@ I just love that after all these years your passion shines through and you do it whether 10000s (but my lord there is no such force) or 100s watch. As is tradition the holidays are too stressful, but I have two family birthdays coming up in January and I will make these at least once as a gift! I got into self made gifts over the last few years, be it pestos, vegetable chips, jams, wines or baked goods.

It usually takes years, I swear lol. They even happen after I bottle wine or cider, so I assume it’s oar for the course, unless I am consistently doing something terribly wrong!

I grew saffron bulbs for a few years, but something seemed to have eaten the bulbs. But it feels really badass to show up to someone's house bearing a wad of saffron threads. I think it's worth more than gold, and the bulbs are like $2/apiece.

You guys made my day. 😊 Do you think the frozen quince was easier to process because freezing broke up the cells? Your jars of jelly and paste look amazing!
@HappyHobbit19 күн бұрын
That’s what I was wondering, too! That and the lack of peel are the only variables, but I think your theory makes the most sense!

Freezing or cooking them in a pressure pot makes it easier - or just going to the fruit mill to get juice. This is what I do.

It's so interesting that the jelly turns red even though the fruit is green/white! I've heard of quince online but I don't remember ever seeing them sold here in Virginia.
@HappyHobbit19 күн бұрын
Isn’t it fascinating? I will have to look deeper into why it turns red like that. I have seen them for sale here (Nor Cal) in the autumn at the farmers market and in a local grocery store, but as far as I know, they aren’t widely commercially grown, which is probably why they’re more rare to encounter.

Tried one raw once. Hard as chewing wood (I suspect that Balsa Wood would be more tender), tasted like aspirin. I had to keep the fresh slices under water to keep them from turning brown.

Have you tried lighting a candle when you chop onions?
