You can hear the frenetic tempo of these early recordings. The irreverence and playfulness. Modern performances are more formal, though some add improvisations, beats, in the piano movements. But the style of these original recordings are just breathtaking. What a gift to world this music is.

This new era of the weak, overly sensitive people has ruined a lot of jokes and fun. I guess this performance could no longer be staged on Broadway. The world has become poorer.

In answer to some of the comments below about the change in Judy's voice from around 1950 onwards, I truly have to agree. She developed a maturity and a depth to her voice that no one had heard from her before. She was growing up and suddenly her voice took on a new dynamic dimension. It was perhaps a bit of a shock, but by 1950 Judy was no longer the typical MGM girl-next-door. Suddenly she was real !!! Vocally - The Judy of the 1940's could never have delivered, or bettered such an astounding performance or recording of "The Man That Got Away" from 1954 or later. The maturity in Judy's voice may not have been to everyone's taste to begin with but it has stood the test of time. Her live Carnagie Hall concert in 1961 is testiment to that. Judy out-lived her youth but died way too young, however she never gave us anything less than everything when she was able to give it. No matter what age she was, to the majority of the world she was the best and she literally gave us her life in real time. Judy's version of "Over The Rainbow" is truly the most sincere version ever recorded, and was written especially for her. There is absolutely no put down intended here to the many talented people who have recorded this timeless song. Sure, I get that Eva Cassidy, Patti LaBelle, Barbra Striesand, Pink, (and many others)...have lifted this song beautifully. No question. Judy however carried the baggage, and that's why she deserves the number one accolade for her song. From her first recordings as a very young child to her last in London UK at just 47...Her voice, (acting, dancing, comedy, personality, etc) at any age, is still as vital as it ever was! She was and remains to be a timless LEGEND !!

This clip is one of many A+ Judy & Mickey film scenes. I see others here wishing Judy & Mickey had gotten together as a couple in real life. They remained close friends. Judy wanted more but not Mickey. He could NOT have done her a bigger favor. Neither was good at marriage. Mickey could not remain faithful and struggled with gambling and substance addiction. Judy also was an addict and emotionally insecure. Romance/marriage would not have ended well.
