Regarding experience: I deliberately made advancement slow because it's always easier to give a little more to the players than it is to give less. Several parts of the game are designed that way, actually.

All three of J.D. Neal's adventure books are definitely homages; they resemble the originals, but definitely go their own way rather than just copying the old stuff.

I think the seords against series was all compilations of previously written stories, and that the first one featuring fafhr and the grey mouser was "two sought adventure". Before that it was all in magazines. The first one he wrote was adepts gambit in 1936 and published in 1947, which is hell of a lot earlier than swords against deviltry, in 1970.
@TheBasicBrit19894 ай бұрын
You are of course absolutely correct and my little bonus fact is worded incorrectly! It was the first time they appeared in the compilation/novel style akin to some of the earlier Conan stories before they where collated. You have out nerded me however and I must now hunt you and your entire bloodline down. Joking of course thanks for the insights!

Very interesting list! Thanks for sharing! I've had great times with D&D from BECMI and 2nd ed through to 5e and then on to OSR. Love the attention given to BFRPG here! My absolute (and the latest) favorite is Dolmenwood!! If you're not familar, you should get into it if possible. To me it's old school D&D perfected. All the aspects of it fine tuned so well and best served with the Dolmenwood setting in just that flavor you mention regarding the Blackapple Bruge. It's on pre-order now since last Autumn's kickstarter. As old school yet new adventures go I recommend Incandescent Grottoes by Gavin Norman (creator of Dolmenwood) and for me a new acquaintance, Castle Xyntillan (a megadungeon).

Reavers of harkenwold? Also 100% thought you’d say lost mines of P. Glad you didn’t though? Nice list; love the spread of different editions. Would to see your top 10 updated after you play more BECMI. Totally feel you on the sentiment behind things like cairn of the winter king. Great video, great discussion
@TheBasicBrit19895 ай бұрын
So... the only reason Reavers isn't up there is my original group (with family and friends) fell apart before we could play it. We got new jobs, moved all over the place and had kids, so we never got to run through it, even though I have read it multiple times. On the BECMI point I can already feel myself shifting to some old classics and have famous locations seeded into my campaign world. Thanks for the comment mate!

I keep hearing that Blackapple Brugh is so good but I've read it and I just don't get it. Something in this module must not be clicking with me. I'll have to play it in order to see it's greatness.
@TheBasicBrit19895 ай бұрын
Mate everyone has their own opinion on things and like you most of the time I have to play something for it to resonate or click. There's just something creepy and very English about it, my nan used to tell us stories and would piss her self laughing at how scared we got. That's the vibe I got from it and why I like it, definitely a subjective viewpoint

@@paavohirn3728 the system is a tactics game, and if that is people's jam more power to them. For all the bad people say about it I had fun and my players did too so that's why I still mine it for inspiration but maybe not rules
@paavohirn37285 ай бұрын
@@TheBasicBrit1989 Yeah. We played a decent amount with it before moving to Pathfinder and other systems. I liked the balance of it. In 3e you could create a really cool character that just didn't work in the game so 4e improved upon that. But I'm afraid I didn't really delve into the adventure materials.

If you let them tame a wild beast through magic it will wear off. If it was just a nice roll of the dice then umm have it go into heat and wreak havoc among the npcs causing any number of resource problems.

Gonzo can add a bit of magic and chaos to a classic setting. The unknown is a source of mystery. I believe that not all things need an explanation. As long as wackiness doesn't become a constant, it shouldn't be a problem.
