Everybody needs to remember there's much, much, more going on here than Vysotsky's punches that are affecting Stevenson. The U.S.S.R. had just reached the zenith of its international power and Cold War prestige under Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev. At the time of BOTH fights, the Soviet Union's aid was the only thing keeping Cuba and Castro alive... by providing military, economic, and political assistance to Cuba. It was the only hope Castro had of staying in power with the country in turmoil due to U.S. embargoes via the Trading with the Enemy Act, in response to Cuba / Castro hosting Soviet nuclear weapons at the height of the cold War with the U.S . These embargo measures froze Cuban assets in the US , consolidated existing restrictions. which crippled the country's economy, leaving Castro's regime in dire, desperate poverty. Castro's people were leaving in exodus, millions of Cubans from diverse social positions within Cuban society were leaving within various, huge emigration waves. If it weren't for Brezhnev's providing Cuba money (because of Castro's pact with Khrushchev to allow Russian a nuclear missile base and support (in turn establishing thousands Soviet ground troups just 90 miles away from the USSR's Cold War enemy.) Competetion in sports (see, cold war Olympics) became a way for the U.S.S.R. to demonstrate their cultural and ideological world superiority outside of politics. Castro publicly hails U.S.S.R. Premier Leonid Brezhnev as Cuba's virtual hero and savior. Castro also had long used Teofilio Stevenson at his side as his puppet to unify the people in collective pride for Cuba. No athlete had ever been at the whim and service of a country's leader/dictator and no county's leader had been at the mercy of another like Castro was to Breznev.. Stevenson was seen often with Castro's as his "face of Cuba" representing "Cuban Pride". So at the time of these fights, Brezhnev virtually owned Cuba and Castro... ..so do you think Fidel Castro would even take the chance to allow Teofilio to possibly destroy Leonid Breznev's champion of Soviet supremacy to the world. That would be political and literal suicide, right??? Cuba was a mere pawn in USSR's Cold War agenda against the US and Stevenson was a blindly loyal pawn to his Dictator/Leader's cause of the Cuban Revolution. And in 1973, Breznev's past support was giving Castro a chance to reach a final political solidification of the Cuban revolutionaries' new government ...which enabled Castro's 50 year reign. At this very moment the Soviet Union was at their peak of gaining Cold War world military dominance as well as having a national sports program focused on the representation of social dominance through athletic dominance in sports. With this in mind, watch these fights again... .. and imagine what Cuba's national fate could have been if Stevenson would have humiliated the Soviet Union by destroying their champion....just as he had the dozens before.... And do you think Fidel Castro would have not spoken very seriously with his loyal poster boy about what is at stake before these fights?? And regardless of what might really be happening in this video, I've not heard many who didn't agree that Teofilio Stevenson was, in fact, the greatest Olympic boxer to have lived.

No se porque tanto revuelo con esto de que un boxeador pierda. Casi ningun boxeador termina invicto. Los expertos dicen que "si no has perdido con nadie, es porque no has boxeado con nadie". Esas derrotas solo significan que tuvo rivales duros y altibajos como todos. Incluso Marciano y Mayweather terminan invictos pero no pelearon lo suficiente vs buenos rivales. Mayweather rehusó de PacMan, solo una vez, ya casi a punto del retiro y la pelea fue muy mala. Marciano nunca enfrentó dos rivales de mas de 250 lbs. Ali perdió varias veces, incluso lo tumbaron varias veces, antes del retiro por no ir a Vietnam y despues, aunque si casi siempre se paró. Stevenson con Igor no pudo desquitarse pero a Milian lo fulminó en el Cardin de 1978.
