I loved this stereo upgrade. You can even hear Judy's amazing breathe control and that emotional vibrato and the way her voice slides gracefully into each note.

When I die, I’ve made it clear that I don’t want a funeral or memorial. I just want friends and family to listen to this song for the sheer beauty, and maybe think of me…..and maybe think of all the beauty in this world….like Judy.

😍 Gorgeous. The things that she, my favorite ever singer, does to my heart. Just gorgeous.

This movie has got so much going for it. Jerome Kern’s life storey and loads of Hollywood’s super stars of 70 year’s ago. In these days of Conovirus it’s a pleasure to watch. Also I would recommend W C Field in Never Give a Sucker an Even Break.

An object lesson: if you have this much effortless command of your voice, you can put everything into the emotion, knowing your vocal tone won't betray you. But you have to be born with most of this...

This movie was a long one, but it's quite wonderful. From some of the great musical performances t of classic musicals o Jerome Kern's biopic with Robert Walker and Van Heflin. It has it all. Judy didn't play herself, but she sang ( this lovely song. (blonde wig and all). It's time to watch this film again.

MGM had a multichannel optical soundtrack mastering machine, at least one of them, way back in the late 30s. some CDs came out in the late 90s featuring stereo versions of stuff that was mono back in the late 30s/early 40s. i wonder if the original multis still exist somewhere buried deep, of this movie as well? anyways, superlative job with the DES. :)

Nope - lost in the MGM fire. But I have stereo clips on my channel as early as 1934!

A friend asked me this (really am "asking for a friend"!): Which recording was used to create the stereo track? The MGM Records version or the actual film track? He noticed the on-screen sound (naturally) of the dishes and was curious which recording was used.

I initially tried the alternate take that has been released, but Judy's phrasing is so different it would have taken days to synch! (I was planning on re-adding the plates later.) In the end, we worked from the DVD soundtrack.

@@boinx1234 Oh great, thank you! I had wondered if the MGM Records version would fit since it's ever so slightly different. I'll let him know. Again, a great job. This is really wonderful. I remember a late arranger/composer friend of mine about 20 years ago who said (when watching this scene), "Only Judy Garland could get away with humming over such a gorgeous arrangement."
