Hi just found your review from a danielsson forum , I’m looking a new 4wt reel for March. My heads all over the place with brands like lamson liquid, redington zero, orvis battenkill and hardy marquis. I’m a dry fly angler and been reading abit about this reel. I’m based in Northern Ireland, looks to be pretty hard to find this reel online apart from there wedsite in Sweden. I think it’s coming in at over £200 now for delivery etc. how’s the reel faired up 3 years later? Are u still using it

Hi mate. Apologies for the late reply. I’ve just seen this. This reel was a great wee workhorse for me. I used it for a good 2 years. I’ve since moved it on and bought the Danielsson FW2-6. I just wanted something with a drag system. I keep meaning to post a review of that reel. They are only available direct from the factory in Sweden. Hope this helps and good luck with the search. I don’t recommend this, I tried and hooked into 3 fish and not one of them broke the loom band and lost them shortly after. After that I tried actually snapping them myself and the pressure to barely snap them was waaay too much, maybe it’s just the brand of loom bands I used but just went back to 3lb fluruocarbon. Just my opinion but being honest!🎣

without a hackle this fly will not float and sink like a rock !
@paulgarrigan2472 Жыл бұрын
Hi Kenneth. There are loads of flies that at designed to float without a hackle. Eg. Shipmans, DHE etc. they are all designed to sit lower in the surface film than a hackled pattern. At times this can definitely turn refusals into solid hook ups. The material used in this particular pattern and the hook choice ensure it floats. Give it a go. Thanks very much for watching the video and tight lines 😎👍

Hi Keith. No the reel it’s free spinning like a centrepin so it doesn’t over run. There are loads of click and pawl trout reels on the market with no drag. There is a school of thought with h says there really isn’t much need for a drag system for UK river trout fishing. I’m glad you like your reel and I hope you hear it sing plenty! Hi, I'm from Sweden, and I've been using these reels since the 80s, first in the Loop versions, a tip is to loosen the tension when you're not using the reel so that the rubber on the bearings doesn't form pressing spots, if you get gravel and debris between the spool and the bearings when you fish, just dip the reel in the water and it is fit for fight again.

@paulgarrigan24722 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply Jonathon and thanks very much for watching the video. I tie lots of successful patterns with CDC. It’s a wonderful material. However, for the DHE I find deer hair looks better, floats longer and requires much less maintenance. That’s the beauty of tying tho. We can all customise our patterns to our own needs. You should definitely check out Bob Wyatts books. 😎 Tight lines Paul
@carlhughes95842 жыл бұрын
@@paulgarrigan2472 I've already read his books! I completely disagree with his and your views that CDC is high maintenance. Use good and enough CDC, treat with CORRECT floatant and it's as good as deer hair and easier to tie with. And how you think deer hair looks better than CDC as a wing?? I suggest you actually go and look at a real insects wing. Soft and transparent grey just like CDC.....deer hair looks like a bunch of sticks!

Interesting concept, but wouldn’t you be better off placing the hook on the rear of the lure? Lot less faffing and usually it’s the rear of the lure they go for. Thanks
@paulgarrigan24722 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching David. Hook up rates are much better with the hook positioned in the middle. I have discussed this with various ghillies and better salmon anglers than me. Most agree that Salmon in particular will take the lure side on. If you had one hook in the tail you would miss most of these takes. This, in my humble opinion, applies to Pike too but we are allowed two hooks on a pike lure in Most Scottish Lochs. Tight lines Paul

Thank you for you insights and knowledge in regards to this remarkable reel. I finally bought a Danielsson. Mine is a Loop Model 2 no. 4461. I bought it for a good used price. Like yourself, I always wanted one but at the time I couldn't afford it. As you said, it is vital not to expose the reel to silt/sand/mud. I learned this the hard way and partially bent my spool due to the roller bearings locking up onto it when trying to remove it. I hand straightened the spool out but it took some time and patience to fix it. Regardless, I'm happy to own one and plan to fish it hard.

I like quality in a reel. No need for a train stopping drag below 7 wt and fishing for trout. Give me quality and good design. I love the fact they still produce these reels today. I also like that danielsson is producing these and not outsourcing to any other country and simply applying their name. With such a long production run they certainly nailed it the first time out!!!

I find it astounding that this excellent fly isn't more well known and used. I first tied it 20 odd years ago after seeing it in one of Bob Wyatt's articles in FF&FT magazine. Hello. The zonker piece you put in the magic tool, is it cross cut or regular ?
@paulgarrigan24723 жыл бұрын
Hi Branko. I have always used the regular or straight cut zonker. I think that gives you a better action as the direction of the hair is straight off the hook. I just use the same piece for the body in the magic tool and I am happy with the action it creates. Plenty of movement. I have never really had any reason to change it to the cross cut. Hope that helps. This fly is well worth tying without the bead as well. It changes the action again and is another option to try on an intermediate or sinking line. Hope this helps. I agree that a full drag isn't needed for most (if not all) UK trout fishing, although I still use a dragged reel for #5-#7 lines when fishing large stocked rainbows. For wild brownies and lighter river use I, like you, enjoy a simple dragless reel. My favourite over the last few years has been the Sage Click, which has a super-large arbour, is beautifully made, surprisingly robust, and weighs only 88g in its largest (#4-#6) size, an important consideration if I'm carrying into the hills for a few days wildcamping/fishing. That triple-roller arrangement on yours is fascinating!

Thanks John. Very much appreciated. I have used mustad 6mm split rings for years and have never had an issue. I was recently given some VMC extra strong split rings to try. I think the size 2 are 6mm but worth double checking. These are excellent too. I would definitely recommend using a well known manufacturer for end gear. Especially for salmon. After all we wait so long for a fish it would be sickening to loose one on poor kit. Tight lines Paul
