The dumpsterfire of a school board in brevard county is not the only reason I decided to completely change my career away from elementary education, but it certainly didn’t help 😕 It honestly just makes me worried for my friends’ children and I’m afraid that if I ever decide to have children, I’ll probably just move out of state

It amuses me that Christians have had a warped persecution complex from the very beginning. The few times I have heard reputable historical accounts of Christians being executed in the Roman Empire the charges weren't "being Christian" but rather "burning down the temples of other faiths".

I hate how this is what people have done with the Fae, as someone who likes to write and hopes to one day have a book published I’d love to write something that involves the fae, I love myths the folklore around Fae, but I’m worried because things like this get popular😭

I live next door in the county that shut down our adult bookstore circa 2001 and the sheriff humble bragged about it (big eye roll), but you just gave me a fun activity to do when we escape to that area.

Wait which county? Polk? Pasco?
@angelVE4 сағат бұрын
@@ReadswithRachel LOL I thought the banning our adult book store would have given it away, but you're right. It's Florida. This could have happened in any county. Polk

Was Grady the sheriff back then too? He’s such a bag of dicks
@angelVEСағат бұрын
@@ReadswithRachel He wasn't. He was a colonel, but that did not stop him from bragging. "We've closed everything from XXX theaters to lingerie shops to peep shows," said sheriff's Col. Grady Judd, who estimates that 120 businesses have been shut down over the years. Like which is it? Do we like small businesses or do we brag about shutting them down so people have to order their naughty books and lingerie from Amazon.

The funniest thing in this terrible book is that the upstanding, righteous christians were the ones running around knocking up teenage girls. Like everything else in the book, it's just another confession

cannot get over how this "bisexual romance" by a queer author with the leads being two sapphic women seems entirely unable to let go of the implication that the only sex that seems to "count" is penetrative sex between a cis man and a cis woman. like genuinely in awe of how poorly this element specifically is handled. I mean I guess every element is poorly handed but this one in particular just has me baffled.

It's really sad to see kids having their ability to read limited to what some arbitrary people think is "appropriate". As a kid in school I was constantly reading and loved to explore books with darker and more challenging themes. I was going through a lot in my life, and it helped me to cope by reading stories about other young people going through those experiences. I didn't have a lot of friends because of moving around so much, so the characters in my books were the best friends I had a lot of the time. I don't know what i would've done if they had taken away all of the books with nuance, but it certainly wouldn't have fostered the love for reading that I have. In a time when we are struggling to get some of these middle grade kids interested in reading, we need more options not less. I stand firmly in the opinion that anyone can find a book they would enjoy reading if they had enough options and the help of someone who is passionate about it. Librarians are underpaid and underappreciated, so passion is usually something they have in spades. Options being limited by people who know nothing about child development and the value of literature is honestly ridiculous.

Leaving a comment in the hopes that someone sees this and realizes what M4L is all about. Remember, the people who scream "think of the children!" while removing anything that can give the children language, knowledge, and experiences that can help them, they're not thinking of the children. Those people want to control their children, ignoring the rights of their own children. It was never about the children. It was about control. It is ALWAYS about control.

This seems so incredibly juvenile! It's like Sweet Valley High, but with magic! And boobs! Booktok doesn't care about good writing, does it? Just pretty covers and a superficially juicy synopsis.
