Nice video mate. One question... How is the downclimb?
@Astilath27 күн бұрын
@@cdskateboarding thanks dude! 2 options for descent! One is to return to the start point via a stepped easy gully (less than grade 1 terrain). Or from the top ridge you can walk down easily on either side of the crag on well defined paths. Though often this is combined with another route from the Heather terrace/east face of tryfan.

Great video as always, Rhys. Considering the best grade 3 to start off with and this looks like it has potential as it seems much shorter than Cneifion for example?! So it might offer a great intro into the next grade. Correct me if I’m wrong. The holds look plentiful against the exposure. 🤙🏻
@Astilath4 ай бұрын
Plentiful holds but suspect rock in places and generally lower quality than some of the others but I guess it's fairly straightforward! If you want to test the waters, can try little tryfan, which is a good start. Good holds. Reasonable exposure. Shortlived if its a bit much. Good rock quality. I'd always recommend that as my go-to starter grade 3.

Thank you! Seems like the vote is tending towards commentary over music. Although both are fun to make. I think the choppy videos are a drive towards awful tiktok style <30 second videos. Shorter videos are preferred by the KZbin algorithms. Some metrics seem based on "people still watching after x% of video runtime". Which is obviously favoured by shorter videos. But not good for longer scrambling "route guides". That's not my priority (though better stats would be nice) but I'll mix it up eventually with shorter bouldering and trad route videos. Enjoyed that video and the commentary Rhys. It's hard to say "Grade 2 should feel adventurous but not too technical etc" as that's subjective... G2 is steep enough for a fall to probably be fatal. the biggest danger for scramblers is going off route onto harder terrain and your video is very helpful in this regard
@Astilath Жыл бұрын
All climbing grades can be a bit of a joke. 😅 To be fair, even most grade 1 routes carry a significant risk of injury or death if you're unlucky or careless. That description was a brief/poor explanation of how I rationalise scrambling grades. I have always thought of it like... Grade 1: simple tech and limited exposure eg. Crib Goch. Or techy and less exposure e.g. tryfan north ridge. Grade 2: a bit more techy while being less exposed/less techy while being more exposed. With maybe some other factor like route finding being awkward or the route always being wet. E.g. Bryants Gully or Esgair Felen direct. Grade 3/S: some (or all, for an S) of the above to a greater extent. Maybe my meaning didn't come across so well. Not for the first time! As you say its very subjective and of course all it takes is a loose hold, a wobble in balance or a even just a bad mood and what would normally be comfortable suddenly feels terrifying. I climbed cneifion arete in winter once, had a migraine come on for the second pitch. I went from "great fun!" to "is this how I die?" In about 5 minutes! Luckily I was with a partner, climbing with gear and I still managed to lead safely. In hindsight it was still great fun in a twisted way 😅
@thebaldscrambler Жыл бұрын
Nice explanation of the sloping left ramp near the top. I prefer the talking as you provide insights into where you're going and what you're looking for, why you're taking a certain line etc. If you look at KZbin's analytics, you should be able to see the "average percentage viewed" figure and over time, you can compare this to other videos you have. I suspect vids with talking will hold the attention of the viewer for longer rather than just music and footage.
@Astilath Жыл бұрын
Thanks dude! I will look at that! Not really explored the analytics. What started off as a bit of an exercise in fun has proved a little more popular than I'd anticipated 😅 Thanks for the feedback! 😁 If you've got any route suggestions I'd love to hear them! Thinking of Parsons Nose next. Then getting round to shark buttress and bilberry terrace!
@thebaldscrambler Жыл бұрын
I've found that my vids with average percentage viewed of above 40% tend to get shown more prominently on KZbin, I have a couple over 50% and one of those has had 18k views so I'm always trimming the footage down and trying to cut out the fluff but I'm still learning myself. Having wide-angle footage from a GoPro on a ledge or tripod seems to help and drone footage adds a sense of scale which is hard to achieve with a GoPro on a head strap but it's a total pain having to stop all the time to setup up cameras/tripods/drone etc and editing is more difficult with dozens of different cuts. Route wise, how about Shark Buttress and Chasm Face combo? You wouldn't need to walk far with both being close to each other and both are at upper grade 3. I published the Eastern Terrace of Cloggy scramble on my channel a few days ago and the western terrace looked way more challenging and doesn't have many ascents logged. @@Astilath
@Astilath Жыл бұрын
@@thebaldscrambler I tried to film chasm face. It didn't really feel like scrambling after that short wall. Quite a laugh though! West terrace of cloggy felt like the grade 3 was for risk rather than technicalities but the rock is very unique! So that's a good shout! 😁 I've not really got the budget for multiple cameras and a drone, unfortunately. I'd invested in an auto-tracking drone years back but the company flopped. It was a kickstarter thing. Got my money back. But no drone. Thanks for the advice! I should pay more attention to that stuff! 🙈

@Astilath Жыл бұрын
I'd say that 3 is similar to 2 but with either more exposure or a more technical section. This has a technical section to start (the corner) with a fair bit of open ridge scrambling later at about G1. The holds are all great. But the start is a bit steeper than you might have found on G2s.

I enjoyed watching that. I like the line you took at 5:25, I did this route during the week but couldn't see any decent holds on that section, just the vertical crack and the sloping rock to the right down into the gully, so I went back down and round to the left. That looked like a really juicy scramble up there but at the limit of my nerves; it felt really exposed and I wasn't sure what was above that crack so didn't want to take a chance.

That's deffo a highball boulder... 🤣 Though generally the V is capitalised for bouldering grades. Might not sound like it matters but with Font grading and French sport grades an f being capitalised or not could denote the listing in the guide is either a bolted sport route or a boulder. So it's worth bearing in mind. I'm going to assume you're not sure what is meant by Grades in scrambling terms. Scrambling, sport climbing, trad climbing and bouldering have different grading systems in the UK. Scrambling is generally graded from 1-3 with either a plus, minus or an S to denote particularly risky or technical route etc. You could consider a grade 3 scramble to be equivalent to a diff or possibly a grade 3-4 in sport grade terms. But often with the added consideration of position of the route. Hope this helps clear up your confusion 😁

🤣 I'm very flattered you would prefer to listen to my heavy breathing (and wind clipping a microphone) for 10 minutes! 😉 I hear plenty of Brits playing music on Bluetooth speakers these days unfortunately too. On a more serious note. The music on these seems to be a polarising feature. Some people comment that it's great, some people like yourself make "clever" comments about how they dislike it. If there is a particularly nice natural sound then I'll leave it (idwal slabs with the water running down the gully). But funny enough, up in the fairly barren spots like this there are no songbirds or angelic choirs to create a wonderful natural soundtrack. What I may do is pop up two videos in future. One with and one without. See which is most popular in terms of views 😁

Feels more like wall climbing with the option of bridge moves instead of the craggy spikes and chimney on cneifion. Super holds though. And if you took a handful of big wires you could protect it very easily. Exposure makes it feel pretty serious but just because you start quite high up. Ace route. I can deffo recommend it! If in doubt take a 20m (or more) rope and some simple runners. Big nuts more useful than slings on that section.

I'd say this is less technical, climbing wise than CA but with a little more care needed with loose bits. Dolmen feels very exposed but oddly also hemmed in because of the surroundings. This is less technical than both but with a more "open to the sky" sort of position if you know what I mean 🤔 a different sort of exposure. The little pinnacles can be avoided on the sides though and the difficulties are contained in the upper section.

Great video. Although not a climber I have been across the Milestone on the Grade 3 scramble in the Ashton book, seconding a guide. We then did the continuation scramble to the North Ridge. I’m guessing this is the same-ish route? I didn’t think it was really a scramble either because it needed that climbers route-finding on a big face and some memory of the moves described in the book, which go totally out of my head. No matter, I was on the end of a tight rope, whereas your video is something else altogether. Great stuff. 👍
@Astilath2 жыл бұрын
This is the Vdiff route. The scramble takes a zigzag to find the easiest terrain between the traditional rock climbing routes. I know what you mean with the route finding! Once you know the line its logical but otherwise it seems like a real wandering odd path to take. This doesn't share any of the scrambling route but crosses over the scramble at belays. Particularly the big grassy bay up top before the chimney. The scramble takes a much more straightforward (but very spikey) groove to the right of the 3rd pitch chimney. It's a lovely scramble though! I like to start heather terrace routes with that and then traverse across the shoulder to the start of the terrace. Great fun! This is definitely not scrambling. It goes a fair way beyond what you find on even 3S scrambles. That said, with very minimal gear and a rope, up this and down the gulley makes for a great afternoons easy rock climbing 😁
