@@DCSilverAgeStorytime yeah I know what you mean. And it has nothing to do with being "woke" or anything. For me at least, the stories just aren't as good. I'm all for diversity and stuff and I think it's lazy to say that comic book sales have dropped the way they have because they've gone woke. They just need to find good writers who have interesting stories to tell, that's it.

I'd say the unfortunate problem is that comics are seen as archaic and people might be right. It's really hard to compete with other forms of entertainment like video games where you get a massive bang for you buck. And I have to confess that reading the same characters for 40+ years gets very repetitive yet I also tend to only buy comics with characters I recognize so I can't fault the companies. I think that DC should just stop making comics, reduce the volume of material they put out and focus on book length stories. There is so much trash to sift through to get to the good stuff that new fans probably get turned off immediately.

I think Tom King is a mixed bag. @@DCSilverAgeStorytime I agree but I also think that applies to every writer. I love Alan Moore as well but he's had some bad runs as well. I haven't read Heroes in Crisis because I have heard that it's really bad but I think when he hits, it's usually great.

If I were to rank my top 10 favorite comic stories of all time, Alan Moore would probably have 7 or 8 of them. I'd say that I never read anything by Alan Moore less than good. The man could do superheroes, horror, humor, pretty much everything. I remember not getting into Promethea and I felt that the quality of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was very uneven but overall he is easily my favorite comic book writer bar none. The one I really think about is Grant Morrison who could create some of the best stories in the history of comics and some of the absolute worst. I'd say his hits far outweighed his misses but sometimes his stories were painful to read. Mark Waid is another writer who had a few legendary stories but overall I think his writing is average. It does seem like Tom King may be expanding away from DC currently.

I just found that The Spectre struggled quite a bit against just about any non-normal opponent and was constantly getting assistance. He was shown to be straight up weaker than Zor. Of course Jerry Siegel and Gardner Fox are simply different writers and Fox may not have had an issue with his character beating down every opponent in sight and he did have only 6 pages to work with rather than the 10 that Siegel had so maybe he didn't feel there was enough time to have Fate struggle. There are lots of channels doing these comparisons but at the end of the day the winner will be whoever the writer wants to win. I hadn't really thought of anything for my 100th sub. One thing I am planning on doing in the very near future is a battle between The Spectre and Dr Fate and who would win. The obvious answer is The Spectre in an easy victory but if we limit them to the Golden Age and take away The Spectre's Ring of Life I'm not sure he'd win. This would be prior to both of them essentially becoming joke characters. I only have one more Spectre story to finish (but a bunch left to publish) and I'm about to do the final Fate story before his helmet was truncate and he became ridiculous.

I think my favorite golden age character is the Specter but Dr Fate is up there. I know the golden age stories aren't as silly as the silver age but, in my opinion, a lot of them are just as crazy in their own special way. There's something interesting about how they just tried anything they could think of and nothing was off limits. Don't get me wrong, I love the silver age as well, I think I like each of them equally. Can't wait until your next video.

I have The Specter also and I can start going back and forth between the characters. The problem with Dr Fate is that after about a third of the way in Gardner Fox completely changed the character and made him awful so we have that to look forward to.

So did Sir Sedgwick have the exact same suit, hat and pipe in the bag or did he undress there on the street to give the clothes he was wearing to Superman? I just had a thought that this guy has a closet full of this exact same outfit with the hat and pipe as well and wears a different one every day. I don't know why that's so amusing to me.
@DCSilverAgeStorytime
@DCSilverAgeStorytime Ай бұрын
I hadn't thought of that. He actually gave Superman his entire suitcase so I assume he had the exact same suit including cap, monocle and pipe insude. I found it amusing that Superman felt compelled to wear the entire ensemble. What I didn't mention was that Superman presented himself as a doorman despite being in his full Superman suit. Such is the insanity of the Silver Age.

Hey maybe at the end of the video you could give a rundown on what you thought of the story or something. That might add to that feeling you're going for. I don't know if that's a good idea or not, just something I thought of.

It's a fine idea. The only thing I'd say is that I really want to try to keep my videos at or under 10 minutes so I do limit my analysis. From my experience people's attention span is quite short these days and I have to keep things moving fast. I am considering trying to make some 30 second shorts on single crazy elements from a story. I've never done shorts but they are super popular.

I have done two Golden Age Dr Fate stories but I wont publish them until I get about 10 and then I'll start doing one a day. I'd also like to do the Golden Age Specter. Those were some trippy stories. The ones that were the most boring to me are actually Superman and Batman.

@@DCSilverAgeStorytime Dr. Fate and the Specter are great ones to start with. Personally I also like some of the more obscure heroes from that time period. The stories are insane but in a different way than the silver age was insane. I will continue to focus on the Silver Age and I can only talk about stuff I actually have. I have Specter, Shazam, Justice Society etc but nothing really obscure. It's all either archive editions or omnibus. I do have Plastic Man, which is fun. Eventually I'd like to do Doom Patrol, which was a brilliant Silver Age series.

It could be interesting. I actually have WAY more Golden Age stuff than Silver Age although I have enough Silver Age to probably last me years. The Golden Age would be more of a challenge because it just isn't nearly as fun and silly. I have mostly Superman and Batman Omnibus but I also have other stuff like Dr Fate and Justice Society that might be more fun to look at. I might give Dr Fate a try soon as a change of pace.
