I'm from the N.E. of Scotland. Family have been here for as long as we know. People don't realise that we don't consider the S.W. to be the same peoples. We can still tell if someone is from here or there before they open their mouth. One of the most peaceful amalgamation of different peoples in history and we're proud of it. We're a (all) Jock Thamson's (Thomson's) bairns. Good video bud

The Picts were the northern Britons who the Romans never invaded. They basically spoke the same language as the Britons of England and Wales, albeit without the Roman/Latin influence. So they were still basically Celtic speaking. The Epidii were are Pictish tribe who lived in what is now Argyle. Due to their geographical isolation from the rest of the Picts they found it easy to trade and interact with the Irish across the narrow sea. So they adopted the Irish language (Gaelic) and became kinown as Scots. The Scoti or Scots was the name that the Romans gave to Gaelic speakers. These Scots established a kingdom called Dalriada which extended into Ireland. There was no Irish invasions of Pictland, but the Scottish king and aristocracy inherited Pictland after the Danish Vikings killed the Pictish king and his nobles. Prior to the Viking raids there had been much intermarriage between members of Scoti and Pictish kings and nobles. The Picts eventually became Scots after adopting the Gaelic language. The Picts were first introduced to the language after the Irish converted them to Christianity.

This shows how AI fails in so many ways. This seems to have been created by a badly informed human using AI creating the imagery. Anyway the Picts and the Scots were not same at all. Which is not made clear to later. The imagery in the first few minutes seems to show Scottish highlanders from around 16th century onwards, representing Picts.. Which is about 700 years after the Picts disappeared. Nobody knows how Pictish societies worked. There is hardly any evidence. But the narrator seems to assume they were the same as later Scottish Gaelic clan societies.

I think you exaggerated the horrors of Norse slavery a good bit. Like yeah, thralls were treated pretty horribly, but their existence wasn't hopeless like you're making it out to be. There were examples of male and female slaves who achieved an almost comfortable status through their own prestige and exceptionalism.

It would seem like the best way to make something of oneself as a thrall would be to have a valuable skill. I could see an enslaved blacksmith from Frankia or an educated thrall from Al-Andalus obtaining something like comfort. But a common thrall who just did hard labor round the house? How does one become the most prestigious sheep shearer or laundress?
@fwwaller
@fwwaller Ай бұрын
@@yvettethomas3700 prove you can do more than that? Meritocracy is a pretty common thing in even the most cruel and base of human culture, even the most horrible of slave owners would be dumbasses to not recognize an opportunity if a certain slave proved to be gifted in some way

Ireland used to be called Scotia, but the Scots never came from there. They were already living in Argyle and were the Epidii tribe of Picts, but they adopted the Irish language, i.e. Gaelic inorder to trade and communicate with the Irish and thus becomming Scots. BTW due to its geographical location the people of Argyle found it hard to interact and communicated with people in other parts of Ireland. Hence thee reason why the intercated more with the Irish

Not all families forgot the old, self-sustaining ways or their family history. We got a real kick out of my sister doing her 23 And Me and ffinding out we had traces of Irish Scotts, ancient Germanic and Stepp folk, Scandinavians and a smidge of North African that link back to family stories of how we came along to be. The Moorish trader that came to sell and didn't go home, the Dane that came aviking and was taken prisoner by an ancesstress (ahem!) but got packed off after a few babies for drunkenness and a refusal to work the farm, the Irish princess being the reason for our strong matrilinial family tradition... that made it all seem a little more real.

@AI_Imagines_History there's always a debate about how accurate it is but for folk that just don't know, I think it's worthwhile. They go on sale periodically, so that makes it doable. For us, we knew we were several variants of Scottish, a smidge of the Scandi, Welsh, Viking, Irish, and one lone Moore. It was fun to find out it wasn't just Grandpa William"s bedtime stories. The thing that hit for me was that the family wealth, heirlooms and treasures have always passed to the elder daughters... so hello Pictish? Idk, but it's fun to think about.

Not all Saxons are Nazi pure race invaders as most Saxon's of Saxony and England opposed the Nazi's loved Saxon wars that they became allied to the French defenders of the first victim of the Saxon wars known as Dutch of Deventer that would later save their Jewish allies from the Nazi's that made fake grave stones to shame the French heroes of Charlemagne for killing the Saxons that they did not kill but exiled as they opposed the executioner ritual of those few Nazi Saxons that live to tell lies called history, I found the christian jews of France were already allied to the Norse long before the Saxon wars even started against the Dutch of Deventer that became defended by the French that defeated the Nazi Saxon that fled to Denmark and forced the Norse to flee to the safety of France where the Norse could recover and help save the Jews from the Nazi Saxon that forced the Norse to flee from Denmark. In the end it looks like all peaceful Saxon allies of the French defenders of the Dutch of Deventer were allied to the Norse who were forced out of Denmark by just a few Saxon Nazi's that opposed the peaceful empire of Charlemagnes French and Saxon and Norse and Dutch alliance.

Anglo Saxons ( Angles, Saxon, Jutes ) came from the same land that most Viking came from. That would be Denmark. Just 400 years of separation. The migration was so large it almost left Denmark depopulated. Those left behind were called just Northmen. When both met they could understand each other verbally. Also shared the same pagan religion worshipping Oden, Thor.... before the Anglo Saxons became Christians.

I love that you specified how wives were forced into their roles and forced to work like slaves. Makes me know that your info is more reliable cause it its less likely to be tainted with sexism like a lot of history is. However, viking women were never "housewives". House wives didn't exist until the 1950s and were considered a "status symbol" because women were "trophy wives" and treated as objects. Anytime before that, women were doing exactly what their husband's were doing, probably on top of all of the house chores and child raising. So if the husband's were farmers, so were the women. Also, to call a housewife "idle" completely negates all of the Hardworking is involved with taking care of an entire household (laundry, dusting, cleaning, cooking, raising children 24/7 ON TOP of farming). If thats not work, do it yourself then 😂😂 although I will say "free" is a perfect way to describe an unmarried woman of this time
