Just found and watched this video again. So this race was approx December 1990. Ovett's era was coming to an end and it was Peter Elliott's best season. And didn't it show here. Ovett was great too, taking the lead briefly and holding on for a very decent 3rd.

Just found this. Fantastic to see the other legends of the era Peter Elliott and Steve Crabb! Thanks for posting!

Thanks so much for posting this. Lovely to see Nick O'Brien in this. Ran with him in the Lancs team that won the Inter Counties XC in 1985. These really were the good old days.

Fantastic days, years before the Mo Farah show and they wonder why athletics isn't worth watching any more? No personalities; just a man who seems to think acting like a child entertains us all!

Makes me wonder why Peter Elliot didn't try 5000m. He was capable of 13 minutes judging by this and his 4 minutes 52.8 for 2000m
@playthatgeetar11 жыл бұрын
No - he was another class to me :) That team was me, Nick, John Nuttall and Chris Sweeney. Chris won the National the same year. 25 points and we equalled the Inter Counties record set by Yorkshire (including Steve Binns, and Carl Thackeray (I think)). I am living in Canada now, but that gold medal is still by my bed.
@cashcrop706 жыл бұрын
Chris Sweeney won the junior national in 1986, I think, by a huge margin. The Athletics' Weekly headline was 'Sweeney out on his Tod'. Used to train with him at St Helen's AC, but he was older and more talented than me.

Remember Steve Crabb only a second or two slower than the best he did alright Peter Elliot too never under-performed in my view was great role-model of determination.

After the Lord Major's Parade syndrome. If you actually know athletics you know a world class performer when you see one. Ovett was special but only one medal at world level at 1500m is a bit of a short change for me. Actually no better than Foster doing all the talking.

@J Cee Elliott had his best years 1989/90 1:42 800m, 3;32 1500m and won gold commonwealth's.

Hats off and balding head on display for posting this. Elliot was a grinder and grinders win the hard way. Shame there isn't a 3000m at championships because he might have got the gold he deserved.

Peter Elliot must have had incredible natural core strength to be able to compete at the highest level, running with in effect no arms.
@hanleyfender14 жыл бұрын
Christine Boxer hasn't got a clue on the commentry. I once tripped up Steve Crabb over 1500 in the Commonwealth trials in 89. I was in the same race with Rob denmark where we both ran sub 4 for the first time. I'll dig out some videos for KZbin. I've got loads.

6:22. Steve Grabb LOL! Peter Elliott was the kind of runner; no nonsense and should have won more than he did, but I suspect that even a God medal wouldn't have made his name remembered!

Good runner that he was, I wouldn't call Crabb a legend.

Just found this video again. Crabb was a two time Olympian 1988 and 1992. We haven't see any male British athletes achieve that in 24 years since.

Incorrect. John Mayock competed at three Olympic Games, at the 1996 games in Atlanta and the 2000 games in Sydney in the 1500 m and at the 2004 games in Athens. In 1988 Crabb was seriously inferior to Coe and shouldn't have gone to the Olympics.
@SirPeter64644 жыл бұрын
@@redrum4100 the biggest problem of athletics. Have to select on the here and now. Coe just couldn't be selected on sentiment. He often went missing when he couldn't win, so wouldn't have surprised me if he cried off before the games even if selected.
@redrum41004 жыл бұрын
@@SirPeter6464 I'd have rather gambled on Coe than enter someone who was never even going to make the final. That said, it was no surprise to me that Coe ran sub 1:44 a month before the games. He'd have been in shape.

Is there a reason they don't have a cross country race at the olympics? Ovett didn't fancy moving up to 5k because he found 25 laps or more boring, so perhaps many athletes find it more interesting than track racing. Would certainly prefer it to race walking
