After 595 days on Duolingo learning Portuguese, I am now writing my own paragraphs in English into Google Translate and then copying the English and Portuguese paragraphs into Excel. I like your idea of memorizing the sentences to build familiarity with the language. One of my concerns is that if I construct a sentence in Portuguese, the words may be correct but no one ever expresses the idea with those words. Google Translate helps me to be sure I'm using expressions the way a Brazilian speaker would say the sentence. I really like your video and the approach you have taken to reach your goal.

I think the hardest thing about Norwegian is understanding what Norwegians are saying to you once you get into a conversation. If you speak English it's actually a pretty easy language to learn but the problem is the chances are you are not going to be speaking to someone who is speaking the same language you've learned (if you live anywhere except Oslo). Most countries you go to people would try to avoid dialects when speaking to a foreigner but most Norwegians won't or just can't conceive of not using their dialect with anyone. You have to be almost fluent before you can even begin to use all the Norwegian you have learned and that is the problem with learning Norwegian. The 'entry level' is so ridiculously high.

My Norwegian friend also taught me about commas and ikke, that depending on where you put the comma the sentence can change meaning completely. Example that they use in elementary schools: "Häng ham, ikke vente pa mej" or "Häng ham ikke, vente pa mej" (means: hang him, don’t wait for me, or, don’t hang him, wait for me)

Hei Ilys ! :) Jeg er virkelig imponert over at du har lære deg norsk på så kort tid! :) Hadde jeg snakket med deg på gata i Oslo ville jeg trodd du var født og oppvokst her i landet! Jeg er 100% norsk og er veldig stol av landet mitt, jeg håper du gjør det samme. P.S. jeg har prøvd å lære meg fransk, men det har ikke gått så bra, foreløpig. Ønsker deg hell og lykke med alt du måtte finne! :) --Thor

English translation under my Norwegian comment. “Jeg er Norsk og bruker denne metoden for å lære meg Nederlandsk. Og det er veldig gøy. Jeg har sett denne videoen flere ganger, og hver gang jeg ser den introen så føler jeg meg veldig patriotisk” “I’m Norwegian and I’m using this method to learn Dutch. And it’s really fun. I’ve watched this video many times, and every time I see that into, I feel very patriotic”

I'm from Wales but I went to school in Norway for a year and a half. I probably reached a B2 level and honestly I was so shy, I struggled to speak in the language at all but like you said, just constantly listening and absorbing the language is so good for learning it. It would've been more ideal if I spoke more, practised more, wrote more, but at the end of the day through mainly just listening I still picked up on so much, it's crazy. And now I'm here because I'm going to folk highschool next year and I'm determined to reach fluency! (I'm a bit rusty, it's been three years since I was there)

Language insanity I just made myself sick looking at the wikipedia page for some Indian languages: Hindi, Mayalayam (yes, it's a palindrome), Tamil Obviously, no sane logical person would have EVER sat down and deliberately invented such languages, especially their writing, and myriad of illogical rules. The written symbols are absolutely unimaginable, unlearnable -- like trying to copy some FRACTCAL design twice the same way. I have no idea how humans evolved -- language evolution is akin to biological evolution: just solving problems that are "just good enough" but no overall plan to organize such thought. Think of human written and oral evolution as the absolutely WORST computer program the absolute WORST programmer ever wrote, and then exponentially make accelerate/increase the spaghetti code. Thank aliens (I say Thank Aliens, now - never Thank God) the next step in our human biological and technological evolution will be what aliens have: telepathy. Not ten trillion different languages with ten trillion different bleeps and blurps souinds and ten trillion different squiggles to say the same thing. Honestly, it was just depressing: no wonder humans cannot get along when there is THIS such ENORMOUS barrier to communications. It's the main reason I gave up learning/studying Russian. Like, wtf the point with 7000 other languages out there? I mean, Russian and the Cyrillic alphabet is fucking trivially easy compared to these Indian and Chinese languages Funny - in my one and only semester of Chinese, I didn't actually find the writing exercises in my books too bad. I could begin to see similarities in symbols. Obviously I never got ANYwhere far enough into Chinese to suffer the madness. But, I cannot even begin to fathom the bizarre symbols of Hindi, Dravidian languages. No shame at all in giving everyone on earth a handheld computer language translator.

Yes… I think that grammar rules are good to learn, but for some reason they attack you with them on day one of most traditional classes. I never started learning anything in French until I got interested in vocabulary and pronunciation. Spanish was the same way. Two years of classes and I could say the days of the month, months of the year and count to 100. I also learned how to make one traditional dish. But that was it. Thanks for the video! Always nice to hear how others make it work… and now it’s soooo much easier to find target language content!!

I think learning grammar is best when you get stuck on the ‘why is this like this?’ parts.
