There are deep truths here that can only be fully conveyed emotionally as well as intellectually, and music, we all know, is an emotional language, a language of the heart and of the spiritual consciousness. The message in this song is one of the most important messages for a socially conditioned Westerner. Britain was a disease that flowered, and it desiccated and destroyed our lives before going on to tear up the whole of humanity and destroy our once beautiful, perfect, whole, total, unspoiled living system of Mother Earth. You and I are Mother Earth, so let's shoot the world with black songs calling for her liberation, our liberation from the disease process of the white mind and white society. I am white in skin colour but black in heart, and Mother Nature is often called a black woman. She emerged in Africa after all, as did we all.

Another amazing fact about the late Judith Durham: from the age of four she was affected by a severe lung disease called Bronchiectasis. Symptoms typically include a chronic cough, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, chest pain and wheezing. To have had such a terrific singing careen while dealing with such an affliction is exceptional.

Well said. Both of you. I grew up after Simon & Garfunkel's era but always loved their music. It defined my 20s in so many ways.

As a parent, this song always makes me think of what it is to be a parent. The unconditional love, the sheltering and nurturing, gradually allowing a new human being to grow and spread their wings and become independent but with the knowledge that mom and dad will forever be there, just over their shoulder, to pick the up when they fall, soothe their hurts, and always be their strongest, staunchest supporter, no matter what the circumstances. I used to sing this to my daughter when she was a baby and now, nearly 35 years later, I still mean every word.

In those days it was considered polite to attentively sit and listen to a performer, especially on a ballad like this. Dance tunes were a different matter.

You really need to listen to A-ha "Sun Always Shines On TV". The video is a continuation of "Take On Me" video, with another even greater song (in my opinion).

Check this mid 80's bombshell Jam - The artist is Nancey Martinez - and the song is called "For Tonight" - horns, piano, you will not be disappointed - no one reacts to it because they don't see it!

This song was written by the late great Roy Orbison. His voice was incredible and frequently referred to Operettic Rock. Linda's version is incredible too. Hard for me to choose between them, but I think maybe I'd pick Linda's version by a narrow margin.

I always prefer an actor singing to a singer acting. Donna Summer’s version is very good but I prefer Harris’s especially because it’s part of the 2 great Jimmy Webb/Richard Harris albums. Jimmy Webb’s songs are always terrific.

Mark's solo stuff is good too. He always plays one of the characters in the stories he's telling. In Why Aye Man he's a brick layer finding work in Germany. In Marble Town he's a hobo who has to lay low in a cemetery to escape capture. In Baloney Again he's a black man trying to get his family cross country safely.
