anyone who has taken the least amount of time to think about it at all. Especially if you've been in the ranks. Or gone to work for a major "defense" industry player afterwards. (Doctoral dissertations can, do, often exempt one from military conscription, after all; otherwise, it's stay with the school, and enjoy the better pay scale -- right, Doc?) Too bad, I guess, for the "lowered IQ" standards introduced for the troops by McNamara in 1966 (see: Project 100000; McNamara's Folly, et al.). As for institutional arrangements like MIT (Lincoln Laboratory); Lawrence Livermore (UCB); Los Alamos National Laboratory (also Triad National Security, LLC; whose president and CEO is director of Los Alamos); ... Well: Hooray for Defense, y'all!

What's distressing about what Noam reveals is not so much that this systematic lying and brainwashing happens but that most Americans still remain blissfully ignorant to it. Perhaps even worse is the lack of personal initiative and drive by average Americans to figure this stuff out on their own. Yet now we have a complete whitewash in which praising the military and repulsively saying "thank you for your service" reflexively and blindly while being forced to endure military celebrations at sporting events among other places all acting to reinforce the blindness Chomsky speaks of here. The easiest summary is to realize that everything you are taught about America through official channels is wrong and go from there.

@@lorenzomcnally6629 Thanks for that rambling, biased, incoherent and ultimately pointless attempt at a rebuttal. A very long-winded indirect attempt to indict the left has nothing to do with the specific point I raise. The US is a chronically lying bully that is intentionally brainwashing its own citizens to love war, murder, genocide and terrorism because it blinds its citizens to the point where they cannot see what their own government does and the press goes along for the ride by not using any of this language to describe what the US does to others. Defending the US military is not something to be proud of. Pretending this is a left vs right debate in which one side is inherently good and right and the other wrong and evil and responsible for all ills is embarrassing. Try digging deeper.

The government isn’t building or designing the stuff. They lay out the design specs and private industry’s job is to meet those specs. A key driver in the need to advance tech, but don’t think for a moment that government innovates.

Most innovations are based on government funded research. The private sector doesn't innovate, it's driven by profit not progress. It's more profitable to build things poorly and then charge the customers a second to fix it. That isn't innovation.
