You got insanely lucky taking down both of those SEAD F-16s with Kubs of all things, if the opposite had happened you would have been in a lot of trouble, and most of the time that's how it would have gone. Radar AA is highly visible from the air & vulnerable to SEAD, bringing it out in the opener like that is very risky, manpads are the key to beating this kind of strategy because they're able to hide from his recon helo. IMO the 'standard' opener most players currently do is actually super greedy and unsafe and that's why it usually folds so hard to plane or helo or tank rushes or literally any other form of early pressure. Bringing a lot of unstealthy, non-forward-deployed stuff in the opener, with no plane with decent air optics to spot enemy air units coming in, is just begging to get punished like this.

I think what you're saying makes some sense but the problem is that it depends on your opponent doing that air opener. If your opponent does a very heavy land opener while you're invested in an anti-air opener, won't your opponent just be able to roll over you on the ground?

@@SportBrotha I'm not saying to overinvest in AA, I was arguing against taking radar AA at all and using manpads instead which are much cheaper. What I think is you have two safe options: first, open with only units that are hard to spot and/or get into position quickly - recon, manpads, ATGM vehicles, anything with a stealth rating better than "Bad," which also includes a lot of infantry transport jeeps. No expensive, slow, non-stealthy, non-forward-deployed units that a recon helo can spot from halfway across the map. Opening with a tank CV in particular is just about the most unsafe thing you can do. Or second, you can open with a plane, preferably with Exceptional optics, that can see an incoming plane train quickly enough to allow your units to get off the road before they get hit. You have to either be hard to see or be able to see it coming, otherwise you are leaving yourself open to get suckerpunched by aircraft. With 7th, your only Exceptional air optics are on your SEAD plane which you probably don't really want to take, you could maybe open with two of your cheap ASFs, but I think going for the stealth approach is probably better, I'd bring out all 4 Spezialaufklarers, either the recon BRDM or aufklarers in KPV jeeps, Konkurs BRDMs, lots of Iglas, BRDM CVs. Still totally functional against an all-ground opener, much harder to see and kill with an A-10 rush, with nothing that's expensive enough to be worth trading a plane for.

@@SportBrothaany defensive opener means trading ground in exchange for time to build up. Its only an issue if your deck cant push. Imo the 'stealthy' approach is garbo bc your stuff will get spotted anyway by approaching units and then smashed by A10/cobra. You simply have to overinvest in aa relative to the rest of your opener. If youre not playing a 'vanguard' div it will equalize with time. Its not like aa is useless, even if it only prevents the opponent from investing in air, that's value.

I mean, that's the main strength of reservist divisions, once they've got some cheap squad in every building in a zone, it's really hard to dig them out. 101st should be trying to prevent them from doing that by dropping squads behind their lines and ambushing them on the road into the zone, IMO. Most of their units are in unarmored trucks, they can't drive into infantry AT or Dragons, and if you make them unload miles behind the zone, they'll probably just never get to the front. I think you skipped most, maybe even all of the ground-based fire support units you could be taking? There's the M2 Mule transport on the Stinger, the M40 Mule & M67 MPs, MG teams, the long range sniper rifle and choice of Humvee you get with either Snipers or Delta Force. The towed Vulcan technically can also shoot beyond small arms range but I don't think you took that either, if I'm not mistaken the only thing you have on the ground that does direct HE damage past 850m is the M1IP. And you probably don't want to use those for anti-infantry close fire support. Mortars could also help and I think 101st should rely heavily on them, but I think you're firing your mortars from way too far away, they need to be a lot closer than you'd expect for them to work properly, close to their minimum range (1200m!) or they just won't hit anything. They have roughly the same max dispersion as heavier artillery, but it scales up over a much shorter range and the blast radius of a mortar shell is pretty small, so their practical range is much lower than the max on their unit card, especially if you're firing without corrected shot. High dispersion is good if you're smoking but not if you want to do fire support.

A lot of those artillery shots were suspicious but your opponent did get his recon SF pretty far forward through your lines, he could have been seeing a lot. You have to finish changing altitude with your helos before his fighters come in if you want to keep them from being targeted, they probably would have to stop pretty far back. I've been learning recently, staying at low altitude behind cover is critical for keeping helos alive if you want to use them anywhere near the front. If you don't have a plane with decent air optics circling behind your line (in 101st, only the F-15 really qualifies, unless you want to use the Raven), you might want to keep all your helos low or landed, and only bring them up when you at least can get some warning of a plane coming in. Try to hide behind cover and wait until an enemy tank enters your ATGM range, pop up, launch, and then either go back down or fly to the rear behind your AA to resupply before their plane can get to you. Your helos should stay stationary at high altitude for as short a time as possible, IMO ignoring the change altitude button is one of the biggest mistakes players are currently making while using them.

Did you check the replay to see how he saw your apaches in the back on the ground? That felt wrong, I play a lot of Apache's and have never seen that happen, he is either very lucky, had a recon in an amazing spot or was cheating mid game.

if youre firing at a enemy in a corrected shot zone and the target starts to move, does your artillery follow the target or just salo the initial area as if youre firing POS? maintaining that target stays spotted of course
