if you play dead, why would he leave you instead of just having a free meal? when the bear charges you, what has caused you to keep walking back instead of making noise/charging him? you cant know if he is all out or bluffing

Great video with great info. Unfortunately, as you can see from the comments, it's lost on about half the people because they think they know better. About half the people in the world are nitwits and/or ruled by fear.

I live in a quiet small Australian town. Next May i am coming to see Alaska for a good 2 weeks. On youtube i heard a man say, i won't go on the gold belt tram in Juneau as it is so uneventful. I don't understand people as each scene with amazing mountains is so special and i just can't wait for it to be nxt year already. Although my mum is limited in mobility (no excessive hikes unfortunalely), i deceided to add 4 days in banff to our trip. I am so looking forward to seeing everything in person. It has been my dream for over 20 years. I hope my mum finds it as awe inspiring as i will. And incase people think it is to expensive , in May we are paying under $1000pp for flight , hotel, guided tour one day of all the lakes. Shuttle from and to calgary and the banff hot springs for $20 .

I hate the idea of a massive demon that can one tap me wandering around the forest. Reason I refuse to go hiking in grizzly territory. No bear spray propaganda can tell me othee wise. I need an anti material rifle.

@InsidersTravelGuideCanada Ай бұрын
Oh no. Bears, or any wild animal, are not demons. On the contrary, they are our friends. They respect our space as we respect theirs. You are more likely to get into a bar fight, or experience road rage from another person than you are to ever have a negative encounter with a bear in our glorious Canadian Rockies. Don't be scared, be prepared.

I'd say you can experience most of these things when you come out. It's cooler, not colder and after all, it's the West Coast. Just be prepared for more rain so bring good rain shells and layers.

Bear attacks are sooo rare," yet he tells the story of a bear charging at him three times in one event. Honestly, I think I’d just crap my pants and then die of a heart attack!

But remember, I was in the backcountry for at least 10 years before this happened. I spent more time in the wilderness, trying to encounters bears than most people could ever imagine. So, in the defense of the bears, it's quite rare indeed that you could have a negative encounter.

Thanks for"validating" my habbit of always assuming there is a bear in those bushes and talking to that (imaginary) bear. Only met one black bear who seemed in a hurry to cross the trail right in front of me. He was not heading for me, just running towards the lake to check a group of geese (it seems). Beautifull bear. I always carry grizzly grade 40 feet bear spray and an air horn (130 db). I hike alone all spring + summer. Never used those in last 4 years. NEVER SURPRISE A BEAR.... or me!😂

I had a Sitka bear rush me while field dressing an elk (wasn’t a bluff). I’ll let you guess where I was. I didn’t think a bear would start a full-on rush from over 100 meters away. This one did. So, I had about 5 seconds until impact. Would you recommend waiting for it to get closer and deploy bear spray? Start shooting immediately? I made the decision to deploy my first can of bear spray, in a huge wall in front of me, while moving backwards quickly. By the time it was empty, my super redhawk was out and I shot the bear. The spray dissipated too much and it was still moving forward. I had to empty the entire cylinder. I had zero chance to reload. It stopped about 15 feet away after the sixth round, then lunged forward two more steps and dropped. The game warden didn’t have much to say. Never got feedback. I don’t know if I made the correct call, but that’s the call I made and I own it. Oh, I always carry a bear tag with me now. I didn’t have one then. I had to decapitate the bear and pack the head and part of the cervical spine out. Not cool. The elk didn’t make it, to say the least.

Well, hunting and having an easy meal in front of an opportunist bear is a totally different story. But this is a Canadian National Park, and a) We aren't allowed to hunt anything (so a dressed and bloody deer won't be an attractant) and b) We aren't allowed to have firearms which is the basis of my advice in this video. But for a fact, I'm glad you walked away and hopefully got to put that deer in your freezer. :)

You can’t drive through Sooke to go to Tofino, you have to go back to the main highway eventually, and even if you could it would take way longer than the highway so most people probably wouldn’t bother

Just got back from Calgary. I’m from Ontario and those mountains are magical. I’ve never seen mountains before and this experience has changed my view of our beautiful country. The only animal we witnessed in front of us was a ram and his baby. They were eating something on the road. This was on our way back to Calgary from Kananaskis

I'm glad you were able to see this. If they were on the side of the road they were probably licking salt. Or eating fresh spring grass. I am sort of like you. I went to Banff from Ontario when I was 20 for a "summer job" and ended up staying for over 22 years. Banff and Jasper can do that to you.

I guess they didn’t have a map that included any of the communities that make up the Comox Valley. 2 minutes and 43 seconds dedicated to Craigdarroch Castle and Beacon Hill Park in VIctoria and very little Up Island and nothing on the Comox Valley. Clearly the “production team” doesn’t get north of the Malahat much. Overall a really shoddy “Ultimate Insider’s Guide” of Vancouver Island.
