Hi Ilys, first of this is one of my favourite videos ever, I have watched it sooo many times. So thank you for making it! I just wanted to share another tip to learn languages that I think may be useful for people, and that is to focus a lot on translations. I did a lot of Old English classes in my MA degree and I never had a proper "OE language course" - with my supervisor we would just take a piece of text (Beowulf, for example) and we would just translate it together by searching for familiar words (meaning, words that are still recognizable in contemporary English or maybe in German) and then we would implement the translation with an online dictionary. I am applying the same method, alongside some old fashioned grammar notions, to learn Old Norse. Now, I know that these are all dead languages, but I think it could be helpful also for modern languages - I intend to do the same with Norwegian as well, maybe with an easier text (I am thinking Harry Potter maybe?). I hope this may help! 🎀♥️

No, no, no!!!!! You cannot be French and have learned that good English. French and English does not go together at all which history has showed repeatidly. It is like water and oil. They just cant mix. Look at this video which explains the situation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKKtcnyahZJobZI Completely different breeds or species. Completely different animals! Cannot mix!

4:47 Alcohol: This depends on which circles you are in, and on age. Norwegians definitely drink beer and wine for the taste, along with a good meal, without getting drunk.

Curious. You moved to Trondheim ja? Like you speak bokmål. Curious if you have a desire to explore or showcase some of the regional dialekter? I started learning bokmål as well. But one of the most frustrating parts or yeah depressing parts was that there are so many different dialekts. I found a book om hallingmål. It's where my ancestors came from.

Either way. Thank you for the content and hey idk about you ilys, but glad that learning is a life ling process. Def a difficult language. I mean my grandparents were both nordmenn( grew up in Norwegian speaking homes up in nordwest Minnesota) but they forget it and had to be america. So it's nothing new. But to be one of the few in a family of nordmenn who have or can speak some. It's tough

I'm very impressed. You sound 99% norwegian. If I'm gonna be extremely picky, one thing that reveals you is when you say "på egenhånd". 6:34 Norwegians say the "e" longer, more like "på eeegenhånd". So just stretch out the start of that word a bit more and you're good. Again, really impressive.

The method that most naturally applies the advantages of passive language acquisition to deliberate language learning! Methode d’Ilys 1) Find genuine motivation - as a native speaker does 2) Listen, listen, listen - as a pre-linguistic infant does 3) Read while listening (& repeat) - as a toddler, while being read to, does 4) Learn vocab by writing sentences - as a grammar school pupil does 5) Keep a journal - as an thoughtful young adult does 6) Read & re-read books - as a self-motivated learner does 7) Listen to audio books & read along - as a thorough language learner does 8) Watch series & films repeatedly - as a student prepping for uni does 9) Write stories with target vocab - as a Literature major does 10) Learn & recite sentences by heart - as a committed world traveler does 11) Speak to yourself - as an immersive learner does 12) Don’t give up! - as an underachiever does

I once were going to babysit my college friend’s children, so he and his wife could go out one night. He was Icelandic and I am Norwegian. They had 3 children, and they told me that the oldest knew a bit Norwegian, but the two younger ones didn’t speak Norwegian at all. Oh well, I thought, this’ll be fun… 😉☺️ So they left and just a few minutes passed and their middle child, a little girl, started talking her head off. She spoke perfect Norwegian and her parents had no idea. She obviously listened and she did not start talking before she had it all figured out in her head. So when her parent’s came home to 3 sleeping children, I asked them. Area you really not aware that XXX speaks perfect Norwegian? They were shocked. But she was great. Not long after, her little brother also spoke well - so then all 3 children spoke perfectly! Makes me smile thinking back on this, such wonderful children!!! ♥️❤️♥️❤️♥️

It's just a minor thing and not really important, but just for completeness for people that might still struggle with understanding Norwegian: There is a typo at 13:52 in the Norwegian subtitles it says 'men' but I think it should be ' med'
