Oh Bleak House is real cool, it is a good one to reread through the years, as you gradually age ... My nephew gave me " the complete cosmicomics" by Calvino, so I've read some of the stories from that, his is an inventive, complex mind. Reminded me of Borges, a little, but Borges more mathematical...Have loved your videos, keep up the good work, Merry Christmas dear Caitlin! .......AL

How engaging, your take on these books! I will certainly watch you more as the time goes by. Do you know, I thought after reading " the diary of a madman "( I have this edition in hardback) anyway, I thought, this must be where Steve Martin got his stuff" ! Get a copy of his "cruel shoes" and you'll see how he could have been really affected, and developed his form of humor from Gogol, the master... well, take good care of yourself, and thanks for such a great review, AL

I am so glad your December TBR video enabled me to discover your channel. My first read of the year was Susanna Clarke's The Wood at Midwinter and I am currently reading Wuthering Heights. Other books on my January TBR are Eugene Onegin, Beautiful World Where Are You, Lady Macbeth, Martyr! and Say Nothing. I am also currently working my way through Anna Akhmatova's poetry and Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales.

I was also hoping to start A Castle in the Clouds on Christmas Eve/Christmas but my package from my Nana is delayed and now won’t be here until after the New Year. I still plan to dive right into it though to start off 2025 on a sweet and fun note with Sophie, before I dive into The Idiot by Dostoyevsky. It seems we very much have similar reading tastes and I’m so thankful to have come across your channel. 💜 you’re lovely and emanate such sincerity.

I think with 100 years you'll have to understand that gabriel knows that these behaviours aren't normal, he know's about how gross it is that two brothers chose to have sex with the same old woman and everything else that happens in the story. because it's more about the theme of solitude and of war and what it does to generations and families I absolutley adore 100 years, I think it's a brilliant tale and a book you can't really understand and digest the first time you uread it and you'll have to read analysis of it to see things you haven't realized. it's truly a masterpiece

Hi Caitlin! First time here🙂 I love how you improvise with the little space you have in your living arrangements. Actually kind of creative ☑ The way you just casually dismissed Ada Limon's "Bright Dead Things" is so funny, considering that she's the current U.S. Poet Laureate. I can tell you have a preference for the classics. Ovid, Shakespeare.☺

Scifi favorites: - Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers (russian authors never fail) is my absolute favorite. This story describes the aftermath of humanity's first contact with aliens, who have visited earth in an apparent trivial pitstop, leaving behind mysterious "zones" which humanity as you can imagine is keen to dissect, however sinister the consequences are. It is deeply philosophical and fascinating, and inspired the famous movie Stalker by Tarkovsky as well as the video game STALKER. - The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series by Douglas Adams is another favorite. It balances sci fi with comedy and philosophy and is truly a page turner. When reading it I was often reminded of Gogol's writing and humor honorable mention -- "Space Prison" by Tom Godwin. This story follows several generations of people in their fight to survive the dangerous environment of a planet which an alien race left them to die at. To me this is closer to a true sci-fi than the other two I mentioned, in that it could easily be the plot of a star trek episode. Very entertaining

SF recommendations: Dune - Frank Herbert Three-Body Problem - Liu Cixin A Canticle for Leibowitz - Walter M. Miller Jr. 1984 - George Orwell Brave New World - Aldous Huxley I think all print editions of Solaris in English are a retranslation of the French translation so it's not the best. I highly recommend watching Tarkovsky's film adaptation of the novel which adds a religious element on top of Lem's hard science fiction. I've watched it like 15 times and always discover new layers.

I spy with my little eye the Vintage UK version of War and Peace! I read the Anthony Briggs' translation last year of War and Peace. I also concurrently had the Louise and Aylmer Maude translation for cross-checking a specific sentence. I recommend the Briggs' translation wholeheartedly, also because he translated the French into English as well, making for an easier reading experience -- unless, of course, you already speak French!

note: cossacks are cossacks. its was a culture. not an ethnicity. they were organised military focused societies called hosts. most of them existed in russian empire and most of their descendants, in or out of remnant and revived hosts, live in russian federation, only one of many cossak hosts were based in what is/was post 1991 ukraine territory.

OMG The Count of Monte Cristo has to be one of my top three most favorite books I've ever read! And I found it really really fast-paced, too! I actually did a little research and found out that it's because Dumas had to publish it in parts, so every chapter finished off on a cliffhanger to keep the readers excited for the next part!! On another note, I'm studying classics, so maybe I should definitely read Ovid... 😂🙈

If you are mesmerized by time you could go to "a" source of Sartre's itellectual inspiratioins--Martain Heidegger--for a vocabulary and a thinking that could enable you to better articulate some of your thoughts about time. Sartre, though a philosopher, is most powerful and beautiful as a literarian. I recall an undergraduate philosophy professor saying, as he held "Being and Time" in one hand, and "Being and Nothingness" in the other--my mind is with Heidegger, but my heart is with Sartre.

Brilliant, I was beginning to feel as though no one in the KZbin book reviewing community had heard of this amazing book,as it is my favourite book. I was introduced to it by a very good friend who was a 2nd year Philosophy major at Otago University in Dunedin New Zealand. I have lost count how many times I’ve read it. My current copy has been annotated on just about every page, with marginalia on specific scenes, or connections to Postmodern theory, existentialist themes/alienation,absurdity,superficiality and responsibility for one’s own actions. Every time I read it again, from the get go I slip into Roquentins shoes and start questioning my own existence as he works through his experiences throughout the book he’s such a good writer;as good a writer as he is a Philosopher. I did a Visual Arts degree, and I find his experiences in the book so real because I can see them. I pasted a coloured copy of Salvador Dalis painting,”The persistence of memory”/ the one with the melting clocks, with an accompanying note on the first page, alluding to pg.36…” But time is too large it refuses itself to be filled up everything you plunge into it goes soft and slack”. and pg.63you might as well try to catch time by the tail. I could go on discussing the book with you for the whole book. So Thankyou for your annotation of NAUSEA you really made my day❤ Paul down under in Adelaide South Australia
