How can we get rid of an old crape myrtle that's too close to the corner of the house? We tried digging it up, but it appeared to have a very deep root system and keep coming back every year.
@GardenTheoryКүн бұрын
@@BrichaJulbry that's a great questions. I'll have to do a bit of research on crape myrtles but I'll get back to you by the end of today.
@GardenTheoryКүн бұрын
So, I've done a little research. From what I see there are two main options. One you can rent some kind of back hoe or tractor to pull the root ball out. That or doing it by hand with a good shovel and something like an post hole digging bar to leverage that rootball out. If it's pretty mature like what you're describing it might be good to look into rental options or have a reputable landscaper come do the service and get quotes on that. Hope that helps!!

This is exactly what I would like to do with my years, turning it into more of a Japanese garden. The big problem is I don't yet have enough shade and the layout of the house and the garden is awkward. So, it's very challanging choosing plants. The ones I would like and would fit the theme like some shade and currently I have almost none. So, thank you for this video, it's another info I can use.

@@PatriciaHunt-r9z I personally would wait til late winter-early Spring (right as things start to bud out) before any major pruning. You might lose out on some flowers for that year. I'm not as familiar on rhododendrons.

I've enjoyed all of them so far, there have been learning nuggets in almost all of them. I'm definitely learning and getting ideas! Gardening is SO broad! I do have lots of questions. But I'll start with one that is truly driving me crazy. Do you have any ideas on how to control sweet pea weeds? Spraying doesn't seem to affect them. Fortunately, they're pretty easy to pull, but it's hard to get the root out, which is probably why they are hard to eradicate. The other weed I'm struggling with is Viola (wild violet weed). Technically a flower I suppose, but it's terrible. It grows in the grass a well and really smothers everything. Maybe I should just plant an entire lawn of viola! hah
@GardenTheory3 ай бұрын
I think handpulling is your best option with the sweet pea weeds, doing your best to get as much as you can out, then weekly weeding. If it's an annual weeds, being on top of it even if it keeps regrowing so it doesn't reseed will help to reduce it next year. There are some tools that can work for getting rotos out. With Viola, it seems like you can try using 2-4D/broadleaf herbicide in the fall that can kill it in the lawn. You may want to try reaching out to a landscaping company for a quote, or what they recommend in your area.
@SueatEyeQDesign2 ай бұрын
@@GardenTheory thx! I was hoping there was a no weeding answer LOL. But yes, staying on top of it is the best course. At least they are easy to pull.

Where were you when I was starting my landscaping? I planted a decorative plum tree out front of my house and it is so big now and starting to impede the front view of my house, not to mention all the annoying little plums that are falling now. Other than that, it's a beautiful tree! Then again, I didn't really have another place to put it farther out, but I could have planted a tree that wouldn't grow so big.

Something I would like you to address is how to bring four season interest and color into the landscape. I know some of this can be accomplished with bulbs in the spring and mums in the fall but please teach us more. What do you look for when making your decision, and what is your thought process when deciding where to place each plant or decorative item so they don’t look as if they had just been “plunked” there? How would you create privacy from a neighbor’s second story window? Our electrical and water lines go through the west side of our property, the neighbor is also to the west. I am slowly working my way through your videos. Sound quality is much better. 👍🏼 Keep up the good work!

Very informative video. First time viewer here. I’m so glad your channel popped up as a suggestion to watch. We moved into a new home with nothing but grass in the backyard. Two years ago I planted two peach trees at the far end of the yard, and a Chinese Pistache, to shade the patio … in the middle of the yard. Oh how I wish I had found your channel first. That's a great question! It would depend on your own preferences and the site conditions. I can't give you a perfect solution without visiting your site. However, I have done a few videos doing a step by step guide on how to plan your landscape that you can watch to help you through that process.

Great info! I enjoyed watching this video! We planted some trees 2 years ago and we initially had mulch rings around them, but grass has started to overtake the mulch rings and now it’s just grass under the trees. Would you recommend doing anything about it? Should we rip out the grass and put more mulch around the trees?
@GardenTheory4 ай бұрын
Take you for your comment! That's a very common problem for the grass to creep in over time in any beds next to the lawn. Probably the best way would be to try to remove the grass by hand since you do want to be a little careful for the tree's top layer of roots. If you leave the grass there you'll want to be very careful not to girdle your tree by string trimmers especially if they are young trees. You can get protection sleeves for young trees. If you use 4" edging around your lawn areas it will help to retain it. I personally recommend steel or concrete for best quality and long term use, but there are cheaper and DIY alternatives that may not last as long. You will still have to check for weeds and grass sneaking through occasionally, but it does help a lot. I hoped my answer helped, let me know if you have any other questions! :)
