This must have been one of S.O.'s very last races. He was a good XC runner. In 1978 he finished something like 4th or 5th in the National over 9 miles and set a British 800m record in Prague. That's never been replicated by a Brit.

I have written elsewhere, and I repeat it here, that Warren did Ovett a massive favour by taking off on the early part of the penultimate bend. Coe would have had to run the bend in Lane 3 to get round the crowd in front of him at that point. Understandably Coe left it to the start of the back straight to move through the field, but by then it was too late. Ovett deserved it, he didn't have an easy race, and he ran like Hercules, reacting to situations as they arose. Coe ran with a plan, and he ran like Pegasus, but the plan was sunk by its own inflexibility, a bit like the Schlieffen plan 66 years earlier. This was the great race of the modern era. I must have watched it 25 times.

There is a story in ovett book ,that ovett looked over at the British team, and he said the only two British athletes who was clapping him was Geoff capes and David Jenkins,it's funny that straiub only ever beat overt in this race.

Cram was a brilliant athlete but unfortunately for him his time at the very top was comparatively short (1983- 1986). He got his best results when Coe or Ovett were injured. 2 of his best performances were beating Ovett in the 1983 1500 @ Crystal Palace & beating Aouita in Nice 1985. Right in-between those at the Olympic 1500 metre final in Los Angeles he took on a Coe who had already had his toxoplasmosis episode but was just too good for any runner on that day. His blistering pace down the final 100 was something else! Coe, Cram and Ovett had different strengths, but they were the main players in all a golden era for British middle distance athletics 👍

It's a shame for David that not many remember he was the third Brit in that 800m final. To get in the team was an achievement in itself and then in his semi final he beat amongst others two previous finalists (Grippo and Singh) and the European champion (Beyer) to qualify.

Straub ran an incredible race. Busse also ran well. As he did with Wagenknecht in the 800m. I was recently in touch with Busse who mentioned after YEARS of campaigning and requesting he finally got given access to the East German files which proved he did NOT take any drugs. Bearing in mind the suspicion around the DDR regime and proven cases elsewhere this is a valuable footnote to add to this race.

Cram's 1988 season had been going so well before the Rieti injury in late August. On the eve of the games he was upbeat about his chances but his early elimination of the 800 suggested he really should have considered dropping out of that event in preference to giving his all at the 1500. If he had done that then who knows what might have happened.

@@201081hero John Walker 1976 best thing thing that happened to him was being eliminated in the 800m first round we all know what happened after that slow final ran the last 300m in 39 seconds which is as fast as anyone ever especially in a Final & that’s why Van Damme couldn’t pass him he was behind him so would have to have run 38:5 for the last 300m almost impossible
