What an adventure! I’m curious as to how got your canoes back. Did you ship them by sea?
@vtal1Ай бұрын
Hi Kevin, Yes, we left the canoes in Tasiujaq to be picked up by freighter and brought to Montreal. We've done this a number of times from Kangiqsualujjuaq and Kuujjuaq. The canoes usually arrive in Montreal .around Thanksgiving.

I just heard from Dick Irwin, who did the filming. I ws wrong about it being VHS. It is a Sony Model No. CCD-TR101. The tapes are video Hi8 not VHS.

All these vintage videos need to be viewed by more people, today’s paddlers would benefit from these trips prior to a time when people made KZbin videos of the same canoe trips. It sure would’ve been nice to have some drones filming along the way, but they didn’t have them back in those days.These paddlers built up some seriously great memories.❤

There were 5 of us. 2 tandem canoes and one solo canoe. Dick, who did almost all the filming, had the solo boat. Sometimes one of us used his camera to film Dick.

In the modern you-tube era, I've seen a bunch of trips in which certain aspects of the trip were designed specifically for youtube purposes. That hasn't to my knowledge yet included deliberately choosing a kevlar boat, let alone a 30 lb ultra-light. I have a 30 lb solo canoe myself, and it's not going to survive one single hit in rapids like that. I can see how the soloist could have paddled out in one of the tandems if the canoe was damaged late in the trip, but there's too much gear to do that in the early stretch along the dePas.

Great stuff. There always seems to be some magic to pre-internet trip reports or videos. Trips like this in 2024 are still impressive, but 30 years ago was a whole different ball game.

Yes, when I first heard about it, in the late 70's, the person called it Fort Chimo. Wikipedia says the name changed in 1980 to Kuujjuaq, which is the inuit name for the Koksoak River.

Hi Darrell, We've been down the De Pas and parts of the George several times. We usually start in early to mid July, so your timing sounds good. If you end your trip on the George after the 3rd week of August or so, you're more likely to run into bad weather Take care, Al.

We are figuring out cost of shipping back( and expense of going to Montreal from Halifax to pick them up) vs taking them back to Schefferville with us. Might be picking your brain for more info as we get along with our planning.

@@darrellcooling7670 Good luck with figuring things out. One year - when we traveled from Kuujjuarapik on the Hudson Bay coast to Kuujjuaq - one of our group stayed in Kuujjuaq for a few days and managed to find a flight "deadheading" back to Montreal for a reasonable price. You probably can't count on it though. I'll be curious to learn what you learn in terms of logistics. Feel free to ask more questions. You can email me directly if you like.
