Past mid-night, as I stare at the firelight in in my sheiling all alone How I hate to spend the eventide on my own Autumn wind bloweth outside my window as I look upon the room And it maketh me so sick to see the gloom With not a soul out there No one can hear my prayer Give me, give me, give me A man/maid after midnight Will nobody help me Chase the shadows away Give me, give me, give me A man/maid after midnight Take me through the darkness To the break of the day Noble-born set at high keep at castle with that fine costly wear ‘Tis so different to the lot that I must bear When with musing, I stand in the doorway and I gaze into the night Yet I see naught there, no one enters my sight With not a soul out there No one can hear my prayer Give me, give me, give me A man/maid after midnight Will nobody help me Chase the shadows away Give me, give me, give me A man/maid after midnight Take me through the darkness To the break of the day Give me, give me, give me A man/maid after midnight Will nobody help me Keep the shadows at bay?

Hi. Do you mean the guitar tabs for the chords? I arranged it by ear from listening to the original song. I could probably work out what the chord sequences are, but I don't have them immediately to hand.

It is a Swiss folk song (not a French one) around 1740. In the original text in the Bernese dialect, it is a tragic love story that took place in the small Bernese community of Guggisberg. That’s why it’s also called Guggisberglied.
@Timmakesmusic4 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment giving more background to this song, and sorry it's taken me a while to reply. I've looked into this a bit more but there's no mention of the Swiss origin of this song in the Britten folksongs edition I have - it's simply in the 'France' section with no further information. I can't find any further information about the Britten arrangement anywhere online either. It's definitely the same melody and very similar lyrics to the Guggisberg song as you quite rightly pointed out. I don't know whether Britten mistakenly thought the song was from France or whether he considered it to be a different French version of the original Swiss song. In any case, I've updated the song description to reflect the song's Swiss origins. Thanks for pointing this out to me! :-)

Positively stunning. I can hear the strain on a few of the soprano notes, but the fact it's only at the highest point you start to get a little uncomfortable shows just how wide your range really is. And even *then* I feel like most would only notice if they were looking for it. The whole piece blends wonderfully 💜
@Timmakesmusic8 ай бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. The soprano part goes up to a top G which is about as high as I can go in falsetto. Some days I can reach it without a sweat and other times, if my voice isn't quite in the right place, it's a bit of a stretch. Glad I don't have to sing up there too often! 😆

@Timmakesmusic Жыл бұрын
@@Minisoderr the smaller descant one is relatively good quality, although not top of the range by any means. The larger tenor one is an old wooden one I found in a charity/thrift shop. It's of a kind used by schoolchildren back in the day, so it probably was played by elementary kids at some point!

Using y instead of þ in Gothic script is a rookie mistake.
@Timmakesmusic Жыл бұрын
You can blame the adoption of the moveable-type printing press for that. Thorns (þ) haven't been a thing in printed English text since the 1450s. 😆

The opening is plainchant style. If you search for 'plainchant' or 'plainsong' you'll find examples like this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXyYcqKeeLKLZrc The main part of the song is more like a regular folk medieval song or ballad. You can find lots of examples online but here's a video with a selection: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hH-plHh9hddga80 and another one here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poWVk6JmaNShi7s
