The animators must have had either a great time doing this, or it was drudgery. It sure added a lot to the film's atmosphere and feeling of advanced tech.

“Good afternoon gentlemen. I am a Hal 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. Lab in Urbana Illinois on the 12th of January, 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you’d like to hear it, I can sign to you. It’s called “Daisy.” Daisy, Daisy give me your answer due. I’m half crazy all for the love of you. It won’t be a fancy marriage, I can’t afford a carriage. But you’ll look sweet upon a seat of a bicycle built for two.”

As some of you may know, someone from the production staff visited the MIT Media lab to see the current state of computer graphics display. Realizing that the current state of the art was in its infancy and would quickly look dated, the filmmakers decided to use animation instead. What you're seeing, for each of those information screens, is a 35mm film rear protected onto a screen. Their intuition was correct: if you watch the ( not very good ) sequel, the graphics are all 8 bit low rez raster displays which looked horribly dated almost immediately, and today look like a bad joke ( which makes sense, the film was supposed to be 2010 but was made in 1984. I was working on computer graphics systems in 1984, and what you see on screen wasn't even state of the art then... They appeared to have simply used some crappy pc for the graphics ). Kubrick was an amazing filmmaker with insane attention to detail. If you haven't read Clark's "Lost Worlds of 2001" ( en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lost_Worlds_of_2001 ) I highly recommend it...

One thing that looks quaint by today's standards is that the Hal 9000 user interface included eight screens, four to the left of the camera and four to the right. Kubrick had gotten consultant help from IBM as to what a user interface might look like in the future, and that's what they had come up with. But only maybe 5 years later, Xerox PARC and Stanford University pioneered user interfaces with multiple overlapping windows, and by the real year 2001, that had become the industry standard.

I'm running this full-screen on my mobile to weird people out. As I was saying elsewhere, I'm sure Kubrick took a look at Rosenblatt's 1958 paper "The Perceptron: A Probabilistic Model for Information Storage and Organization in the Brain" and told the designer to generate graphs exactly like found therein. 👌

Another one with good graphs: "Gradient Theory of Optimal Flight Paths" by Henry J. Kelley (Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp, 1960) 😂 interestingly also mentioned as an early example of the "backpropagation" method used in training feedforward neural networks (which is optimization by another name)

Wonderful! I'm sure the audio from the movie (computer sounds and spaceship engine humming) could be captured and added to this. It would make for 10 hours of great white noise.
