I knew I would love Connor just off vibes, but when it gets to talking about the wraith and like this podcast is 20 years post filming and he name drops the iratus bug without prompting, he names Todd instantly... He just seems to get sci-fi.

About to re-watch that very episode. This became my favourite Star Trek show (and I saw the original, on TV, during its first broadcasts) and that was one of my favourite episodes.

For everyone wondering about new episodes. They are over at the D-Con chamber youtube channel. Dominic and Connor started fresh and new with a new name and already released 19 interviews. They just released the interview with Nicholas Meyer and their very first episode was with Shatner. If you wonder why they stopped here. Someone on the Shuttlepod team did something that made Connor and Dominic quit. They vaguely talked about it in their new show but google that certain Shuttlepod "crew" member and you'll find out why

The American leftist volunteers in the Spanish Civil War of whom Behr speaks were fighting on behalf of Stalinism. The International Brigades, including the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, were organized and controlled by the Communist International (Comintern) which Stalin ruled. This was often downplayed in propaganda for volunteers, and some volunteers inagined they were fighting for liberal democracy, but ultimately they were not. It's also wrong to call the nationalists, of which there were many factions, "the fascists". Franco was ultimately authoritarian and in many ways oppressive, even tyrannical. But fighting Stalinism is not only for fascists, as Behr must well know from his book recommendation here. I object to the oversimplification of conplex history into a black and white "good guys versus bad guys" narrative. There were definitely lots of good and bad guys on both sides. Rather than lionize Comintern forces, I'd prefer to see the war from a variety of perspectives. If for the sake of drama one side had to be chosen to represent, I think it would be more interesting and instructive to pick a less familiar and less relevant, more exotic and dated ideology like the Carlism of the time, rather than try to make a awkward, perhaps forced political parralel with the present. I loved how DS9 deviated from Gene Roddenberry's consistent ideologal unity and was much richer for it. Unlike on previous Star Trek shows, all characters were generally permitted to disagree and have conflicts and a variety of perspectives. Where the lore's culture of the future human race limited the humanity of the characters, other species like the Bajorans and Ferengi were developed to add the missing human elements. That said, the show still had a consistent ideological vision and might have benefited from a few writers pushing in the opposite direction against the show's ideals. Not for balance, exactly, but at the very least to steel man the ideals against potent criticisms. DS9 was at it's best when it resisted the certainty of "Humans have unified to transform Earth into a benevolent Paradise and the Federation are it's paladins!" I'm sure I'm not the only person often put off by how inhuman and weird Federation humans are shown to be (even if Starfleet culture isn't representative). Bajorans, Ferengi, and other aliens were allowed to behave much more how humans behave outside of fiction. They tended to have deeper and more substantive disagreements amongst themselves. I love DS9 and much of Behr's work, but especially because he resisted the urge to dumb down morally complex situations, which he was often able to pull off while maintaining a clear and consistent moral and ideological point of view. I think his overview of the Spanish Civil War was missing some important context, although I'll be generous enough to his ability as a writer to acknowledge that these are just unprepared comments in a long, freewheeling podcast conversation, not his finished script. Perhaps I'd have little or nothing to criticize about the writing he produced on the subject, clearly after much research and thought. This was a good episode. I'm not a hardcore fan but I found this fun to listen to while I made breakfast. I was especially interested in Behr's stories of the American professional writing culture, both in Hollywood and his early experiences training as a playright in New York. _What We Left Behind_ may be the finest documentary of it's kind and is an essential companion to the series. Thank you to those responsible for this episode.

The trick to not getting wiped out by napping is not going past 20 minutes. Typically we don't go into REM sleep until after 15-20 minutes. If you start REM, you're toast.

Some people forget how terrible times were during the war. I never met my paternal grandfather, but I know he was the mayor of a small village of about 600 people during World War II. He was never a member of the Nazi Party; in fact, the people in the village hid a Jewish family in an attic. When the GESTAPO found out, he was deported to a concentration camp. Due to the advancing American forces, the camp had to be abandoned, sparing him from execution. That’s how he regained his freedom. My Father told me why he has so mutch fear of men in black Coats.

This podcast mentions that the DS9 set had some "drama", which I just don't concern myself with, but it seemed like Jadzia had very few non-Trill-centric episodes before she dated and married Worf, and then the relationship became Jadzia's only screentime. Ezri is heavily involved in about half the episodes of the last season.

Man I can’t believe I’m just seeing this podcast (and the Decon chamber) I’m such a huge fan of enterprise, and I watched it through many times through, same as voyager, and Im always sad it’s gone, I never thought I’d get to see more Conor and Dominick who are some of my favourites- and then to have guests like Robert Duncan McNeil too!? I never thought I’d get to see those three back, together in a room!!

Of course, I love Garak and Robinson has lived an amazing life. So, thanks for that. I watched Enterprise but I didn't think it was that good. The characters were flat. Which is a shame, because Keating is so great here (I also watched the interview w/ Shimerman).

I always loved Adam Pranica's take on Nana during his first or second episode about DS9 on the Greatest Generation pod: he said Nana was acting Kira Nerys as if SHE was the star and the show was about KIRA. And if you watch DS9 with that in mind, you get a different and satisfying POV of the show. (no offence to Sisko et. al)

I just found this. I did not watch the show when it was on. I'm old, I loved TOS. But my husband and I just bought and watched the whole series in 2 weeks. The Enterprise “valentine” to the fans was just so wrong and I'm glad everyone acknowledges that. When Trip died I just cried my eyes out. Love to all of you.

Kira is one of my favorite star trek characters without a doubt, so well acted and i really felt like she got some of the strongest episodes of DS9, and was such an important anchor for the audience to connect with the plight of the bajorans. I also think her relationship with Odo was really important given how few solid romantic arcs the series has had overall

Worf will obviously be the role he's most remembered for, but I also think Michael Dorn deserves a ton of credit for his role of Marcus in Fallout 2, fittingly that game has one of the best star trek related easter eggs (the guardian of forever!)
