Tyrell Biggs was lucky the Soviet Bloc boycotted the '84 games. He was also lucky to win a bogus decision over Tyson in the Olympic trials. Of course, the Soviet wrestlers were lucky to have avoided a particularly strong group of American freestyle wrestlers that year too. Maybe that's why they didn't show up since wrestling was supposed to be their sport (JK). I don't understand all the political comments. Who cares about Cuba's politics? This was a sporting event. I understand that Stevenson was very proud to be Cuban, but that doesn't make him Fidel Castro. It's hard to say. While Stevenson looked great in international competition, he lost to other Cuban heavyweights at home in national competitions. His final record was 301 wins and 20 losses. So while he was a world class performer when there was a medal at stake, he wasn't exactly unbeatable. I doubt that he'd have been able to endure the demands of professional world class heavyweight competition. He would have had a few wins, but over time his tendency to lose against less than stellar opponents would have caught up with him.

@dsimon338716 жыл бұрын
Jorge You are absolutely correct. Lets also use logical thinking: Ok...so the amateur style is so different, and Cuban fighters all are steeped in this style. So How do Cuban fighters do when they turn professional? pretty damn well! Cuban fighters have no problems making the transition. Second: In an amateur bout a fighter must go from 0 to 60 in a round, more punches are thrown, better form is expected...both styles are a way of training. There is no reason to think Stevenson could not have trained different for a different setting. The fact is this guy, like Ali, had the speed of a middleweight, and power that would have been devistating. All the pros at the time said he would have been a handful and they were not just being nice. It is illogical to assume that Stevenson would not have been one of the best, watch the film it does not lie.
@lifesgood72356 жыл бұрын

@@lifesgood7235 Yeah and you know that right? Your the type of bloke Jorge above was talking about. Heres a general principle that applies to all combat training: You fight the way you train. @supershadichedgehog ok let me drop some knowledge on you. cubans ARE NOT allowed to turn pro unless they escape cuba. something teo was not willing to do as he loved his cuba. and if you dont know you can only fight amatuer til you 34yrs old. teo would of been 36 in 87.
