I would be ashamed to put something like these mods out there for people to download and "experience", like cmon

The slowburn genre redefining spine tingling horror mods you want in comparison have the opposite effect really. You just get bored because NOTHING happens. I played that herobrine mod, from the fog I believe, handicapped myself voluntarily, built weird structures and he only ever showed up twice. Atleast these give you some adrenaline, but then again fighting a skeleton does too so whatever

Since I'm bored, gonna make a horror mod concept that will probably be buried in the comments lmao: If I could mod, I would make a horror mod with maybe the name *"Not Alone"* or something like that. Here's a few concepts I came up with for some of the creatures of the mod: *Stalker:* Kind of like the main "monster" of the mod. I can imagine it being a tall white humanoid with white eyes and no mouth. It would make some small noises while stalking you. It likes to hide behind objects and, well, obviously likes to stalk you lol. When you look at it while it is stalking you, it will make a sort of Warden-like noise (that weird moaning sound it has???) and give you blindness for only about 3-5 seconds. When the blindness effect is gone, the creature is gone as well. The Stalker will not kill you or jumpscare you or anything like that. It's just a goofy goober who likes stalking you lol. *Thief:* This mob would mainly be based around items. If you would drop an item, get far away from it, The Thief will take the item and run away with it. If you use a Spyglass from afar, you can see it look at the item you dropped before picking it up and leaving. Note: Just to make sure it doesn't pick up random dirt blocks or something, it will only pick up the items *you* dropped. I'm not too sure on the design of this thing, but I was thinking of maybe a cloaked humanoid with a distorted face underneath its mask or something? Idk *Wanderer:* Kind of would be similar to the warden and would be blind. It would be decently sized, maybe a but bigger than an Iron Golem. It wouldn't attack you and would only make strange whispering and other "otherworldly" noises. If you attack it, it would burrow underground just like a Warden would do. *Bruiser:* This mob will act hostile towards you, but won't instantly kill you or anything cheesy like that. It would spawn behind you and wouldn't really make too many noises. The only noises it would make are its footstep noises as it gets closer to you. It would do about 2-3 hearts of damage, so it would be a relatively weak hostile mob. It will spawn only at night and only sometimes. Not to the point where it becomes annoying or oversaturated. *Umbra:* A peaceful mob that will only spawn while its raining. It will not do much and will look sort of like a mini ghast with a small smile on its face. It burns in the sunlight snd runs away at night if its not raining. You can shoot it with a bow (if you want you heartless monster-) and it will cry while floating away from you. They will spawn in packs of 3-4 of them. Not really a "scary" mob, just one that adds confusion and mystery to the world of MC. *Optic:* Another harmless mob and one that really only serves to somewhat annoy you while also unsettling you the first time you encounter it. It would be a bloodshot eyestalk that would stare at you. However, it only spawns whenever you place a bed and try to sleep in it. It will spawn near where your bed it and will give you that "Monsters are nearby, cannot sleep now" thing whenever you would try to go to sleep. You would have to look around your area a bit to find it. When you find it, it will stare at you and that's all. It would be planted onto the floor and you can either kill it or move it yourself. I imagine the Optic being able to be carried by the player and moved around. If you choose to kill it...well, then you kill it ig. Nothing happens. However, if you "spare" it and only move it away from your bed, it will be gone the next day and there will be a "prize" where it once was. The prizes are small. Only giving out things like a single gold nugget or a single piece of raw copper. Only *rarely* will it give out something like a single diamond or something. It kind of tests your morality a bit lol. Just to make it unique and not come off as annoying, it will only spawn at nighttime (or when the time is needed to sleep) and will only spawn once every 5-6 days. Last one for now: *Creep:* Doesn't do any damage and only follow you around. However, it will only stay behind you and would run away whenever you look at it. It makes breathing noises as it follows you and makes footstep noises as well. It doesn't attack you if you get close and it would only stare at you. You can use third person mode to see it behind you and how it stalks you. I imagine it looking more like a distorted gray creeper with long limbs and white eyes. It will be somewhat big, maybe around an iron golems size. Thats about it for this mod pack concept thing. I feel like instead of the horror mobs feeling out of place, they should feel and look more natural. I plan for this fanmade mod pack to be used mainly in survival, so it will be a survival friendly mod (with no insta-kill enemies or anything like that) No jumpscares, no overly edgy and scary designs, just you and the monsters in the world of Minecraft... Anyway, lmk what ya'll think about this? I know it ain't perfect, so I'm curious as to whether or not people will like it. Will you put something like this in your Minecraft world??

I think the cave dweller could be way scarier if the AI where applied to the weird procedurally animated spider that Cymaera made.

I'd honestly think it'd be cooler if you almost never got chased by one of these things. They should lean into messing with things subtly and building up. Like, you know, you should be alone but things keep happening. Your items in a chest get rearranged, a door you left closed was opened, maybe random weird structures appear, etc. Would be a lot cooler imo! But I'm not a modder so...lol.

Hear me out… a mod that makes an entity whose whole goal is to be a gamble. You HAVE to come to the entity, it won’t just chase you, it watches you, but it doesn’t actually chase you, you kinda have to go it. Once you approach it, it either heals half (or some other effect), or it could as ALSO SOMTIMES, I dunno, take one of your items? Damage you a little? It’ll never be able to kill you. Just a full on gamble, make it look hideous, maybe like a mauled player. Maybe make it have no discernible features left but a mouth, just something like that.

i think cave dweller reimagined also updates some of the cave dweller's ai and mechanics. like i'm fairly certain cave dweller reimagined allowed the cave dweller to climb up vertical surfaces and crawl through holes (i think gargin updated the original cave dweller sometime later however, so the original cave dweller can also do these things i think, don't quote me on that). the creator of cave dweller reimagined, idk_someguy, also has some other cool horror mods in the works that are completely original and uninspired by the cave dweller. he has an ongoing youtube series demo for his "manbear" mod, which looks very well made and terrifying. i highly recommend checking out his and his developer's work.

Encouraging the player to approach the monster would be a very interesting direction to take. For Valem, it could be neat for the player's first encounter with the monster be friendly. Maybe it heals you. Maybe it restores your hunger. Perhaps during the daytime it can also be encountered but will never interact directly with the player. Regardless, the first encounter should bait the player into a false sense of security. From there onward, any other encounters should get progressively or even instantaneously more hostile. Could have Valem get more misshapen and hostile looking when it gets into its aggressive state, like a boobytrap.

One thing I don't understand is why don't all of these dwellers just do their own thing. Like instead of being hellbent on killing the player, how about making them like what enderman mob was supposed to be? If I were to pitch an idea for this type of mod, it would've been something like this. Firstly, it's design. Most of these mobs are overly detailed which makes them feel alien to Minecraft's essence, so I'd try to make it minimalist, but also weird. Like really weird, maybe with a head that bends around it's body or limbs that separate into parts when the creature is moving. Something that makes you go "what is this thing?". And this thing is gonna have 4 phase/modes. Let's call it Johan. Johan starts in neutral, where it's just doing it's own stuff. In this state it's completely ambivalent towards player, instead you can see it moving around at night, standing in a circle with it's kin (which would have slightly different colours and instead of doing anything Johan does they would just vanish when attacked or after some time) around a spinning pig or cow, building some strange structure using new blocks, etc. In general Johan would do something only it understands, but it would involve messing with the world around. When encountering Johan, if you just get into a certain area of it, Johan gets points towards friendly mood. Approaching Johan now (getting close and having it see you) would instantly put Johan into curious mode. Johan becomes curious let's say after it has 10 points total in friendly or hostile moods and you confronting bypasses this restriction. When curious, Johan will often appear around you. Now, instead of doing it's thing it will just watch you and run away when you notice. Occasionally when you see it doing it's usual routine Johan will suddenly stop and quickly rush towards you, stopping abroad 5-7 blocks away and just staring. The more friendly Johan gets, the closer it starts getting towards the player. Johans starts by just stalking you, but eventually ends up placing blocks around you houses, bringing random mobs, removing blocks and occasionally appearing close to your bed when you try to sleep (Johan will immediately vanish when you stand up). Attacking Johan at any point when it's curious and friendly will make it run away and/or vanish and fill up the hostile bar. The hostile bar also fills up on it's own every night when Johan's friendliness is at max. Initially the only thing it changes is Johan's appearance - giving it a disturbing glee and making Johan even more twisted. When hostile bar is at max, Johan switches towards it's third phase - hunt. Now it will stalk the player during the day and attack during the night. Trying to sleep will immediately spawn Johan and/or kill you. When you die, Johan's hostility decrease, bit it remains hostile until it hits 0, after which it's back to the start into neutral phase. Killing Johan will put it into slumber phase (essentially a cooldown), during which Johan's kin stalks you at night, every time moving closer and closer, until they disappear and leave you at half heart. During this time they can't be killed and function as more of a debuff. Also permanently new twisted variants of normal mobs with Johan face on them will spawn rarely, but often enough for you to notice. I'm not sure about this phase, but I think some kind of closure/aftermath is necessary. So essentially you encounter an interdenominational horror, which takes interest in you, until it decides death is the best way to show love.

Yeah these mods dont even work well as minecraft mods, instant killing is just weird, imagine having full enchanted diamond or netherite and you just, die. Assuming you could even reach that point lol. The block breaking is really weird, definitely just feels like the devs being like "nooo you cant just use an essential minecraft mechanic to escape my cool scary mod!" I think it maybe could be cool if the mod could seperate natural and placed blocks, and maybe ina cave or something the guys could try to break stone to get to you but breaking placed blocks is just awful

This is video is giving me some ideas for my own horror mod based on some of the critiques you gave to these mods. Like *hear me out* (i’ve shorten this twice… help writing is hard T_T) What if there was a dimension that was filled with lived in settlements but no residents, kinda as if you wander into an empty town inhabited only years ago… blocks are moldy or cracked, cakes’ half eaten, scaffolds made permanent. And whenever night (or whatever would count as night in that world since I imagine most of the world would be gray-scaled) a black fog would roll in. (Starting lazy so bad grammar ahead) the black fog is sentient and hides this monster with claws and red eyes, like big wolves basically and they can be deterred by light. But over time they become stronger and learn how to break light sources (very slowly of course so that you still have time to prepare) It’s a mod meant to feel lonely and upsetting in a last survivor kind of way with the black fog (I’ll just call the Smog for now) being overwhelming but avoidable and protectable against. I’m not explaining it very well but when I get some more time I’ll revamp this idea, just wanted to put it out there for now

The Cave Dweller thing is an enigma because it's not essentially stealing because Cave Dweller evolved is under MIT License, meaning people can do whatever they desire with that mod specifically. More over, idk_someguy actually does credit Evolved as a building block in the Reimagined CurseForge page & (iirc) the video he made for it. I feel bad for someguy & Gargin because people have taken both their versions of the Cave Dweller and absolutely molested them in one way or another. They're basically the Trevor Hendersons of the MC Horror mod community.

Watching this video, I feel like it would be more worthwile to create a horror mod that actively encourages the player to engage rather than run away (and consequently get annoyed). Say there's a mod that introduces a demonic entity to your game, something that will initially offer the player boons for making sacrifices or performing certain tasks. You can increase the psychological horror as the player engages more and more, upping the entity's power. Think demonic possession meets that witch lady from stardew valley (whose creepy shrines work in part because you can easily ignore them your entire playthrough)
