Sting: “I think it’s a nasty little song, really rather evil. It’s about jealousy and surveillance and ownership”, "I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it's quite the opposite." Still, one of my favorite songs of the decade.

@@Isleofskye ? Safe to say most people can see past the lyrics and appreciate the song as being a work of genius and the fact that it remains the most played song in the history of radio speaks for itself. Looking at some of the biggest contemporary bands in the world including Maroon 5, it’s worth remembering that their song ‘Animal’ is one of their most successful singles and remains hugely popular throughout the world which just goes to prove your point of view to be complete nonsense where younger audiences buy into dark themes within music today just as much as they did back in 1983

I can't believe it, and you're not alone, it seems many do not recognise a DOUBLE BASS. Classic orchestral instrument usually played with a bow similar to a violin bow but larger.

@@generationgapreacts ... Yeah, it's called either a 'double bass', 'upright bass', 'standup bass' or simply an 'acoustic bass' ... Often used in orchestra arrangements.
@tomenrico6199
@tomenrico6199 Жыл бұрын
The double bass is not commonly seen in modern pop and rock music, but it is an essential instrument in jazz music. The classic jazz combo almost always includes a double bass, though the electric bass has made inroads in recent years. For example, the Dave Brubeck Quartet (famous for the song Take Five) consisted of Dave on the piano, accompanied by a saxophone, double bass and drums. And when used in jazz music the bass is typically plucked, not played with a bow. The opposite is true in orchestral music, where the bow is prevalent, and plucking, which is called pizzicato, is less common.

Ive heard it described as a wedding song, a beautiful love song, a breakup song and a stalker song. That last one is close. In an interview Sting gave awhile back he said it was actually written about the paparazzi that follow celebrities everywhere and believe that the celebrity belongs to them.

It's a fantastic song. I think it is distinctive because musically it sounds like a love song, and it is sung that way too, but lyrically it is darker in tone. It is that juxtaposition that makes this song stand for me.

The video to this song is based round an old black and white clip of a song that was found on one of the first jukeboxes from the 30's I think. The makers of this video pop duo Godley and cream who used to be in 10cc had saw a BBC TV show all about this very old jukebox and in one of the clips there was a three peice Jazz band. And a double base was being played in it. They showed Sting this TV show and he said he had already watched it and like them wanted the video to be a bit like this old clip. SO thats why there is a double base in it. Sting can actually play an up right base but I think it's just a base guitar on the actual song.

It bothered me back then that many people didn't grasp the message of this song. It's about a twisted, controlling love. Later Sting made the song "If you love someone, set them free" to stress his view of the nature of love. If you are curious about another song with a twisted view on love (even worse), you should check out "Jeanny" by (the late, Austrian) singer Falco. Regards from the Netherlands!

Girls it is a Stalking Song, your misinterpretation I'll put down to you both having a kind and loving nature. The instrument is called a 'Double Bass'. It's usually seen in orchestras. It was also a mainstay in the 50's early 60's in skiffle bands, esspecially in The UK. John Lennon was in The Quarrymen a skiffle band. Back in the day musical instruments were expensive kids would improvise a double bass using a tea chest, a broom handle and a length of string.

On the surface tis is a beautiful romantic song. But In actuality, it is one of the darkest, creepiest songs to hit the airwaves. (I have not read any other comment before I type this, but you are probably being swamped with comments like this.) The dark view of this stalker song is not just my interpretation of the song, Sting admits it himself. I got the following from a Financial Times article, but I've seen it in multiple places. "Sting felt that the mix of light and darkness was “all about my life”. It derived from the mood swings he experienced amid professional success and marital failure. But the “really rather evil” song about “jealousy and surveillance and ownership” had an extra significance. It summed up The Police’s troubled internal dynamics." For a less traumatizing Police love song listen to "Be My Girl- Sally."

Sting was in the midst of a painful divorce when this was written, having met his current wife, and it is quite creepy really: It’s the declaration of intent from a jealous stalker. Yet countless couples have insisted on playing it at their weddings - hopefully they didn’t pay attention to the lyrics. He plays a double bass in the video - the original bass instrument - but it’s for visual effect only, he plays a regular electric bass on the recording. It has a beautiful melody that completely whitewashes the sinister lyrical content, which is basically a song about a possessive, creepy, control-obsessed stalker. @@lorddaver5729 It is entirely the point. If you think stalking is romantic, I suppose this would be your song.

Good God... This is a stalker song. If a man said this to you, you'd get a restraining order...
