I really want to be a successful fantasy author someday, and I look up to Brandon more than any other writer whose works I've ever read. I'm so glad for these awesome lectures. They've really helped me a lot already, and inspired me to keep working on the story I'm currently attempting to write. Also, I can't wait for the third book in the Stormlight Archive to come out. It's so far away! D:

Making stories is easy and instinctive to me. The problem I have is the skill I write with and the way it sounds. I also straight up hate my own writing (not the stories, the basic mechanics of it).

Thank you for sharing!!! Brandon Sanderson has inspired me to start writing and this information is extremely helpful! I really enjoyed what he said about interlacing the world building throughout dialogue and throughout the story so that it's fun and easy to digest as a reader. I feel that he definitely shows this skill in the Stormlight archives. I will definitely be watching more of these! Thanks!!!!

I WANNA GO!!!! My favorite author and my dream of becoming a published author. I totally want to go here, maybe one day. Just not now, I can't relocate for a class, but I would love to meet Brandon, he's just a unique person and an excellent author. As I said, maybe one day I'll get a chance to do something like this. Thanks BYU and Brandon for publishing this. You guys are wonderful!

Why are people so whiny? You don't know what her reasons are for having to bring her child along with her. Bare in mind, she's paying for the class, also has to be mindful of absences, and you're getting it for free. It's like when people pirate a movie and complain when they see the silhouettes of the people who bothered paying to watch it in the cinema. They paid, so they can get up at their leisure and the only other people who can rightfully complain are the other people who paid. If you were in the class and had paid for this time, I could understand that you want what you signed up for, so on that front, I think it was disrespectful to the other students. But then again, she ALSO paid, and by attending a class which has other people and evidently no "no children" policy, I suppose in a way you did sign up for it. The same thing for conventions. If they allow children, expect them to be there. I don't think you have a right to moan if you're sitting here on KZbin. You're getting million dollar wisdom for nothing. Be glad it's being posted up at all. Like Brandon said: not many people ever talk about a lot of the things he's teaching, and if they do, they're charging for it. Come on, I'm pretty young and even I'm not that entitled. Get over yourselves.
@Heirr9 жыл бұрын
***** I see why you might think that, but really they're different. Like I said in the original comment, there is not a 'no children' policy, otherwise she would have been kicked out, or wouldn't have turned up at all. But I would imagine there are policies which would require you 'dress appropriately' (likely linked to the social conventions), so no, it's not the same thing. If however, they said that you were allowed to come into class naked, THEN your point would be correct. Like I said, it's about what you signed up for. Children are obviously allowed, whilst being naked most likely isn't.
@Heirr9 жыл бұрын
***** That being said, she may be a bit inconsiderate for doing it, but it's well within her rights, so long as it's coherent with their policies. We may not like it (I certainly don't want to hear a crying baby during a lecture) but you have to tolerate it, because that's the agreement you made by attending that specific class.
@seventus9 жыл бұрын
Agreed, and it's not really that annoying anyway.
@Heirr9 жыл бұрын
***** Exactly. I was expecting it to be impossible to hear the lecture. It was noticeable sure, but the way people are acting you'd think it was way worse.

I get what she means by whiny. Holden Caulfield is having a genuine crisis. He isn't complaining there is nothing on tv. Now, some people do not like HC because they find him annoying, but that isn't complaining about what's on tv.

Thank you for sharing this, it helped me. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4fCdGWhmrl5f9U&t=36m20s I am beginning to write science fiction fantasy as a hobby, but approaching it seriously. I initially struggled with proper third person limited. Your perspective on dialogue being interrupted by the narrator too often was enlightening and will directly influence tomorrow's revisions and my writing in the future.

I think its a shame so few boys read YA fiction. I've just been thinking about it, I have always read a lot but when I think about it I did kind of go straight from childrens books to adult books without much in between. I read some alex rider and artemis fowl, but that was pretty much it. In the UK girls are consistently performing better than boys at 16 in their academics. I honestly think this is part of the problem. I've always quite arrogantly assumed that I didn't read much YA because I was reading at quite a high level, but my girlfriend, who is definitively smarter than me, apparently read a bunch of YA and feels that most of the books were bizarrely marketed towards girls when they would likely fit both genders. modern gender stereotypes for boys encourage them to be loud and brash and leeetle stupid. I wish that wasn't the case.

It's really funny because you can see his creative mind ticking when these story ideas are being talked about. As a storyteller, there is nothing better than the one thing that really opens up a universe, and it is always something small. You see the whole story all at once, one time, and then it closes up and you have to work to dig it all back out.

I think there's a bigger point about Anakin Skywalker's virgin birth being missed, especially taking into account the end-point of the story where it's implied that the devil whom Skywalker is making a Faustian bargain with might have knowledge of that creation. Could Anakin have been engineered as a tool of destruction for the Sith? We don't know and makes that point endlessly interesting.
@TheKrazyLobster10 жыл бұрын
Check the Writing Excuses Podcast on that topic. It's the one talking about the Hero of a Thousand Faces, if I'm not mistaken. Brandon explains that Lucas was a student/pupil/follower of the guy who created the "Hero's Journey", and thus he decided to implement one of the elements of the original Hero's Journey - the virgin birth. Also, if you read the Star Wars novels, everything becomes much clearer and you don't have to go crazy.
@swankmotron10 жыл бұрын
Krazy Lobster I'm super-familiar with Joseph Campbell's work and would consider myself a student of his as well, but that's a moot point. Yes, it's prevalent in most of the monomyth stories, but Lucas didn't just show-horn it in there. And it's fine that people who don't care as much about the prequels (like Brandon and Howard) would not dig deep into the story and understand why he did it and just claim it's cramming elements in for the sake of cramming elements in, but there's more going on in the prequels than they give credit for. That's my point. And why would I go crazy?
@TheKrazyLobster10 жыл бұрын
Bryan Young I would politely disagree, but I would beg you excuse me from arguing.
@swankmotron10 жыл бұрын
Krazy Lobster Then why did you try to disagree in the first place if you weren't open to a discussion on why you might be (and in my sometimes humble opinion ARE) wrong on this one?

Bryan Young I won't read your commentary. And I won't reply anymore. If you wanna waste your time, and what's infinitely worse, MY time in pointless arguments on youtube, be my guest.
