Also attended the big national conferences at Ft. Slocum (New Rochell), NY and at Farely Dickenson University in Madison, NJ. Sang with Sing Out Panama, Japan, and others. I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything. I just wish I still had photos/video from those days to look back on. I have GOT to order this DVD.

As a past member of Sing Out Baltimore, this brings back many memories. although we had Moral Rearmnament literature at our shows, the music and the message in the music is what it was all about for me. We did 2 or 3 TV shows at WMAR TV and one for WJZ TV between 67 and 70 and I have never been able to get a response from them about archival footage. UWP kept me out of trouble during my teens. We partied with Sing Out Japan.

I never knew UWP as a "cult." I was a member of Sing Out Baltimore for roughly four years 67 t o 70 maybe. Some of the best years of my life. I never sat down and studied the Moral Rearmnament book by Peter Howard. As Rhythm and Lead guitarist, my time was pretty busy learning all of the new material that was coming out of "UWP National." That didn't leave me much time to get into trouble, so, in that respect, I'm thankful.

I had to "dislike" this vid but it was a reluctant choice: I don't dislike what's depicted, nor Up With People, just the fact that this video clip flung encapsulations and conclusions at the viewer without backing up anything or providing contextual justification for any of those conclusions. That the various allegations presented don't even add up or resolve only makes it harder to endorse.

There are "cultish aspects" to every organization...church, place of employment, family...why is it such a big revelation that UWP was cultish...so what!? Who denies it? Was it David Koresh-ish, cult-material...no...I was there....at least not in the late 80's. Where's the rest of the documentary?

We were excited to see Up with People featured in the Rose Parade in 2008, because my wife and I were involved with the Up with People cast of Sing Out St.Petersburg in St. Petersburg, Florida while I was stationed at MacDill AFB from 1965 - 1968. After all these years we still remember the lyrics of the Up with People songs and they are as timely now as they were then.

@Narnhart to say that UWP supported the Vietnam war because we supported soldiers is like saying a person supports illegal immigration because he likes Mexican food: it just doesn't connect.

I also just returend from a semester of Up with People (Cast A 2010) and I got to learn about the history of our organization we've never shown support of any war we've only shown support for the people affected by it. When my cast did a show in Fort Carson there was alot of us that felt kind of sketchy because we thought this would mean support for the current conflict in the mideast but we then remembered what we were there for: to support the families affected by war

I just got back from a semester of Up with People and I saw absolutly nothing of the cult behaviour this film talks about. If anything they encouraged us to think on our own and one thing of this film is the line about "if you control someone with sex or money you've got them" I saw nothing in my semester about any kind of forced or even encouraged sexual activity (actually sexual activity with your castmates is forbidden) This movie is not about the real Up with People

Neill-- The film interviews not only 'disgruntled uppies', but many of the people who built it. Easily-obtained records show that corporations with military contracts, such as Halliburton and Serle contributed vast sums of cash to fund performance tours in parts of the world growing more jaundiced towards our country's foreign policy. It is accurate as far as it goes.

from anywhere else to promote or assist the up with people organization. Up with people was a fine organization and group of young people doing fine things for themselves their communities and the country. . I was a member of 2 local groups for 3 years and it was very different from how it is being portrayed in theis socalled documentary video

I see a lot of negative comments about the trailer. But after viewing the documentary at the Florida Film Festival and listening to the Director being interviewed my take away is this: The director had a personal connection via her husband that was a cast member. He refused to be interviewed by his wife and asked her to find out what it was about on her own. So she did and uncovered the truth that spanned back to post WWII. It was a well balanced piece for a "Outsider Artist/Director".

It says alot about the caliber, scope and objectivity of the film producers that they would edit in footage of a guy making a poor word choice like 'fairy' to illustrate their point.

I'm excited to see this movie! I worked on three sides of UWP: student, staff, and sponsor, and the experience was as astounding as the opportunities it has opened to me since. It will be great if the movie achieves a well rounded perspective on the history of this organization ("let others decide" as L2PSandK says). The edits in the preview seem to cast a post-9/11 cynical revision on some of what was happening, but hopefully the full film will flesh things out!

I traveled in Cast C 94 and likening UWP to a cult is right on the money. Not everyone was satisfied to simply accept whatever was being fed to us UWP-style and understand that even given the most positive, idealogical appearance, there are still things that run counter. UWP was great for some and not others, and I applaud anyone who is willing to peel the onion and let others decide for themselves.

By what crazy leap of logic does this guy come to the conclusion that we were supportive of the Viet Nam war? I think he has a geranium in his cranium. He's poco loco in the coco. We probalby did as much to shorten that war, and to prevent or shorten other wars as any other group, and more than many of them. Neill Arnhart Proud cast member of Up With People 1975-1976.

Cult???? Who is this guy? "They don't audition for talent, and if you've ever seen a show, you would know that." What an idiot. "Pro War." What kind of sick, sad person would make a statement like that about UWP? Someone who doesn't like themself very much, I guess. Then we have the guy who describes gay people as "fairies. Which branch of the Klan is he from? Neill Arnhart
@NeillArnhart16 жыл бұрын
Hey, PJ. I assume that people were watching and enjoying them. You're a judgemental doofus. No one denied you the right to listen to stoner music. Why do you have a problem with people listening to uplifting music. The film that this came from is one sided. The film maker ran into a few disgruntled uppies, and ran with it. This film is not accurate. Neill Arnhart
@NeillArnhart16 жыл бұрын
What's your point? Companies always sponsor groups and organizations in order to gain exposure. Does STP love Richard Petty? I don't know. Maybe. But it doesn't matter. They sponsored him in order to make money. Sure, UWP has flaws. So does the Morman Tabernacle Choir. What of it? We did a lot of good, and are still doing good things in the world. Anyone watching this film should be advised that it is one sided. Neill Arnhart

Who is this guy? I was in UWP in 1975-76. Being gay was not a problem in either the management or the rank and file. Besides, we should just give a guy who uses the word "fairy" to describe gay people the same amount of credibility as a klansman who uses the word "ni--er" to describe a black person. This film looks to be a hatchet job by someone with an agenda. Neill Arnhart

The whole closet case thing kind of pisses me off! I am an A06 kid and I don't feel like being openly gay was taboo. I guess it's a generational thing but UwP has definitely changed since the 70s 80s and 90s. I think now UwP really is open to diversity and not just saying they are. This documentary seems very biased so far.
